After the Happily Ever After
Revisado: 06-02-22
What happens 10 years after the happily ever after? When you are Justin St. Briac, you are not quite ready to come to terms to being nearly <gasp> sixty. You still adore your wife, but you can’t believe your children no longer idolize you as they used to. There is still adventure waiting around the corner, non? Justin has become what is often called a silver fox. An older hero who’s still “got it.” Justin puts up the good fight against his fear of aging and becoming settled. He’s still a corsair, is he not? But he soon realizes that some things do change and going forward can be just as exciting as reliving the past.
Mouette Raveneau St. Briac has a chance to restore her reputation in London and help her son. But will Justin be willing to join her to help? Or will his desire for adventure put him at cross-purposes with his lovely wife? Going back to London does not provide the satisfaction that Mouette had hoped. And she soon discovers that things were not always what they seemed.
HER IMPOSSIBLE HUSBAND can stand alone, but it becomes so much richer when you know the background that helped shaped the characters and you have greater satisfaction watching their growth. There are threads of the story that has appeared in several previous books, including THE SECRET OF LOVE, SURRENDER THE STARS, and of course, HIS MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE. These threads include a missing painting and more background on Mouette’s first marriage. And a Raveneau book would not be complete without a visit from the couple that started it all, André and Devon, from SILVER STORM. (Who am I kidding, you will want to read all of the Rakes and Rebels: Raveneau books. Do it.)
I loved the science cameos, including Mary Anning and Charles Darwin (off-stage). And as always, there is a strong sense of time and place when she describes picturesque Cornwall and all of her descriptions.
I very much enjoyed revisiting Justin and Mouette to see how they have gotten along over the years. It was fun to see the next generation, as well. Can’t wait to see if, perhaps some of André and Devon’s grandchildren will get their own HEA. Let’s hear it for the older heroes & heroines. They do, in fact, still got it.
Because I’ve listened to him narrate HIS MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE, as I was reading HER IMPOSSIBLE HUSBAND, I could hear the outstanding Tim Campbell narrate the voices in my head. Therefore, I was thrilled to finally get to enjoy the audio version actually narrated by the outstanding Tim Campbell. His voice and various accents helps to draw you into the story and bring the characters to life, including Justin and Mouette’s children, who are now older. As I always say, Cynthia Wright’s storytelling paired with Tim Campbell’s narration are both engaging and satisfying and I can’t wait to hear what’s next on the horizon.

Another Delightful Wright/Campbell Pairing!
Revisado: 03-14-21
Once again, fans of medieval romance will delight in Cynthia Wright’s latest foray into 16th century Scotland, where passion and love abound.
Lennox MacLeod has never felt part of his clan. He doesn’t really look like anyone in his family, he considers himself more of an artist than a Highlander, and his grandfather, chief of Clan MacLeod, doesn’t seem to fully accept him. Despite feeling this way, Lennox loves his family. One day, while helping his sister prepare for travel, he unwittingly uncovers a shocking family secret. Hoping to learn more, he sets out on a quest to discover his true parentage.
Nora Brodie is an artistic woman trying to make her mark in a man’s world. Learning skills from her father, Nora’s dream is to become a master weaver, creating tapestries for royalty. As a woman, this dream is difficult, if not impossible to achieve. Nora and her father travel to Sterling Castle where she hopes that a demonstration of her skills will allow her to attain her dreams. Unfortunately, a chance encounter ruins all of Nora’s prospects and she is determined to escape.
Nora persuades kindhearted Lennox to take her with him on his journey and so their adventure begins. Traveling through Scotland and England, both are determined in their individual quests but they soon discover a passion for each other along the way.
Lennox is the 3rd MacLeod sibling from the Isle of Skye. His brother Ciaran and sister Fiona both try to convince Lennox that family bonds are strong, no matter what blood travels through their veins. But Lennox is resolute and feels the need to find answers he seeks.
As one can expect from a Cynthia Wright book, the details of medieval Scotland and London are well depicted, as are the courts of James V and Henry VIII. Her descriptions of food, clothing, and the settings are spot on. In addition, Wright describes the art of tapestry making in the 16 century. This is a topic that I knew nothing about, but delighted in the descriptions of the looms, bobbins, and cartoons. These cartoons are not what you would expect them to be.
