The lives and the deaths.
Revisado: 12-18-24
Some have said that the descriptive writing in brutal detail is too much. I disagree. The very real details of the struggle of these loved/hated characters is what makes this series so engrossing and believable. Great series!

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. very predictable and follow up in the series are completely unrelated to original characters.
Revisado: 10-19-24
Complete sham. this book is okay as a stand alone but had the potential to be a banger as a series. The author on the other hand seems to have shot his wad on this book (Meh) and even with leaving the door open, no closer at the end, has billed unrelated stories as the next in the series! This deliberate misdirection made to drive sales pisses me me off! I will forever stay away from any of Robinsons books and will urge all of my fellow book nerds to do the same!

Just F-ing wow!
Revisado: 08-01-24
No spoilers. This book was was nothing short of greatness. The plot, albeit not completely original had an original take. The characters were well fleshed out and appropriately likeable/despised. I've read 2 to 3 Scify books a week for more years than, well lots of years and this book, start of a hopefully equally engrossing series, has climbed the charts of my top ten to mingle with the likes of Extinction, Wool, Altered Carbon, Expeditionary force and Hell Divers, not in any particular order. Rest assured, If you are a Scify fan that enjoys time displacement, mystery, accurate battles and characters you care about then you should buy this book. Note: R. C. Bray continues to be the man for all great book narrations.

Ranger Quinn thought that morning would be like so many others. A hangover, a day off before going back to work keeping the lower levels of Zion City safe from itself. But a crime so horrific, so brutal in its execution, turns those mundane expectations around. An investigation into the death of a senior leader in their underground utopia safe from the harsh radioactive wastelands beyond their walls forces Quinn beyond that safety and into the world outside.

great story telling of a unique apocalyptic tail.
Revisado: 06-21-24
Truth: I'm at the end of book five of this 1-6 series. That being said, the story is well fleshed out for the characters and thier environments. Book 5 changes from a first person past narrative to one of pure narration. The change was jarring at first, the first 2 pages, as I was used to the personal past perspective by the lead character. It rapidly became apparent as to why in book 5 and I adapted as rapidly as the author and became engrossed once more.
Great unique writing for a post apocalyptic senerio and as for narration, not the caliber of the great RC Brey but very competent in his reading.

1 hour and 54 minutes into it
Revisado: 05-28-24
I'm 1 hour and 54 minutes into the book and am compelled to rebut the reviews of "slow at first". Those reviews don't appreciate the character building that took place that was necessary for thier appreciation of the protagonist, his reasoning, his purpose and why he became the protagonist. I've stopped here to make this review as I understand the world building and character development sets the stage for the readers acceptance of what comes later. All is superb and should not be discounted by those who thoroughly enjoyed the writing while simultaneously discounting the reason it was so enjoyable.
I'll include more after I eagerly finish the book.

This has been an enjoyable series. Is it the literary genius of Hugh Howey or Nicholas Sansberry Smith? No. However, it is a good story line with good action and well fleshed out characters.
