As good as the first book
Revisado: 04-29-25
Wasn't a fan of the plot point around him losing touch with if he was inside a game or not, but other than that I enjoyed this book as much as the prior book.

Historia
The world teeters on the brink of destruction. The people who should be saving the Earth ignore Jason Asano's warnings and choose to loot the house as it burns down around them. He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

Definitely enjoyed the book and like the world building and the new direction this story is going in, but would have liked to have seen a more climactic ending.

Join Rooker Flynn on an adventure inside the legendary labor camp that's nastier than your worst nightmares, where he discovers there's more to life than survival, and the worst prisons are the ones we build ourselves. A story of betrayal, perseverance, abandonment, and revenge, The Trial of Rooker Flynn is more than an ordeal, it's a reckoning.

4.5 Stars
Revisado: 04-24-25
A.R Witham has been taking me on quite the emotional journey through Keymark. You start off with Legend of Black Jack where no matter how grim the situation seems, there's a sense of hope and a feeling that things are going to work out. Then you go to the Crimes of Rooker Flynn, where there's a sense of helplessness. You just know that whatever they try, is bound to fail and you're just waiting to see what's going to go wrong.
Now, the Trial of Rooker Flynn starts off with the characters at rock bottom - beaten, battered, and broken. They say time heals all wounds, but even in a world of magic, some knives cut too deep to fully heal and some scars can't be seen on the surface. The only bright side is that things can't get any worse and the only place they have to go is up. Unfortunately, the further up they climb, the greater the risk of falling. Can they overcome past failings and left over wounds or will the trauma from yesterday keep them from experiencing the joys of tomorrow?

Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Not my favorite, but still loved it
Revisado: 04-24-25
I loved this book, but admittedly it's possibly my least favorite in the series. It seemed a bit bloated at times, a lot of action happened off screen, and there weren't as many small intimate intense fights as there were earlier in the series. Carl is often acting more as a general than as a soldier on the front lines, and when he is on the front lines it's just one front out of 5 or so major battles happening at the same time.
With all that said, there are still plenty of hilarious moments, plenty of action, great character moments and lots of twists and turns. I love this series, I love this book, and I will be rereading it very soon.

I'd probably give 3.5 stars if I could.
Revisado: 04-24-25
This is a hard one for me to give a solid rating to because I loved the idea of the book but had a hard time getting into the story. For some reason a part at the beginning that should have been very entertaining just wasn't keeping my attention. I was drifting off so often that I decided to pause where I was at and read a completely different book. I was hesitant about coming back to this book, but I'm glad I did. The longer I read, the more I enjoyed the story and now definitely plan on continuing the series.

This is getting better!
Revisado: 04-24-25
I felt the plot was better during book 1, but book 2 was a big improvement in writing, pacing, world building and character. If the author continues to improve, then I'll have a lot of 5 star reviews coming up as I continue the series.

Historia
Corin Cadence has been summoned to meet with the Emerald Council, a political summit including the most powerful of all attuned and their closest political allies. His summons came with a dire warning—that war was coming to the nation of Valia. While Valia is no stranger to warfare, the circumstances of this invasion are dire. Valia's visage, Tenjin, remains missing. Many of the nation's leaders were slain during Mizuchi's attack, and others killed or injured through Saffron's machinations. With a critical power vacuum in Valia's leadership, few can be trusted.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-24-25
I've really enjoyed the series up to this point, but this book was a huge struggle for me. I felt like the first half of it was all magical theory and it truly felt like sitting in a computer programing lecture. Except instead of talking about accomplishing things with magic, it was mostly explaining why different approaches were a bad idea. Then the next 40% of the book was politicking, which Corin is supposed to be bad at, except for when he's brilliant at it. You finally get some action in the last 10% of the book, but at that point it was too little too late.
It also kind of bugged me that early in the book, he makes a comment that it's not a big deal for someone to show him her attunement on her chest because he's known as the guy that has zero sexual interest. And yet, he kind of has a thing going with at least 4 different characters and later on blushes when he realizes a girl he's visiting in the hospital must only be wearing a hospital gown underneath the blanket. That doesn't sound at all like a guy that has zero sexual or romantic interest.
