Historia
It's nearly Christmas, Julia Devine's favourite time of the year. She's just programmed a wonderful lead into the holidays at Sunny Street Cinema, which leaves her plenty of time to worry about going home to Cumbria for Christmas. Her mum and stepdad are fine, but the thought of spending another holiday with her awful stepsister Becca is enough to make a Scrooge out of anyone. When Becca calls to let her know about the dreamy pilot she's bringing to Christmas lunch, Julia finally snaps and does something very silly.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

The most incredible book I have ever read
Revisado: 10-04-23
The narration by the author himself was wonderful and the story was engrossing. Place and characters came alive in a vivid way. I didn’t want it to end.

Beautiful and Grace-filled
Revisado: 09-26-23
Such a lovely description of the journey through life, led by Grace. I appreciate the examples of different people’s individual paths, to include the author’s. Well read by the narrator but I also might purchase the paperback version. Chapter 11 includes prompts for writing a spiritual biography. This would be easier if a pdf was included with these questions.

Historia
How do you cope when facing life-threatening illness, family conflict, faltering relationships, old trauma, obsessive thinking, overwhelming emotion, or inevitable loss? If you're like most people, chances are you react with fear and confusion, falling back on timeworn strategies: anger, self-judgment, and addictive behaviors. Though these old, conditioned attempts to control our life may offer fleeting relief, ultimately they leave us feeling isolated and mired in pain. There is another way.

Narration was poor
Revisado: 12-22-19
Narrator repeated lines, mispronounced even the author’s name, and sounded bored - making it difficult to listen. I regularly listen to Tara Brach’s podcasts and wished she had read her own book.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Finishing was an accomplishment
Revisado: 12-10-19
This was such a tedious book with too much distracting and irrelevant details.
The narrator sounded as bored as I was in many of the more rambling sections. Also, sounded like he used the same (irritating) voice for Mrs. Barber as he did Xandra - two very different women.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Beautiful prose, felt disjointed
Revisado: 12-11-18
I loved this story and the author was amazingly gifted with words. Due to the shifting perspectives and jumping around in time and place, the Audible may have been easier to follow with different readers. If reading the book, I could have referenced back to see the date on a previous page. The reader was great and his voice soothing- it sounded like how I imagined the recordings of Marie-Laure’s great-grandfather. I just wished there had been additional readers to offer clarity. Overall, an amazing book.
