Historia
Thirty years have passed since Christine and her father, Heinz, vacationed together. It was such a disaster - an exasperated Heinz left the moody teenager at a gas station to teach her a lesson - that Christine vowed never to travel with him again. But now her mother is insisting that Christine and her best friend, Dorothea, take Heinz along on what is supposed to be a relaxing girls’ trip to the beach. And she’s not taking no for an answer. Suddenly Christine and Dorothea have a chaperone, though high school is long since over.

Not funny to me
Revisado: 08-07-13
I think this is supposed to be a romantic comedy, but I just couldn't appreciate the humor in a self-centered 70-something father treating his 40-something daughter like a teenager. Maybe if the daughter ever told him off I'd have been happier. In all, it's a light read. Okay for the beach.

Historia
Louise Watkins has her hands full. Her mother had been the town midwife, but after her daughter Alice died under her care, she refused to assist in another childbirth. So Louise has assumed the work. She also takes care of Alice's six-year old, Charlotte, because the child's father was lost in World War I. But Louise's principal job is running the boardinghouse that is the family's main source of income. One day, Charlotte befriends a stranger, a man who has taken refuge in an old cabin in the woods nearby....

Enjoyable but don't expect great writing
Revisado: 10-22-10
The Publisher’s Statement is somewhat “off”. The main character’s name is Rachel, not Louise. She learns the strangers identity before he leaves his sickbed, he never does odd jobs around the house and his voice has absolutely no relevance. Other than that, the gist of the plot is there.
This was a nice enough little romance. But the reader was not all that good. And the writing was a little amateurish, with overly trite similes, somewhat unnatural dialogue and characters that did not stay in character.
That being said, I did want to listen to the end and enjoyed it reasonably well. As long as you are not expecting great literature you might enjoy it, too.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

great book for audio format and a great story
Revisado: 05-26-09
Simply one of the most lovely books I have read or listened to. I couldn't take my earphones out and am now a bit sorry I have raced through it so fast. I will listen to it again. And perhaps I will read it myself in print to savor it slowly.
They story and characters reveal themselves in such a natural way. And the wonderful readers bring and added charm to the telling.
If you want a novel to be all fast-action plot with little character development, you may agree with the reviewer who gave this book only one star. But if you love a thoughtful story with marvelous character development, don't miss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Historia
From Anna Akhmatova to Stefan Zweig, via Charles de Gaulle, Hitler, Thomas Mann and Charlie Chaplin, this varied and unfailingly absorbing book is both story and history, both public memoir and personal record - and provides an essential field-guide to the vast movements of taste, intellect, politics and delusion that helped to prepare the times we live in now.

I wish it were unabridged
Revisado: 02-06-09
I don't usually listen to unabridged texts, so this was a happy accident. Clive James is an excellent reader of his own work. His thought provoking commentary has broadened my literary and cultural horizons. I wish I could have heard all of it.

Historia
How is Animals in Translation different from every other animal book ever published? Animals in Translation is like no other animal book because of Temple Grandin. As an animal scientist and a person with autism, her professional training and personal history have created a perspective like no other thinker in the field, and this is her exciting, groundbreaking view of the intersection of autism and animal.

Must read for anyone interested in animal behavior
Revisado: 06-28-05
I have now listened to Animals in Translation twice through. I find Temple Grandin's personal insights intriguing. The numerous discussions of related research, both well-known past and lesser-known current research, are enhanced by her unique perspective. And she provides the best case against micro-managed evaluation, and for results based evaluation, I have ever heard.
I disagree strongly with the reviewer who found this book "painful" to listen to. While the writing style is not polished and certain phraseology is repeated, Ms. Grandin admits that language is very difficult for her and that the hurtful childhood tease "Tape Recorder" was rather apt. She gives abundant credit to other researchers and she makes it clear when she is speculating. And I did not find her self-aggrandizing. Besides, Skinner was wrong.
