Fast Paced but All Over the Place
Revisado: 03-26-24
I definitely flew through this installment but felt like the world building and conflict really suffered. It was just being thrown around from one conflict and resolution to the next. Secondary characters, once again, came in and carried the story while Bryce and Hunt were a snooze.

Historia
Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that’s been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns the most: her globetrotting parents—who frequently leave her behind.

*SCREAMING* I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT MEOW. THAT ENDING!!!!!!!!!
Once again. Isabel has crafted a swooningly romantic story full of fierce female leads who love their food and pretty dresses. and making boys blush. This story is full of action and magic and weaves historical fact with fantastical fiction.
Inez has run away to Egypt from her life of opulence and luxury back in Buenos Aries, to find out what happened her parents, who have always run off to Egypt half of the year on these daring archeological adventures, leaving Inez behind. Upon arriving in Alexandria, she encounters the mysterious, yet handsome, handler that her uncle has tasked with getting Inez back on the next ship home to Argentina. In classic Isabel Ibanez style, our heroine runs off and thus starts the rivals-to-lovers plot set against the archeological sites of ancient Egypt, daring adventures along the Nile River, and high stakes life-or-death moments. I also love how Ibanez has thoughtfully laid out a plot around colonization of ancient cultures and theft of their artifacts.
Basically, if you loved The Mummy or Death on the Nile, pick this one up! I cannot wait for the second book and need it ASAP.

Historia
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

A Top Read for 2023
Revisado: 09-22-23
5 Stars
The perfect dark academia spooky FEMINIST RECLAIMING romance story for the fall 2023 season.
Other reviews have put it more eloquently and given this book the justice it deserves, but I’ll attempt to add my thoughts. A Study in Drowning is a multilayered tale that focuses on reclaiming one’s sense of self, their work, their sanity, and their purpose. It’s also a story around what the written word can mean to a person and how each reader can claim ownership over a story.
It’s also swoony and that plot doesn’t take away from the artful masterpiece being woven into the rest of the story.
I don’t know what to say exactly other than JUST READ IT. And on audio if you can.

An Enjoyable Read
Revisado: 02-17-23
3-3.5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book once we got past the conflict, but the ending felt rushed and the beginning had me struggling to really connect in a meaningful way with the characters.
Being in the world of the Singapore specialities was fascinating and watching Sam navigate that was intriguing and sometimes terrifying. The friends she met along the way really kept me on my toes and anxious as I waited for the other designer shoe to drop.
The romance between Tim and Sam was cute but felt rushed. I wish they had a better ending, but it did leave it hopeful (definitely not a definitive HEA). I felt like it could have been explored more and then would have really hit hard towards the end.
The best relationship and overall journey in this book that I truly loved was between Sam and her mom. The scene after the gala aas truly touching and healing and it was absolutely the best written part of this book.
Overall, The Fraud Squad was a quick and enjoyable book that had elements of romance but truly leaned more into what it means to be true to yourself and how to carve out your own future despite the life you were born into.
