Informative and accessible, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew has a unique structure: Acho asks questions and Tishby answers them with deeply personal, historical, and political responses. This book will enable anyone to explain—and identify—what Jewish hatred looks like. It is a much-needed lexicon for this fraught moment in Jewish history.

It starts with a conversation
Revisado: 11-29-24
This book is a conversation between a compassionate and open-minded man who is seemingly unaware of his ingrained antisemitic beliefs and a secular Jewish woman who was born in Israel. I wish they had gone deeper into the relatively recent division between the Black and Jewish communities and the politics of how that evolved. Noa called Emmanuel out on several points but then they moved on and I wanted to hear his response… did she change his mind? I wonder how much was shared offline? But it’s a conversation and that’s a start.

Historia
Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, the “Joyful Vegan,” has guided countless individuals through the process of becoming vegan. In The Joyful Vegan, she shares her insights into why some people stay vegan and others don’t. Understanding that the food is the easy part of being vegan, Colleen turns her attention to what she believes is the most challenging - dealing with the social, cultural, and emotional aspects: being asked to defend your eating choices, living with the awareness of animal suffering, feeling the pressure to be perfect, and experiencing guilt, remorse, and anger.

Lifelong vegan and vegetarian
Revisado: 10-01-20
Colleen is an excellent narrator but her philosophy is a bit single-sided. I was raised vegan and vegetarian-in a “meat free” household and do think we’re working towards a more compassionate future - but I don’t think hunters and sustainable farmers feel such a sense of shame as the author describes. I think most are doing what they can.

Heartfelt story of a mother
Revisado: 09-30-20
This really was a beautiful, rich, and heartfelt story. I think most people know of Dierdre through her son Alex but she has her own story to tell, and the hard work, will power, and strength she shares in this book is worth every minute.

Spiritual without religion
Revisado: 08-10-20
A lovely book to listen to with many ideas that seem Buddhist or spiritual-but without being religious (aside from some references to Jesus). An enjoyable, light-hearted listen that still has a lot of depth.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.
