Burnt out and in need of retreat, a middle-aged woman leaves Sydney to return to the place she grew up, taking refuge in a small religious community hidden away on the stark plains of rural Australia. Beautiful and interesting story
Revisado: 02-14-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this quiet, thoughtful story. It is one woman's experience and reminiscences on life and nature set in a unique time of pandemic, yet able to be separate from the chaos of the world. The narration was excellent and I would highly recommend this book.

The incredibly moving and uplifting new novel from the author of The Man I Think I Know. Kerry Hayes knows exactly who she is: a single mum, a cleaner and Mariah Carey's biggest fan. Noah Martineau thinks he knows who he is: a successful barrister, with a wife, daughter and big house in Primrose Hill. Strangers with nothing in common. Strangers living worlds apart. But it wasn't always this way...and Noah and Kerry are about to discover just who they really are.

Revisado: 11-26-24
I have enjoyed all of Mike Gayle's books, and this is no exception. The beautifully developed and easy to love characters are people I will not soon forget. This is the kind of story sticks with you. I think it is one of Gayle's best.

Historia
When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she’ll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards. The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign—but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide.

Bad narration
Revisado: 11-11-24
I had heard really good things about this book, and perhaps if I read it myself I would have had a different impression. The narration was very poor. It sounded like high school students reading aloud in class. Ruthie/Norma was particularly bad with mispronunciation. It seemed like there was no rehearsal prior to the recording. For example, the word 'mishapen' was pronounced 'mis-happen'. Very odd for a professional narration. I made it about 1/3 through and could not take it. I wish I had stopped sooner so I could have received a refund.

Good story but sometimes tough to get through
Revisado: 02-15-24
I really liked the plot of this story, but like others sometimes found the writing to be more YA caliber. I also noticed some inaccuracies that left me wondering about the research behind it. For example, a character is given pitocin to induce labor in 1950, but pitocin was first synthesized in 1953 and not widely used for several more years. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, it seems more likely that Ruby would study ophthalmology rather than optometry given her research hopes. In addition, many of the characters seemed like stereotypes: rich people are snobby and unkind, white people are racist and cruel. Overall, it seemed like an oversimplification of a complex topic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a feel-good book but also manages to introduce depth to the characters within the context of Korean society. The narrator was great as well. I would highly recommend.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Ambitious and wonderful
Revisado: 10-27-23
This is a very long book, but in my opinion, well worth the time. It is a simmer rather than a boil. The main characters are beautifully drawn and well developed. I learned so much about Imdia in different points in time. I also loved how seemingly disparate characters were actually intertwined. It is an investment with rich rewards.

Very strange and sad story
Revisado: 10-12-22
This book is not what I expected or hoped. The narrator's voice was quite dry and the accents used were all over the place. The story itself was depressing and full of unanswered questions.

Now, in a longawaited followup, Mogel addresses the question she hears most frequently: what to do when those children become teenagers, their sense of independence and entitlement grows, the pressure to compete and succeed skyrockets, and communication becomes fraught with obstacles.

Revisado: 06-23-21
The Frequency of Us was such a lovely and pleasant surprise. I began listening knowing very little about the story and thoroughly enjoyed hearing it unfold. The book successfully captures so many ideas in one plot. It spans historical fiction, romance, science fiction, and more with a seamless writing style. I would highly recommend this unique and touching story.
