Historia
White Americans have long been comfortable in the assumption that they are the cultural norm. Now that notion is being challenged, as white people wrestle with what it means to be part of a fast-changing, truly multicultural nation. Facing chronic economic insecurity, a popular culture that reflects the nation's diverse cultural reality, and a future in which they will no longer constitute the majority of the population, and with a black president in the White House, whites are growing anxious.

Historia
Around the world, populist movements are gaining traction among the white working class. Meanwhile, members of the professional elite - journalists, managers, and establishment politicians - are on the outside looking in, left to argue over the reasons. Williams explains that many people have conflated "working class" with "poor" - but the working class is, in fact, the elusive, purportedly disappearing middle class. They often resent the poor and the professionals alike. But they don't resent the truly rich.

A must read for Democrats and Progressives!
Revisado: 05-02-24
The author nails the reasons why white blue collar workers feel abandoned by the Democratic Party and feel looked down on by elite liberals. The book is extremely well organized and gives invaluable insight into the cultural differences between upper white collar and blue collar workers and the misconceptions many Democrats hold about white working class workers. She vividly describes the reality of their lives and how that affects their political views. I’ll be reading this one again!

Ends in the middle of the action
Revisado: 02-11-23
I’m enjoying the series but this book doesn’t stand on its own the way the first one did. It’s the middle section of what is essentially one long book, not that that is bad, it just felt unsatisfying the way it quickly ended.
The final part (last half hour) of this book felt too rushed. It leaves you at a major turning point like the final episode of a season that will pick up where it left off for the final season. She’s a great writer so I have high expectations for the final book. I definitely recommend you plan on buying the whole trilogy.

Historia
How do you explain Liz Phair? Looking at her career, the word fearless seems the right place to start. In Never Said Nothing, the latest in Audible’s Words + Music series, Phair charts her unlikely journey from making her first record - one that’s now ensconced on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” - to a trial by fire (she’d never set foot on stage before its release), to even more improbably, a second and a third, maybe fourth act, depending on how one counts these things.

Her life, her songs, and the stories behind them
Revisado: 06-23-22
I didn’t know her music until I heard Liz Phair in concert a couple of years ago. I learned so much about her life and the stories behind the songs she performs in this audiobook. This and her book Horror Stories will make you appreciate this very talented woman. I love this audible series. I’ve listened to this one multiple times!

Historia
Balmy evenings in rural Maryland are fraught with danger, and seductions can happen anywhere from a river bank to the front seat of a car, where a young self-conscious girl is learning to drive. To Li'l Bit, the radio is the most important part of the car, but the pop music of the 50's can never quite drown out the harrowing images in her mind.

Trigger warning

After listening to this play you will understand how a family member or other trusted adult can groom a child for sexual abuse. Paula Vogel is brilliant. The topic of this play is horrifying. I feel for anyone who has experienced this.

Historia
A group of politically correct teachers are tasked with creating a Thanksgiving play for their students. They hire a Native American actor to lend authenticity to the proceedings. When it turns out she’s ethnically ambiguous the teachers are left to navigate the resulting pitfalls in this rich satire. Includes a conversation with playwright Larissa FastHorse.

Painfully over exaggerated
Revisado: 04-17-22
I know it’s a satire and the playwright won a McArthur genius award but it was so over the top stereotype and caricature of “woke” white liberals that it took away the impact of the message for me. Mostly the exaggeration by the actors was what ruined it for me IMHO.

Such an inspiration and compelling story
Revisado: 01-23-22
I particularly enjoyed having the author read this one. Her passion really comes through. I never heard of He for She and now will never forget what it has done to promote gender equality. But what I enjoyed the most was her personal story of her life so far and the people in her life. The beauty of Africa and her people and the spirit of Ubuntu underneath it all.

Historia
Dr. Faith Harper lays it all out: what anxiety is, what it's good for - that's right, it's actually a necessary response that helps to keep us alive in bad situations - how to know when it's gone overboard, and practical tips on how to deal with it when it gets bad. This book is a lifesaver for panic attacks, breaking out of flight-or-fight-or-freeze responses, and for chronic anxiety. It's also good for folks who aren't daily burdened by anxiety, but want to better cope with those tough situations that affect us all.

Foul language ruins this
Revisado: 12-09-21
Foul language constantly is appropriate for comedy or fiction but was inexcusable and unprofessional here. It’s a shame because the info was good otherwise. I’m surprised the narrator agreed to take this one.
