Historia
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

I don’t get the hype.
Revisado: 03-22-25
This book was recommended to me over and over but I just couldn’t find myself caring about any of the characters. There was too much back story that felt pointless and didn’t actually contribute to me caring about what the characters did. The back and forth in timelines usually helps with mysteries but in this case it felt unsuccessful in what it was trying to achieve. Finished only because I hoped the ending would pay off which it really didn’t.

The life of a courtesan in Pompeii is glamorous yet perilous. At night in the home her patron bought for her, the house with the golden door, Amara’s dreams are haunted by her past. She longs for her sisterhood of friends—the women at the brothel she was forced to leave behind—and worse, finds herself pursued by the cruel and vindictive man who once owned her. To be truly free, she will need to be as ruthless as he is. Amara knows her existence in Pompeii is subject to Venus, the goddess of love. The editing was not great.
Revisado: 01-30-25
The narrator did a fine job but the editing was lacking. Especially when listening with headphones to the various swallows, breaths, background noise and more made it difficult for me to be immersed in the book. I kept cringing hoping it would get better, it never did. I hope the edit it better or re-record it in the future. Overall the story was good though.

Made the whole series worth it
Revisado: 11-17-24
I’ll be honest, the world building and So. Many. Types. Of. Creatures was almost too much in the first two books. I didn’t really care that deeply for anyone (other than Syrinx and Lehabah) but this book changed everything and while I didn’t LOVE the first two books, I appreciate them and understand why they were necessary. Enjoyed this a lot and looking forward to the next in the series :)

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

It was ok
Revisado: 10-25-24
Maybe it’s just not my cup of tea. The book felt well written but I found myself not really caring about the characters and zoning out at times. They were likable but the situations were frustrating and it annoyed me how they handled some situations. Not a bad story by any means just not for me.

This felt like it had potential but the way the ending happened kind of annoyed me and felt a little out of character for the protagonist so it fell a little flat for me.

Unique

It was a unique story with an interesting ending. Not a horror book that is gory or gruesome just because, everything felt necessary and held my interest the whole way through.

I love the performances of these books and they always come with a novella at the end which not only add to the value but also just as great as the books themselves.

Historia
In 1950, a young doctor called Norton Perina signs on with the anthropologist Paul Tallent for an expedition to the remote Micronesian island of Ivu'ivu in search of a rumored lost tribe. They succeed, finding not only that tribe but also a group of forest dwellers they dub "The Dreamers", who turn out to be fantastically long-lived but progressively more senile. Perina suspects the source of their longevity is a hard-to-find turtle; unable to resist the possibility of eternal life, he kills one and smuggles some meat back to the States.

Was a rough listen
Revisado: 07-10-24
If you are here because you loved A Little Life you will be disappointed. From the beginning I did not like Norton and while the ending was not surprising it was just infuriating that this character never grew or learned from anything he encountered.
Maybe I am not the target audience for this book because I struggled to listen to it every step of the way and did not enjoy any portion of this audiobook the entire process felt like work to get through.