I highly recommend visiting Cynthia Wright’s Pinterest boards, including her latest for Quest of the Highlander. She includes pictures of historical figures, clothing, and castles of the time. Also included are pictures of the Stirling head medallions, galleys, and tapestries.
QUEST OF THE HIGHLANDER is a strong addition to the Crowns and Kilts series. One of my favorite things about Cynthia Wright is how her books are all interconnected. While it can stand alone, knowing the back story of the MacLeods adds to the enjoyment. New readers can go back and learn about the MacLeod siblings in Abducted at the Altar and Return of the Lost Bride. There are also cameos from Andrew, the Duke of Aylesbury, and Micheline from OF ONE HEART. Even Andrew’s sister Cicely tries to lend a hand. (And if you are really paying attention, the St. Briac family eventually winds up in America with the Beauvisages and one of the Duke of Aylesworth’s descendants is in THE DUKE & THE COWGIRL, in the Rogues Go West series.)
I was delighted to listen to Tim Campbell’s narration of QUEST OF THE HIGHLANDER and he did not disappoint. Tim’s ability to bring a multitude of characters to life, including a variety of accents (Scottish, French, British), allows the listener to become immersed in each character as you are drawn into the story. Campbell is truly a master at his craft and paired with Cynthia Wright’s words, the story is engaging, satisfying, and an absolute listening pleasure.

A Renaissance Tale of Intrigue, Passion, & Love
Revisado: 10-25-20
OF ONE HEART, formerly known as A BATTLE FOR LOVE, is the second book in Cynthia Wright's Crowns and Kilts series. While it does stand alone, Aimée and Thomas from YOU AND NO OTHER are secondary characters, with Aimée being Michelene Tevoulère's best friend.
Young widow Michelene Tevoulère and rogue Andrew Weston, Earl of Sandhurst and future Duke of Aylesworth, become pawns of the French and English courts. Anne d'Heilly, long-time mistress of King François, wants to get rid of Michelene and hatches a plan with King Henry VIII to marry her off to the Earl of Sandhurst. Neither pawn is keen on the plan at first. A devastating reality, secret identities, court intrigues and finally love push Michelene and Andrew together and pull them apart.
Renaissance France and England are not areas that I am strong on history, but Cynthia Wright's details of time and place and her descriptions of the food and clothing of the time make the courts of François I and Henry VIII come alive. I was fascinated to learn that Anne d'Heilly was a real person and that King Henry VIII DID really play tennis at his court [pun intended].
I thoroughly enjoyed Michelene and Andrew's story and the ties to YOU AND NO OTHER. Now that the original Renaissance Rogues series has expanded to Crowns and Kilts as characters make their way over to Scotland, we will meet up with these characters. Michelene and Andrew are expected to make an appearance in book 5, QUEST OF THE HIGHLANDER. (You can also get a peek and one of the Duke of Aylesworth’s descendants in THE DUKE & THE COWGIRL, in the Rogues Go West series.)
I was very excited to listen to Tim Campbell’s narration of OF ONE HEART. His ability to bring a multitude of characters to life adds so much depth. I am taken back in time to the courts of François I and Henry VIII, becoming totally immersed in the story. Campbell is truly a master at his craft with excellent source material. Cynthia Wright’s words paired with Tim Campbell’s narration creates results that are both engaging and satisfying and I cannot resist. (Nor should you!)

Darkly handsome Ciaran MacLeod revels in his life as a Highland warrior. He spends his days training with his comrades at Duntulm Castle on the far cliffs of the Isle of Skye, and takes his pick of smitten lasses. However, Ciaran harbors a secret, passed down from his dead mother, that has caused him to become deeply suspicious of love. He’s grateful he doesn’t have to worry about taking a wife, for the castle is efficiently run by Violette, a plain young Frenchwoman who covers her head with a gable hood and reveals nothing of her own past.

