Not as good as the first - enters pg-13 territory

It's good but not quite as engaging as I've come to expect from Actus. Perhaps because I finished his Eldritch Horror series between book one and 2 of Living Forge, I just didn't find myself caring what happened after halfway through. Book one had me really interested in the smithing aspect, but this one just left me a little flat and bored. Again, perhaps because I enjoyed Eldritch too much and was on a high from finishing it. I pushed myself to nearly finish book 2, but ultimately decided to return it and check out his Runebound Professor series. In general, his writing is well above average (especially for the genre) and his concepts are fantastic. I also really appreciate his approach to relationships. Most other authors rush the main romance. They see each other and almost immediate want to make babies. Actus makes these relationships much more believable and deeper. You want them to work out and care about the feelings of the characters as they get to know each other.

Note to parents of younger kids:
One of my favorite things about Actus has been that I can let me 10 year old daughter listen to his books. His clever use of cursing like '8 planes!', 'God spit!' or 'he turned and let out a curse' has allowed me to pass on these books to her without worrying about strong swear words ringing in her ears all day. She absolutely devours these, time and again, so it's important. Unfortunately, with this book, he has gone to more conventional words like f-bombs, s**t and GD, and there are plenty of them. Also, he made one of the characters queer, so for me, it's inappropriate for my 10 year old for that reason too. For these 2 reasons, I would say this is more of a late teen and older book. I'm sure we'll circle back around to this when she's older since we really to like his work, As I remember, Morcster Chef is excellent for young ears, maybe just a few 'd words', so I'd recommend that one for pre-teens.

Takes the basic isekai tropes and uses them well

Yes, it has some of the standard isekai/litrpg fanfare, but it comes out as something much more unique and interesting. Narration is quite good also. Looking forward to this series.

The first book was very decent and really fun. this one is actually even better. The production quality is great and I love hearing how they did Chester's voice. Some of the story elements are actually not as predictable as most of these books and I found it quite enjoyable.

Great story, of course. Great narration of course. I've always loved Tim Curry. He gives a fantastic reading of a classic.

fantastic vo and story

Worth it. Surprisingly great and the VO is the best I've heard in a while. Most light novels I've been listening to have some of the worst VO.

Narration is too bad to listen to more

Stands tall among light novels. There isn't a lot more here than the anime though. I was hoping there was more in the novels similar to Overlord, but it's still good and it's just the first book. I won't be getting more on audible though. The narration is seriously that bad. His reading isn't the worst, but he is somewhat robotic often, his voices not good, and his sound effects are HORRIBLE! Just stop! read the sound effect, don't pronounce it. I might buy the next physical book at some point.

It's almost a side story, but it's still great. It's a necessary book that sets up the following. But still, it is great on its own.

Why is this so good?

I didn't expect a free book in such a congested genre to be this good. I actually loved the 'Zelda' aspect to everything. He definitely came at the genre from a slightly different perspective and it pays off. He could have easily said a girl dies and gets reincarnated into a 'dnd meets zelda' universe, but I like his way better.
