No one like Wills writing on political discourse today, and we are poorer for it.

One of the most erudite and prescient books on politics I have ever (heard) read. And more relevant than ever.

Presents information about the period and connection to today in a novel way, bridging gap between historical fact and contemporary practices. The professor’s willingness to advance theories that some might see as controversial also serves as a nice counterweight to lecturers who play it safe or refuse to take on outdated academic orthodoxies.

It’s pretty informative and decently structured, but the treatment of Napoleon was so one-dimensional and inflected with such bitterness, blemished by outdated stereotypes, that it seriously makes me question the author’s honesty and bias regarding his treatment of other subjects on which I am less well read.

I have listened to about 20% of this audiobook and am completely lost, and say this as someone very familiar with Renaissance/early modern history and philosophy and the major players - the Medics, all those other Florentines like Machiavelli and Savonarola, the various popes and councils, Luther and Calvin, Hapsburg tensions with France and the Papacy, etc. I was hoping this book would fill in gaps in my knowledge. But there’s, like, no coherent narrative at all. Just a bunch of loosely organized facts thrown at you. Maybe it makes for a good textbook, but a painful listen.
