I really wanted to love this
Revisado: 10-25-24
As a long time fan of the podcast, I’m disappointed that I didn’t love this book.
In my opinion, the characters lacked depth and the plot wasn’t as compelling as I think it could have been. The twists and losses that happen in the story didn’t pack the punch I think they could have. Overall, this book didn’t feel like it was quite ready, but it was close. I’ll always be a supporter of the author and the podcast, even if this isn’t her best work.
Is this book worth your time? Yes, but barely.
Despite my criticisms and complaints, I’m excited for the next book. I think she’s set up something that could be really gripping and satisfying.

Historia
For a man who insisted that life on the public stage was not what he had in mind, Thomas Jefferson certainly spent a great deal of time in the spotlight. Historian Joseph J. Ellis sifts the facts shrewdly from the legends and the rumors, treading a path between vilification and hero worship in order to formulate a plausible portrait of the man who still today "hover[s] over the political scene like one of those dirigibles cruising above a crowded football stadium, flashing words of inspiration to both teams".

A good portrait of Jefferson’s character
Revisado: 04-08-24
The book does a good job displaying the contradictions and complexities of Jefferson, and while the Sally Hemings content hasn’t aged well, it does serve as another example of how elusive and contradictory Jefferson could be.

Historia
This comprehensive series of 84 lectures features three award-winning historians sharing their insights into this nation's past-from the European settlement and the Revolutionary War through the Civil War, 19th-century industrialization, two world wars, and the present day. These lectures give you the opportunity to grasp the different aspects of our past that combine to make us distinctly American, and to gain the knowledge so essential to recognizing not only what makes this country such a noteworthy part of world history, but the varying degrees to which it has lived up to its ideals.

Fantastic & comprehensive historical narrative
Revisado: 07-10-23
These lectures are a great high-level narrative of US history. All three professors do an excellent job distilling the complexities and nuances of American history into digestible 30-40 minute lectures.

Historia
On the morning of June 1, 1921, a white mob numbering in the thousands marched across the railroad tracks dividing black from white in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and obliterated a black community then celebrated as one of America's most prosperous. The Burning will recreate the town of Greenwood at the height of its prosperity, explore the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between its black residents and neighboring Tulsa's white population, narrate events leading up to and including Greenwood's annihilation, and document the subsequent silence that surrounded the tragedy.

This book was incredibly eye opening and heart wrenching. I definitely cried while listening to this book. Only by understanding the past can we hope to make a better future, I believe that this book is an important part of understanding the past.

Historia
The Dynize have unlocked the Landfall Godstone, and Michel Bravis is tasked with returning to Greenfire Depths to do whatever he can to prevent them from using its power: from sewing dissension among the enemy ranks to rallying the Palo population. Ben Styke's invasion of Dynize is curtailed when a storm scatters his fleet. Coming ashore with just 20 lancers, he is forced to rely on brains rather than brawn - gaining new allies in a strange land on the cusp of its own internal violence.

Worth your time.
Revisado: 03-22-20
In a perfect world, Christian Rodska would have been able to narrate this book like he had the others. John Telfer still did a good job. Overall I don’t think this book was quite as good as the other two in this series but it’s still worth your time.
