Historia
For seasons, I have waited for her - my perfect mate. In a tribe full of happy couples, I am alone. But I am not content to remain this way. There are no eligible unmated females left, so I will do whatever it takes to bring females back to our tribe, even if it means doing something wrong. Even if it means I must purchase my mate on the intergalactic black market. I will do anything to possess her, to claim her as my own.

The worst part? Georgie and Vektal.
Revisado: 01-19-22
Excellent book, great narration. Honestly, the worst part of the book was Georgie and Vektal bring holier than thou about everything. Seriously, they're even worse than grumpy Bek. At least he's not malicious.

I'd have liked it better if all references to Left Hand's berdache lover wasn't cut entirely from the text. Content cutting is my biggest gripe with the dramatic versions of these audio books.
Still, voices were good, sound effects A+. Don't regret the purchase.

Seasons ago, I resonated to the quietest of tribesmates, a male content to love me from afar while I was the center of attention. We could have been happy. Despite our differences, I loved him, and he loved me. But then a terrible thing happened...and my world was never the same again. Now, resonance is giving us a second chance, but...I'm afraid. What if what I have with my mate is too broken to be fixed? What if there's no hope left for us at all?

One of my favorites
Revisado: 09-26-21
This book is one of my top books in the series, and high on the list in general for books that copes with the loss of a child, grief, and some kind of recovery.
Trigger warnings for infant death (not graphic or violent), depression, miscommunication during grieving that leads to abandonment, and all that stuff.
Hemalo mittens for the death of his and Asha's premature daughter some years ago (~5?). Asha does as well but her grief is tied in with self loathing because she blames herself for not carrying the baby to term.
Asha reacts to pain and sadness with anger in self defense, tried to hook up with others on earlier books to reclaim something of her past self when the ways she and her mate mourned clashed. Hemalo mourns in silence and trying to be the rock for others. He thinks that if something is hurting another (him being around hurting Asha), then to make it better, he should remove the thing that hurts them.
While I get where he's coming from, it kind of messed with Asha's already torn up emotional state. Honestly, I DO think it was a good move for him - they fought bitterly until he left and peacing out gave him room and her a little more of a jolt.
EITHER WAY, this book deals with their path well, fleshes both out, and gives them the HEA they deserve. Along the way it's made clear that no, you don't "get over" the death of your child but that it is possible to move forward with life.
I saw some reviews didn't like the Claire POV. I get why, though I liked them. We don't see a lot of Claire to begin with, so I found it nice to get to know the quiet girl who has existed on the peripherals of the books so far. Plus it gives us a view into Bek as well and how he has grown.
Overall, the content can be rough but it's worth it and I enjoyed it

Revisado: 08-02-21
Ugh. I didn't mind the main dude for most of it - generic but not terrible. Ingrid is awesome. The last twenty minutes liked it for me, though - Rob is officially my least favorite. Just. The last twenty minutes had me telling my phone to frick off consistently.

I dug the book
Revisado: 07-31-21
I'm writing this to state two things:
1. I really liked the book. It won't displace Cordelia and Brenden as my fave story but it ranks right up there with Sonya and Jillian. Heroine is delightful, Jon is an anxious traumatized bro with self esteem issues who also knows his worth in certain areas of his life. After Zed and Dani's story, I always get nervous that Zed will be badly written but thankfully that didn't leak back here.
2. When am I going to get an Alex book?! He gets more endearing with each story and he wasn't a jerkface to begin with. I'm half shipping him and Eva. Fingers crossed that the next one (preferably both) is Alex

Laughing so hard
Revisado: 01-04-21
"Stop persisting in the delusion that you are good at fencing. You're very bad at fencing, I cannot stress that enough."
It's very fanfic-esque in plotline but I don't say that as a bad thing. I've listened to the line quoted above like ten times and I'm still laughing.
While performance and story are for stars, the whole book for five due to how delightful it is. Listen to this book. It's ridiculous and wonderful.
After you've listened to this book, good listen to On Other Land also by the author. Amazing.

Historia
Beast has been disfigured in a fire, but he's covered his skin with tattoos to make sure no one mistakes his scars for weakness. The accident not only hurt his body, but damaged his soul and self-esteem, so he's wrapped himself in a tight cocoon of violence and mayhem where no one can reach him. Until one night, when he finds a young man covered in blood in their clubhouse. Sweet, innocent, and as beautiful as an angel fallen from heaven, Laurent pulls on all of Beast's heartstrings.

Highly uncomfortable
Revisado: 08-30-20
I stopped after Beast punished and humiliated Laurent for not wanting to sleep with him because they're had a great day. Despite knowing Laurent was traumatized, had had something bad happen to him at the hands of a violent but seemingly kind man. Despite being told that after one day, Laurent didn't want to have sex, especially after Beast called him some very cruel things and lashed out.
Good narrator, easy listening writing, interesting plot, but I can't recommend this book based on what's going down. Six hours in and just... Yeah. I can't "hang in there", not with this as the set up for romance.