Get Lost in Return of the Lost Bride
Revisado: 10-19-19
I was excited to read Ciaran and Violette’s story in the second installment of the Brides of Skye. Set against the backdrop of medieval Scotland and France, The Return of the Lost Bride is a story of unexpected love, loss, and secrets revealed. Highland warrior Ciaran MacLeod enjoys the ladies but is suspicious of love. Family is everything and he will do whatever it takes to protect his family home, Duntulm Castle. Violette Pasquiére came from France to serve Ciaran’s sister, but has become the caretaker of the family and castle. They are often at odds, but a past kiss provided unexpected sparks.
Violette is filled with secrets, disguising her looks and her true identity. Ciaran holds a family secret of his own. While Ciaran will do anything for Clan MacLeod, what he won’t do is be forced into an arranged marriage, even if he does not believe in love. To avoid what he sees as the bigger disaster, he claims a fake betrothal to Violette based on love. Forced to go through with the marriage, despite the disapproval of his family, Ciaran and Violette try to make the best of it. Unfortunately, as they get closer, events threaten to separate them.
Return of the Lost Bride does not disappoint. Fiona and Cristophe make cameos as do Thomas and Aimee St. Briac. I was pulled into the story and enjoyed Wright’s attention to detail and historical accuracy. I appreciated her descriptions of food, clothing, and the settings. Her supporting cast of real historical figures also ring true. I highly recommend visiting Cynthia Wright’s Pinterest boards, including her latest for The Return of the Lost Bride. She includes pictures of historical figures, clothing, and castles of the time. Also included are pictures of Dougal and Violette’s lute.
While the book stands alone, one of my favorite things about Cynthia Wright is how her books are all interconnected. New readers who enjoyed The Return of the Lost Bride can go back and pick up Abducted at the Altar for Fiona and Christophe’s story. They can also check out You and No Other and Of One Heart to learn more of the St. Briacs.
Fans of historical fiction will delight in Cynthia Wright’s latest foray into medieval Scotland, where passion and love abound.
I know that I am doubly lucky when a new Cynthia Wright books comes out because not only can I get lost in her wonderful storytelling, but I know that soon I will be able to totally immerse myself in the story as narrated by the incomparable Tim Campbell. His ability to bring a multitude of characters to life adds so much depth. I am taken back in time to Scotland and Duntulm Castle. With Cynthia Wright’s words paired with Tim Campbell’s narration the results are both engaging and satisfying and I cannot resist. (Nor should you!) I will continue to drop my hints in the hope that Tim Campbell will narrate more of Cynthia Wright’s books, such as SILVER STORM! The taste we had of Andre Raveneau in SPRING FIRES, proves that it will be worth the wait!

Captivating Start to New Scottish Series
Revisado: 11-24-18
I am always excited to hear of a new Cynthia Wright book. And this would be the first in a new series, The Brides of Skye, set in Scotland! Never fear, Beauvisage fans, there are still ties to the beloved St. Briac family.
Set in 1538, we meet Fiona MacLeod who has spent all of her life on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. She longs to explore the world, beyond the pages of her books, but duty keeps her at her mother’s sickbed, running the home for her warrior father and brothers. On her deathbed, Eleanor extracts a promise from her husband, Magnus...let Fiona have a chance to experience the royal court at Falkland Palace. Magnus, devastated by his wife’s death, carries out her request. But he knows that nothing will come of the visit, because Magnus has arranged for Fiona to be married to Ramsay MacAskills, a move that will help settle the tension between the two clans. Unfortunately, Fiona is very uncomfortable with the match, but fears she has no choice.
Over in France, Christophe de St. Briac, having studied with Michelangelo, loves his work as an architect. However, he is not happy when he is pressured by his brother Thomas and King François I to help renovate Falkland Palace, where the King’s goddaughter, Mary of Guise, will live after marrying King James of Scotland. Christophe is reluctant, but persuaded after the promise of a renovation of a lifetime is made.
