Historia
It's not easy being the only human at the Community of Species Government - and especially not when you're the rescue case. Two years ago, I was planning to go to college, have a wild time, then settle into a normal life. Instead, I was kidnapped, spent months being a test subject, was in hiding for nearly a year, and then found out that my whole existence is a science experiment conducted by the bad guys. It's definitely time to reassess.

No one beats Joel Leslie
Revisado: 04-02-22
Well this is a tough one. Usually a book rating is easy for me to place and I rarely need to quantify it with a .5 but for the first time in forever I'm being forced to do so.
Story -3.5
Performance- 5
I'll go with performance first because it really can't be any simpler. Joel Leslie is a book narrating God! The energy and emotions he puts into his performances is just perfect and his delivery of snarky or funny lines is, as always, spot on. Just... maybe don't listen to a sex scene when there's a possibility of others hearing because yeah, that enthusiasm. *cough* Don't ask me why I bring it up. 😳😂
Unfortunately on the story side of things I gotta say I'm not quite as impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's a great story and it had me laughing in places until my stomach hurt. But I've got to be a little harsher than normal because of 2 particular points.
1) I agree with a couple others here who commented that the ending just feels rushed. It really just feels like the author maybe saw the length and said "Oh shoot I gotta stop writing!" or something. I've nothing against HFN's but this one left me feeling completely unsatisfied. Even though we all know it will be an HEA ultimately.
2) My second point is that for the first half of the book Noah just drives me nuts with all his bitching and moaning about the community members around him. I get it, he's been traumatized, barely escaped with his life, everything he knew about himself turned out to be a lie and there's a ton of anger and hurt to work through. But the fact that he has to keep reminding himself not to lash out at people because they did actually save him and truly want him safe and happy just rubs me the wrong way. At least he gets himself under control after a bit.
So in the end, while I enjoyed the story i think it's Joel's performance that saved it for me in the long run. Not sure how I'd have responded if I'd just read the book.

Grey Ackles: The Soul Weaver feels useless. A burden endangering his brothers. The last battle with the pestilents cost Grey his sight and powers. Cort Newton: There is some really weird stuff going on at that house. Spell books, guns, and a giraffe in the backyard? But no matter how strange it gets, Cort is not going to leave the grumpy writer. Adjusting to sudden blindness is hard for everyone, but Grey clearly has deeper reason for needing his vision back at any cost. Cort just wished Grey would confide in him.

Great story but...
Revisado: 01-29-22
Unfortunately as much as I liked reading this one in book form, the audio was a lot less enjoyable. I really don't get the multiple narrator thing. They each have their own interpretations of the different characters and it gets really hard to determine who is speaking each time the narrator changes. I'm really hoping they switch back to just Kirt Graves for the next book.

Probably a great story in reality but I just couldn't get into it with the way the narrator performed. There was no real feeling of emotion. Every scene felt the same and it was particularly frustrating during times when you knew there should have been a real sense of urgency, fear, or passion.

Historia
Seneca is the complete package. He's smart, sexy, and confident, much to Chevy's annoyance. They've worked with each other for two years, and even though Chevy might secretly find his partner charming and attractive, playful harassment is all they have. Chevy was born with a unique gift that allows him to go into the memories of others. As detective, he uses this ability to find peace for victims who have been hurt or attacked. But neither Chevy nor Seneca are prepared when they are asked to go into the mind of a serial killer in hopes of finding survivors.

Revisado: 01-09-21
Boy do I really appreciate the snark and comedy between the 2 main characters! And also I'm very glad I didn't try to listen to this at night in the dark! It's an awesome story made even better with Joel Leslie's performance. I absolutely couldn't stop listening, but it was intense too. I'm not normally a psychological thriller kind of person but I've been trying to expand my horizons, and I honestly feel this was a good choice for doing so. I'll definitely be listening to it again.

I really enjoyed this story when I read it but man, the voice the narrator gave Toby just gets on my nerves, literally. It's like nails on a chalkboard. *shudders*
If it weren't for that high pitched whiney voice it would have been a mostly enjoyable listen, but I just can't get past it.
I'm really hoping either the narrator does a better job in book 2 or they replace him completely.

Loved it
Revisado: 06-20-20
What else is there to say really? The BHS series is one of my all-time favourites and it's so great to see Isaac finally step out of Angel's shadow and begin to find himself.
And of course Joel Leslie's performance is absolutely amazing, but that's exactly what I've come to expect from him. He and Sheena J Himes together make an awesome pair and really give life to the world of Angel and Isaac.
Now I must wait patiently, or perhaps not so patiently, for Daniel and Ruarí's book.

good one!
Revisado: 06-10-20
I've said before that I love this series despite all the demon spawn... I mean kids present in it, and I still stand by that. It's so refreshing to see how Alois and Sebastian's mating plays out. The insta attraction is there but the forced separation makes the relationship development so much more real.
I also love how they begin to bring back a little of the culture of a long dead race. even if it's just a tiny bit. As an archaeology and history nut it would be a dream come true to be able to do this with some of earth's ancient populations.

It was great to see these 2 finally get to tell their story. They really are cute together, and I enjoyed seeing Ailin finally start to open up to Julius. But dammit Michele that Cliffhanger!!! With all migraines I find reading for any length of time difficult so I can't wait for the next one to make it to audio.
Kenneth Obi really does a great job of bringing these guys to life, though I'll admit he kept wobbling a bit on Ailin this time. Not enough to disrupt my enjoyment however.

Vampires slaughtered my family. No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice. But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik. Tall, dark, and mind-numbingly sexy. But he’s also shy, protective, and adorably eccentric. Oh God, I should have never agreed to betray him. Hopefully, it's not too late to fix my mistake before I lose more people I love.

So happy to see this on Audio! I loved the book when I first read it, and with Kenneth Obi narrating it's even better. Marcus is such a steady rock for his slightly eccentric brothers and it's good to see him end up with a sweet but not pushover guy like Ethan.
I love the way the brothers are all so very different but a commitment to family and music ties them all together even though it's a bit of a bittersweet reminder of the past.
can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
