Historia
One of the most influential works of this century, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays is a crucial exposition of existentialist thought. Influenced by works such as Don Juan and the novels of Kafka, these essays begin with a meditation on suicide; the question of living or not living in a universe devoid of order or meaning.

The philosophy and forced introspection
Revisado: 01-17-25
while this book is incredibly well written it is not very digestible for the average listener. It's flowery language and expansive vocabulary can often be confusing if you're not paying the upmost attention to the speaker. This is likely a much better listen/read if you own the physical copy and can follow along. Outside of that, it was insightful and opened up many avenues for new reads through it's frequent mention of the texts that informed and inspired the book.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was the final famous Stoic philosopher of the ancient world. The Meditations, his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves stories of Marcus’s life from the Roman histories together with explanations of Stoicism—its philosophy and its psychology—to enlighten today’s listeners. He discusses Stoic techniques for coping with everyday problems, from irrational fears and bad habits to anger, pain, and illness.

Historia
What is masculinity? Ask ten men and you'll get ten vague, conflicting answers. Unlike any book of its kind, The Way of Men offers a simple, straightforward answer - without getting bogged down in religion, morality, or politics. It's a guide for understanding who men have been and the challenges men face today. The Way of Men captures the silent, stifling rage of men everywhere who find themselves at odds with the overregulated, overcivilized, politically correct modern world.

Good, but dated
Revisado: 12-01-22
I really liked the overall message of the book, but his views and opinions on homosexuality and masculinity basically being unable to coexist in the same person while also portraying bonds with gay men as potentially problematic for groups of men I thought were out of touch.

Xenophon was a friend of Socrates, and yet his concise memories of the iconic philosopher have lived under the shadow of the more voluminous accounts by Plato. Yet Xenophon’s two works are, in many ways, more entertaining and more accessible, and they present a different view of the man who embodies a clear mind, temperate, ethical living, sharp intellect and humour.

I'm not nearly smart enough to be able to comprehend this fully on the first listen, and so I assume most others won't either. listen, and then listen again. There's lots of wisdom, but it can be difficult to extrapolate.

The Republic poses questions that endure: What is justice? What form of community fosters the best possible life for human beings? What is the nature and destiny of the soul? What form of education provides the best leaders for a good republic? What are the various forms of poetry and the other arts, and which ones should be fostered and which ones should be discouraged? How does knowing differ from believing?

I struggled greatly to finish this book. While it is incredibly thought provoking, it's also painfully tedious. If you can focus better than a 22 year old with ADHD you may love it, but it was almost unbearable for me to listen to.

Generally good, but uses a lot of shady tactics
Revisado: 03-30-22
I didn't finish this book. My BS radar was going off while listening to the first few chapters, and upon further investigation I found out why. This book continuously misrepresents studies to sway your opinion towards a plant based diet while demonizing meat as a whole. And it's just not true. I recommend reading reviews of the book from credible websites and you'll get a plethora of examples verifying my claim.

Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

inspiring, but not the best advice.
Revisado: 12-02-21
His story of triumph in the face of adversity is inspiring, but his mindset and methodology while potentially effective is impractical and at times dangerous to mental and physical health.
