Historia
In the heart of Adenashire, where elfish enchantments and dwarven delights rule, Arleta Starstone, a human confectionist works twice as hard perfecting her unique blend of baking and apothecary herbs. So when an orc neighbor secretly enters her creations into the prestigious Elven Baking Battle, Arleta faces a dilemma. Being magicless, her participation in the competition could draw more scowls than smiles. And if Arleta wants to prove her talent and establish her culinary reputation, this human will need more than just her pastry craft to sweeten the odds.

Cannot finish
Revisado: 10-30-24
I really tried to like this book but the main protagonist whines constantly and despite claiming she is not a damsel in distress, plays that stereotype to the nines. The discrimination against humans is also very heavy-handed and is rehashed twice per chapter in case you forgot. I had to stop at chapter 4.
From the other reviews I am sure the baking bits are awesome and this is the kind of light reading some people are looking for but it's just not for me.

About the narrator....
- De Helen en 07-03-19
Fascinating premise but very YA
Revisado: 11-02-22
It is rare to find a truly original concept among the thousands of sci-fi media these days but this book definitely hit the mark. The story is fascinating and has a lot of potential but the execution is too YA for me. Most of the characters are very juvenile and have the emotional depth, thought process and understanding of the world and politics of teenagers. Which is fine for the actual teenaged characters, not so much for the adults. The villains are incredibly one-dimentional which is a real let down from someone like Stan Lee. The dialogue is also just awful in some places - so much so that at times I have actually wondered if this was even beta-read, let alone edited.
All in all, I don't exactly regret reading it but I think this would have made a much better comic than a book. I will not buy sequels.

Wow, this did not age well
Revisado: 02-08-22
I wish the vampire story was entertaining enough to drown out the constant whining of the main character about how horny he was, I wish the main plot twist was written well enough to make up for the blatant sexism. I wish the monotone narrator had turned me off at the beginning and I had not wasted so much time hoping it will get better.
It was written in the fifties and it shows. I did not finish even the main story and am going to return it.

Do not like zombies, like this book
Revisado: 01-10-22
I really like the short interview format of this book. Every time I watch or read something zombie related, it always focuses on the fate of a single person or a small group and that bores me very quickly. This never got too much or too gorey.

I am seriously surprised at how wonderful this lore is. I normally do not read YA, but I will give this one a chance. The story just keeps getting better even though it gets a little long-winded sometimes.

Interesting. Might read more, not sure yet. It isn't groundbreaking but the lore is well developed and the characters are good. Did not enjoy the macho-military beginning but that is a matter of taste, I guess.

How is this so old yet so new?
Revisado: 01-10-22
I would not have guessed this book is as old as it is just by reading it. It is truly terrifying how you can read it today and see the same warning signs, the same patterns, the same issues. I would absolutely recommend listening even though it definitely made me uncomfortable and anxious at times.

Revisado: 01-10-22
The lore, the characters, the story are so great that I will keep reading this series until the bitter end but Gods it goes on forever. 3/4 of the book could be edited out without anyone noticing. The drama is strong with this one.
Still will keep reading.

Nice and easy read
Revisado: 01-10-22
I really enjoyed this book as a bit of light reading. The story isn't overly complicated, it is fairly easy to predict and the characters are interesting. As a citizen of Prague, I really appreciate the setting and the very accurate descriptions of the city. It is rare to read something that isn't set in London or the US so this was a big draw for me. I wish the narrator had more time to practice some of the Czech words, though. Some of them came out fine but some were butchered and I think that could have been easily avoided. I know there are time and budget constraints, but would it have been so much more work to find a consultant who speaks the language?
