Why she yelling so loud??
Revisado: 05-31-24
The parts where people are shouting it’s way too loud and annoying. I prefer the less performative audio books but had started this one for free elsewhere so continued on. I watched the series first so wanted to fill in the gaps. Some of the obvs Tolkien riffs were a bit too much. I get giving a nod to the original master but like thinly veiled recreations of Tolkien characters and situations weren’t done very deftly. Some of the scenes and characters are near exact repros of stuff from LOTR trilogy books.
Much of the book is quite repetitive too, like how many dream scenes with the bad man do you need? Theres like 7 … just so so. Also having one of the main characters be completely antagonistic gets annoying.

Forestry not Forests
Revisado: 12-27-23
A FORESTRY MANAGERS viewpoint. Good info but it’s hard to hear when it’s always cloaked in forest “management”
Like how can we keep over harvesting wood instead of reusing wood… tree farms are not forests. And forests can’t be recreated or “regrown” they are their own entities, beings within themselves. Would benefit from a more completely ecological viewpoint.

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Amazing and much needed-bad performance
Revisado: 10-30-23
This book is what we all knew anyway. Science based and amazing. EXCEPT I seriously can’t believe he read parts using the accents of the people they are quoting. He did it in French and British accents. It’s pretty SMH embarrassing. Also much of the heteronormative language around parenting is extremely outdated and inappropriate.

The privileged white guys guide to “manifesting” success 🙄
Revisado: 01-27-23
Right so this guys big eye opening moment was being cheated on at 19 and feeling suicidal (probably the one month of his life he felt that way ever) then got in a car wreck and survived. Those were probably the 2 most (individually) traumatic experiences he ever had to deal with. No discussion whatsoever of trauma or ACES scores. He implies that habits alone are what drives everyone’s behavior. Like does he understand the limbic system??? 😂 does he understand trauma or major depressive disorder? Does he understand chronic trauma? Does he know abt inter generational trauma ? Does he understand being on meds just to not want to Jill yourself every month ?? JFC. Why are white rich guys famous for this type of bs ?? Who is this dick anyway ?? I could write a better more REAL book.

Historia
With exquisite care, National Book Critics Circle Award winner Louise Erdrich has fashioned a story rich in the way of life and heritage of the Ojibwa people, a story that begs to be told out loud. As each season in a year of Omakayas' life is lovingly portrayed, the satisfying rhythm of her days is shattered when a stranger visits the lodge one night, bringing with him an invisible enemy that will change things forever.

Historia
"The North" is simultaneously a location, a direction, and a mystical concept. Although this concept has ancient roots in mythology, folklore, and fairy tales, it continues to resonate today within modern culture. McIntosh leads listeners through the magical and spiritual history of the North, as well as its modern manifestations, as documented through physical records, such as runestones and megaliths, but also through mythology and lore. This mythic conception of a powerful, mysterious Northern civilization was known to the Greeks as "Hyberborea" - the "Land Beyond the North Wind".

Um… good info but the premise is totally racist
Revisado: 08-26-22
It took awhile but the thinly veiled racist premise is that all civilization descended from the northern master race, while trying to “discredit” the Nazis who popularized these ideas. Most cultures and civilizations had the similar conditions of astronomy poetry and architecture at the same time. It’s interesting but most indigenous cultures worldwide had similarities at the same periods and it wasn’t because it was descended all from the north. Why are there homogeneous god characters that are global? It isn’t because Vikings invented it all. Collective consciousness accounts for a lot of it. Overall hard to listen as it is arguing for a master Aryan race.