"Red Wine and Blood": The Blood Wars raged for centuries across Boston. Witness a brief glimpse into the brutal history of the Wars with Ignacio Salvatore and the vampire he loves, Ashwin Metcalfe, in 1897. "A History of Trouble": Angel was joking when he asked O'Malley if someone resurrected a mammoth. Little did he know that was exactly what someone did. "A Dragon in the City": What happens when Eroch goes adventuring in Beacon Hill without Angel? Chaos, pure chaos. "Fae's Gold": Daniel is helping the newly-resurrected fae, Ruairi Brennan, become accustomed to modern-day living.

I would end the world for Rory and Daniel
Revisado: 08-30-20
The first story is fab and I want to know way more about the first(?) Salvatore/vampire bond, especially since it's mentioned it'll take about thirty years total for the bond to settle fully in place rather than the weeks/months it took his descendents.
Mammoth story was delightful because... Angel. People being dumb, Angel being exasperated, magic going wonky. Mammoths. A day in Erochs life was interesting and one Id listen to again! Not my fave of the four but definitely fun.
The majority of the book is the last Fae's Gold and it is everything I need in my life. This story brings me utter joy, though one of the main cast being "he's a pasychopath!" When Cian comes up makes me sigh. Being a psychopath doesn't mean cold blooded murderer - it doesn't make a person BAD. Cian did bad things and felt no remorse about it, but I dare any of the main cast to say they'd not do the same if the literal half of their soul was going to die after years beyond counting, from birth, and they thought they could save them at the cost of some lives of people they didn't know.
That aside, this story is everything glorious in the world. I need the story of Daniel and Rory like air and I'm so excited for it. Daniel is blatant but hesitant, Rory respectful but also makes his affection known. The casual physical care between the two is sweet and slow. Rory will protect Daniel at all costs but Daniel also doesn't hesitate to step in to do damage control insofar as he can.
I just. I love them. As much as I enjoyed the other stories, I'd have bought this audiobook (and book) just for Fae's Gold.
... Which I did. I bought them both for Fae's Gold. Enjoying the others was just bonus.

This is a book meant to be listened, not read
Revisado: 08-27-20
(ETA: Amazon removed all my paragraph breaks. Ugh.)
I need to preface this saying I've listened to the series at least thrice and fully enjoy them, as well as reading this particular novel prior to the audio release. My review includes some critiques of the series as a whole and flippancy, but none of it is in malice or distaste.
The narrator is amazing and one of my favorites I've listened to - before this book was released on audible, I read it in Kindle form after listening to the others because I loved the characters and growth. Maybe it's because I'm a fast reader, but on paper and without the narrators inflections, I wasn't able to feel the same amount of character growth and relationship development that made me feel as if it were organic. Listening to it set a pace and tone that facilitated that growth and stopped the keening voice of "wtf is everyone doing being all shipper on deck it's been five minutes."
I'm still going to read book 5 first if the audio is delayed, as I would murder the world for more Rory and Daniel and it is the only thing I'm still looking forward to in 2020.
This review isn't to slam on the authors voice or talent. SJ Himes broke away from describing the same things in every chapter (did you all know Simeon tastes of mint and chocolate? or Angel is attached to the primordial death magic that animates the sentient undead?) so, bonus.
The juxtaposition between Simeon and Angels fast-and-hot start and kinks after two years of UST against the sweet, supportive infatuation turned gentle and passionate romance of Isaac and Constans is VERY well written. I was constantly impressed with the vastly different POV voices between Isaac and Angel, how their various strengths and weaknesses were highlighted, and the effect it has on those around them. Isaac's recovery from addiction and PTSD is amazingly touched on.
At first read, Isaacs dramatic shift from surly kid to fawning, sweet, concerned for others kid was... disliked on my end. Again, it may have been the narrator and/or my lack of appreciation for the running statement that who Isaac was before was addiction and guilt, and that he is trying to find who he is without those cornerstones. As someone who went undiagnosed for over twenty years for various chemical imbalances, I should have known to look at it that way, so that is on me.
Other reviews are right: the supportive Constants is awesome. Bring able to see how he treats those in his care helped a LOT in understanding why he'd find contentment with Isaac - mild spoiler alert, but Batiste thrives on caring for others and finds joy in bringing it to those he loves.
I've got to say it, though - I NEED my headcanon that once a mate bond starts to establish, all the feelings develop quickly in a sort of vampire defense to help secure it. The relatively quick fall into love makes me wrinkle my nose otherwise (as well written and organic as it may be), so I comfort that nose with that headcanon. I hope SJ doesn't read this, get mad, and be like "No, you wrong", though she doesn't seem the type. the headcanon isn't meant as criticism.
OH. major awesome high fives for the inclusion of more POC, non-binary, and varied love matches with a highlight on those not of cis white people. I didn't find the other books LACKING, mind, but they were more prominent here.
Did I mention I love Rory? Because I do. I love Rory.

Will Pattons low and subtle performance is stellar. I made sure to go forward to confirm he did the other three books, lest I be disappointed. brilliant decision for those who make them in hosting him for the entirety of the Raven Cycle.
the book in and of itself is, per usual, a glorious performance all its own. I've read the hardcopy with glee, and the audiobook provided another layer to the tale told - a good one.
