Interesting prequel, but not much of a story

I think if you're already excited by Robin Sloan's other works, then this short story might work. But as a newcomer, I found it only mildly interesting. Yes, there's an interesting "high concept" but the plot and characters are not compelling. It's interesting but definitely below average when compared to other short stories.

I read this book following a good interview I heard with the author and eager to see how the author was inspired by golden age writers like Agatha Christi. What I got was a somewhat plodding novel with cardboard thin characters. The story picked up in the final third, but it was more that the detective stumbled into the solution than brought much brain power to it. The so-called final twist was laughable and seemed to be completely tacked on. Narration was good, but overall this book is a disappointment.

Another Brilliant Horowitz novel

Anthony Horowitz has done it again. This is a brilliant addition to the Hawthorne series wherein Horowitz works with private detective and former cop Daniel Hawthorne. Unlike the prior books, this is about a case that took place some years back. I think this is the best in the series. He's taken great inspiration from the classic "locked room" mysteries of the golden age of detection and created a brilliant work. Highly recommended. No need to read the books in order, just dive right in!

Great historical fiction around JFK's pacific post

This is a historical WWII novel in the Billy Boyle series. This book is set in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific theater. Billy Boyle and his Polish baron sidekick Kaz are sent to the Solomon Islands to investigate the death of local native. A complication arises because Jack’s sometime Boston friend and nemesis Jack Kennedy is considered a suspect. Former American Ambassador Joe Kennedy has put forward Boyle to lead the investigation so that if any charges stick, they can show that Boyle had a vendetta.

It's puts Boyle in an interesting bind as he and Kaz start their investigation. Gradually, the background of Boyle’s animosity toward Kennedy is revealed. Kennedy’s recovery from injury enables a nice arc of redemption for Kennedy from self-centered rich-kid playboy to a respected captain of a new experimental armored PT boat.

Benn captures atmosphere and of jungle island fighting against the Japanese replete with bomber attacks, snipers and hand-to-hand combat. He also provides an interesting background on the lucrative coconut plantations operated by Lever brothers and independent operators employee local labor. Benn offers an insightful commentary on the war without becoming heavy handed.

The murder mystery gets a bit more complicated with a widening cast of characters including coast watchers alerting allies to Japanese incursions, shady Australians and Chinese and gung-ho American marines and uppity officers. The resolution was dramatic and well done. All told, this is one of Benn's best books. If you're not familiar with the Billy Boyle series, don't worry, this is as good a place to dive in as any.

Note: the audiobook did not include the important Author’s note that details the historical facts which underpin the story.

While I have not read all of the Billy Boyle books, every one is great. Blue Madonna, like the others, is historically accurate concerning the increasing theft of army supplies by deserters and criminal gangs. Billy gets called in to help investigate, which also leads to some action in occupied France. The story has good pacing and also includes a murder mystery with some interesting twists. I wouldn't say this is the best Billy Boyle story, but it's solid and a good lead up to D-Day. Note that you can read the books in any order you like. One minor problem: this audiobook does not include the short author's note at the end which provides more historic context for the story.

This was an enjoyable book, especially for those familiar with many classic "perfect murder" books, such as those mentioned in the story (e.g. The ABC Murders, Strangers On A Train, etc.) It's got a slow build with a somewhat reliable narrator, and things get a bit creepier as they go. That said, I did not think the ending lived up to the promise of the premise. Still worth reading.

Spillane's best work

Spillane is most famous for his Mike Hammer series and Max Allan Collins completed half a dozen additional Hammer titles from Spillane's unfinished manuscripts. Those are terrific books and show why Spillane was the best-selling author for decades. This book was in progress when Spillane died and was completed by Collins and published by Hard Case Crime (with a somewhat underwhelming cover.) Arguably, it's Spillane's best work. It's the story of a recently retired cop from New York who retires to Florida and then gets involved in the case of a missing girl-friend, long thought dead, who had some evidence against the mob. The tale grows complex and a bit melodramatic, but it's a great story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Highly recommended!

A great mystery, Spillane's best yet

This “final” Mike Hammer novel was completed from a Spillane draft by Max Allan Collins. It combines several interweaving plots, an unsuccessful hit on Mike Hammer, a spate of random cop killings, a confession that redeems the bowery bum killer after 40 years and missing mob money. This is one of the more intricately plotted Hammer books. It comes together very well in a classic manner that is still not predictable. Fast paced, a good mystery and some nice surprises. Overall one of the best. Narration by Stacy Keach is excellent.

I'm a fan of Peter Clines and have enjoyed several of his books. This one is a bit more speculative. It's four separate, loosely connected tails six months after a virus has killed millions of people by turning them into flesh-eating zombies. So if you're still a bit Covid-averse, this might not be to your liking. Clines has created an interesting post-apocalyptic world with interesting characters, but it's not a novel with a conventional protagonist or story through all four sections. They are short stories without and dramatic resolution. I think if he had developed it into a complete novel, it would have been much stronger.

I've read quite a bit of Lawrence Block over the years, but only recently read my first "burglar" book in the Bernie Rhodenbarr series. Although it's not the first book in the series, Block says it's a good one to start with and who am I to disagree. It's a great heist story about a rare and possibly faked book by Rudyard Kipling. Things get complicated with many potential buyers, thieves, cops, and other events. It's a fun book where the mystery gradually deepens. Narration is great. Highly recommended.
