Historia
The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

Thorough.
Revisado: 05-16-24
Material is thorough and exhaustive of much of the period. The reader’s pronunciation of Acre bothered me throughout for some reason but that didn’t affect my review. Writer had an air of ‘I know more than you’ when discussing other scholars which sometimes came across as arrogant. Other than those little things the rest of the experience was an extensive walkthrough of the entire military and political history of all the crusades.

The Koran: It may be the most controversial book in the world. Some see it as a paean to peace, others call it a violent mandate for worldwide Islamic supremacy. How can one book lead to such dramatically different conclusions?

Historia
In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be listened to in its historical context - from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries....

Honest
Revisado: 03-17-24
If you are a fundamentalist evangelical who believes in the literal interpretation of the Bible you may be in for some uncomfortable listening… On the other hand if you are a Christian who wants to understand more about the scripture from which all faith is derived, who isn’t scared to look the horse in the mouth, and wants to challenge your faith and see where you stand, then this is the book for you.
As a former Atheist who pities my former comrades, I was confronted with many things I didn’t want to hear, however it doesn’t shake my faith in the Lord. I know that regardless of where the scripture came from, living a Christian life is the best life there is for me. Read it, and you decide.

The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

Until you’ve listened to or read all three of these volumes. They read like a novel and the reader obviously enjoys what he is talking about and provides just the right amount of drama to go along with the tone of the book. Superb!

My title explains itself. But it's misleading. There are more than 40 reasons. Each of my reasons is an independent point, so I have not organized this book by a succession of chapters or headings. After all, most people only remember a few big ideas or separate points after reading or listening to a book. I've never heard anyone say "Oh, that was a good continuous-process-of-logically-ordered-argumentation" but I've often heard people say, "Oh, that was a good point." And back to my main point: "Why are you a Catholic?" is a good question. A good question deserves a good answer.

Good but accusatory
Revisado: 03-23-23
I’ll preface this by stating I believe all of what was said however I don’t find that this is a good way to convince any Protestant to convert. The tone of the reader sounds like a machine. The tone of the writing gives a ‘holier than thou’ connotation. The reasons, logic of, and ideas about dogma are stated very plainly without much background. In essence I got ‘the church is infallible because it is infallible.’ There were light reasons and basic arguments about it but in no way did the author give his reasons for being catholic in a sense that would drive any hardline Protestant to think about converting. I’ve been catholic my whole life and even I felt as though the author thinks he’s better than me because he understands more about the church. Though this wasn’t the intention the overall tone and themes point to this subconscious belief in my opinion; which is just that, an opinion. It is a good book for Catholics who may be confronted with a lot of questions from Protestants they are unable to answer about why we do certain things. In that respect it did give 40 good answers to these questions such as ‘why do you believe you need a priest to absolve you of your sins?’ If that’s what you need right now then this is the book for you. But beware that the answers you give based on this book will result in more questions than answers for your Protestant inquisitors.

The Bible tells a story. The events of the Bible are exciting and awe inspiring, but often the story can get lost among the laws, genealogies, and poetry. Here, Dr. William Marty retells the entire story of the Bible in one accessible, chronological account. All the stories you remember, and many of those you don't, are part of one grand narrative. It's the must-listen story of God's pursuit of you - one you'll want to hear again and again.

A self-proclaimed skeptic, the food writer dismissed rumors of a mischievous resident poltergeist named Lucy when he moved in, but he quickly found himself at a loss to explain the disembodied footsteps and mysterious odors that seemed to plague the old house. Soon, he was talking to neighbors and fellow homeowners, and it seemed that everyone had stories of strange events and supernatural occurrences in their own dwellings. As a result, David set out to document and research these reports...

The tone and story writing are definitely of someone moving about the higher auspices of the elite educational institutions of America. Not exactly what I was expecting though well written. More like a scholarly journal of researched ghost stories I’d find in JSTOR than just a collection of local folklore. Author seems to be defending his interest in the subject by portraying skepticism at every possible juncture.
