As I began the journey of reading this book, I nearly wanted to stop before I began. The introductory materials felt excessive with the acknowledgements being at the beginning of the book along with the introduction and the preface. By the time I got to the actual book, I was about ready to give up on it. Not only was the quantity excessive, but the content itself felt excessive with the preface of him telling his readers how they are going to feel about their experience with his teachings. As I was listening to this part, it felt somewhat contrived to me.

The first part of the actual text was intriguing. I was fascinated with Haight's journey with divinity, first through his experiences with Christianity and then Buddhism, Daoism, and other religions as he grew older. I was impressed by his ability to find truth and understanding in all these schools of thought.

By the time I made it to the second part of The Unbound Soul, however, there was a jarring shift in tone and writing with a stark contrast of going from his autobiographical experiences to him telling his readers how to have the spiritual experiences he had. Many of these practices may have been more helpful with someone there to guide them along. However, it was easy to get lost in all of it without the proper guide being right there with you. While there are links to other materials, but these weren't very useful for someone listening to the audiobook.I think that had Haight continued in his methods of memoir writing to convey an understanding of his practices, it would have been much clearer to understand how to put his practices to work. For these reasons, I give it a 4 out of 5 star rating.

I do not think this work is one for everybody, though Haight's message of loving one another can be found in many religions, peoples, and cultures. It's a book for the open-minded and those seeking new ideas of spiritual guidance.
