Back home in Bartertown once more, Mihalis is working on advancing his plans to turn Bartertown into the kind of place where the rich and powerful come to make those special deals they prefer to do out of sight of both the public and certain governments. He's also spending a fair deal of his time over at HoJo's, where Talin and Caitin's sisters are still very interested in him. Now if only he would stop being ambushed by assassins afterward—it's definitely becoming quite annoying.

Mihalis finds himself in a new situation—one in which all of the training he's received growing up isn't helping him to cope as much as he'd hoped. He's angry. He's never truly been angry before in his life, and the anger he's dealing with isn't even coming from him! It's coming from the djevels. His lion side, he's discovered, is far less affected by it than his dark elf, which only makes sense when you consider his dark elf heritage. If he wants to pull himself back together, he needs to understand just what he's dealing with and how to manage it.

Despite Selene’s attempt at manipulating him, Anthony is back on his feet–thanks to Marianne. His new vampire roommate has been proving talented at not just housework, but also at helping him with other matters. It’s only a matter of time before he takes their relationship to the next level. The peace conference is coming up soon, and many dignitaries are arriving on Academy Island to re-sign the Demonic Covenant, the treatise that allows humans and demons to co-exist. But there are people working in the background who do not want peace, and will stop at nothing to destroy it.

Raised to the blade by his mother, and taught not only her ways as well as a good many of the ways of her people, but also the ways of his father's other wives, as well as the ways of his magic, Mihalis has had a very thorough education.

New world. New body. Mind-blowing possibilities. Maybe this world full of jaw-droppingly beautiful women and martial arts magic is just some sort of delusion. Maybe this strong, capable body I’ve found myself in isn’t real. But if it is, then there’s a path that could lead me to everything I’ve ever desired. The training comes first.

Several years have passed since the war with the djevels ended, the reality they'd infested was destroyed, and their king killed.
