Dialogue
Revisado: 09-11-24
The author’s stories are always interesting and surprising. But far more important is the realistic dialogue among plausible people. I admire the primary characters and cherish hanging out with them. And Guidall is perfect.

tedious teen angst
Revisado: 07-15-23
Girl in the Painting, also by Cooper, is an interesting story, well read. But it's tedious teen angst dragged heavily on the story, especially early on. Of course, character development is important, But Cooper provide endless detail about the girls travails, many trivial. So, after an hour or so of Fossil Hunter, I could not longer stand the tedium and gave it up. I good tough editor could significantly improve this book. Or classify it for teens.

musical literature
Revisado: 07-07-23
Over the years, I've become so enamored with Patrick Tull's narration that I might listen to him read the phone book. Fortunately that unhappy scenario is unnecessary. While listening to Leper of St Giles, I was struck by the strong feeling that Tull reading Ellis Peters is like a genius musician composing for a brilliant poet's lyrics. And that comment describes each page, regardless of the larger story. Fortunately Ellis's story also is excellent. Unfortunately, Patrick Tull has narrated his last.

bloody awful
Revisado: 08-03-22
I've enjoyed many Dick Francis novels. This one does not deserve his name on the cover. Its plot is reasonably interesting, though it depends on obvious mistakes and omissions by the protagonist, and ridiculous coincidences to rescue the him. Also, relevant facts and protagonist concerns are repeated ad nauseum, and the dialog is cliche ridden, trite, and sophomoric.

Historia
While the Civil War raged in America, another very different revolution was beginning to take shape across the Atlantic, in the studios of Paris. The artists who would make Impressionism the most popular art form in history were showing their first paintings amid scorn and derision from the French artistic establishment. Indeed, no artistic movement has ever been, at its inception, quite so controversial.

tedious detail
Revisado: 10-12-20
I love this period and place in art, want to understand it more. And I found much of King's book interesting. But it contains the kind of relentless minute detail one might expect in an art-history doctoral dissertation. It was so tedious that my attention often wandered. Same is true of King's Brunelleschi's Dome. I'd hoped Judgement of Paris would not be as bad. This is my last Ross King book
