Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Need to Go Ask My Grandparents A Few Questions...
Revisado: 09-06-16
Great book. Weird ending. Guess I'm going to go crank up the Springsteen and fight the man in my overalls now.
Why the hell didn't we read this in school? I can't just be reading this after 26 years!

Historia
FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tale of horror, Dreams in the Witch House. Walter Gilman rents a room in a house that the locals shun. They call it the Witch House because of the strange lights seen late at night. Walter thinks there's something more to it than just lights. He has mathematical occult research to carry out, and the angles of the walls in the Witch House suit his dubious needs.

Oh, Fated Horror Story Protagonist...
Revisado: 09-06-16
This is one of my very favorite Lovecraft stories, because while it fiddles with some of his more common themes (dream realities, anthropomorphic beasties, the occult, etc.), it delves a little more darkly into details such as [SPOILER] infanticide and rats eating peoples' hearts out. The only thing I have to whine about here is the reader-- who gave a very satisfying performance by his abilities no doubt (and I'm sure he's a swell guy), but I just wish he had an American accent, given the writer of the story and the setting. Just because it's classic macabre doesn't mean it has to be in an English accent, right? Poe was from the Mason-Dixon line, and Lovecraft was a Yankee. Come on, represent mo-fo. 'Merica!

Precede with Mere Christianity
Revisado: 07-29-16
This was, in my opinion, a very satisfactory supplement after reading Mere Christianity by the same author. I would however advise that readers follow my same order when reading the two, especially non-Christians, for the sake of helpful (although certainly not absolutely necessary) background. As always with Lewis however, the readership can be as diverse or secular as you please, and they still would no doubt appreciate this as a work of satisfyingly thorough philosophy if not also divine meditation on a very human level of humility.

Historia
In his perceptive and moving depiction of Ivan Ilych, a worldly careerist facing his own mortality in the midst of a self-absorbed family and indifferent colleagues, Tolstoy provides one of literature's greatest and most memorable reflections on the meaning of the good life and on life as preparation for death.

Welp, I Guess I'll Go Ponder Now
Revisado: 06-30-16
Being completely new to Tolstoy, I was blown away by this story, and was left feeling thoroughly understood by its writer-- and yet more misunderstanding of myself than ever before. I found it to be a fantastic supplement after recently finishing Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis; as I wrote when reviewing that title, I would recommend this book highly to my fellow followers of Christ, even more highly to those who do not follow Him, and most highly of all to those on the fence about the whole thing.

Historia
One of the most popular and beloved introductions to the concept of faith ever written, Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide. This audiobook brings together C. S. Lewis' legendary radio broadcasts during the war years, in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times."

An Essential for All Thought
Revisado: 06-10-16
Whether you consider yourself a Christian or you do not, this book is vital for all thinking persons who wish to grow in some way or another-- initially in thorough thought, primarily in thorough spirit. I would highly recommend this to any members of my church or Christian friends, would recommend it even more strongly to those who find themselves on the fence, and would recommend it desperately to those with absolutely no interest in the whole thing whatsoever.