At Falkland Palace, Fiona and Christophe meet and slowly (and somewhat reluctantly) become enamored of each other. Fiona is hoping for a chance to enjoy her freedom before she is forced to be a dutiful daughter by marrying a man she does not like. Christophe does not want any changes to the life he already enjoys and is anxious to return to France to embark on a renovation of a lifetime. And yet, the feisty Fiona intrigues him. But their path is not an easy one, as outside forces conspire to keep them apart forever.
I thoroughly enjoyed Wright’s latest entry in the St. Briac saga. The reader is reacquainted with old friends as Christophe makes his way from France to Falkland Court in Scotland. For me, as a reader (and librarian), a successful historical fiction/romance book pulls me into the time period and makes me want more. Abducted at the Altar does just that. As always, Wright’s attention to detail and historical accuracy are spot on. I appreciated her descriptions of food, clothing, and the settings. I am excited to read more about Scotland. Her supporting cast of real historical figures also ring true.
Fans of Cynthia Wright will delight in her newest book, savoring the medieval romance and the new characters that appear, just knowing that they will quite likely show up again. After all, this is the first in a series. New readers can also enjoy Abducted at the Altar as a stand-alone book, but will want more. Luckily for them, they can go back to You and No Other and Of One Heart to learn more of the St. Briacs. I highly recommend visiting Cynthia Wright’s Pinterest boards, where you can see pictures of historical figures, clothing, and castles of the time. And Erik.
I was eagerly awaiting the audio version of ABDUCTED AT THE ALTAR, because Tim Campbell adds so much depth to the story. As the story progresses, he is able to bring a multitude of characters to life, showing off his range of voices. Once again, Cynthia Wright’s storytelling paired with Tim Campbell’s narration are both engaging and satisfying and I cannot resist Tim Campbell reading Cynthia Wright’s books. I am hoping that he will narrate more of her books, such as SILVER STORM...hint hint!

Wright/Campbell Do Not Disappoint!
Revisado: 08-03-18
SPRING FIRES always holds a special place in my heart because it was the first book I read by Cynthia Wright, found one day on my aunt's bookshelf 25+ years ago. I still haven't given it back to her.
Set in post-Revolutionary War America, I was enchanted by the story of Nicholai Beauvisage, back in Philadelphia after spending 10 years in France, and Lisette Hahn, independent woman who runs the local coffee house in Philadelphia. Tragedy first throws them together, then stubbornness pulls them apart. Nicholai and Lisette get off to a bumpy start, but find that they care for each other more than they want to admit and they travel the rocky road to romance with the help of friends and family.
Ms. Wright does an outstanding job of weaving the history of the time, with famous figures showing up as secondary characters. Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and their in-fighting over the war in France gets several mentions and President George Washington has a cameo. (On a re-read, my inner HAMILTON fan-girl gave many cheers.) Far from detracting to the story, these historical mentions add favor and provide context for the action.
Also providing cameos are the heroes/heroines from the previous RAKES AND REBELS books: Alec & Caroline (CAROLINE), Lion & Meagan (TOUCH THE SUN), and even Andre and Devon (SILVER STORM). They provide much meddling into Nicholai and Lisette's story. That being said, SPRING FIRES does stand alone. The first time I read it, I did not have the background of the other stories, but was able to glean enough from the book that I had no problem following the plot.
This is a book I have on my keeper shelf and have also bought in ebook form. When I do re-read it every few years, I am sure to read all of the Rakes and Rebels books in order, because it is more fun to follow the families, friends and their intertwining lives as they happen.
As a librarian, I don't always purchase my books, but Cynthia Wright is on my "must buy" list, so when a new title comes out, I am sure to purchase it. She is also one of the top authors I recommend to people looking for historical romances.
Because of my love for SPRING FIRES (and Tim Campbell’s narration), I was thrilled to listen to him perform SPRING FIRES. In this book, there were many characters from many locations, providing Campbell ample opportunity to show off his range of voices. As a listener, you are drawn into the story through him many voices, all distinct. Plus, I got to hear Andre Raveneau...fans self. As I’ve noted before, Cynthia Wright’s storytelling paired with Tim Campbell’s narration are both engaging and satisfying and I cannot resist Tim Campbell reading Cynthia Wright’s books. I am hoping that he will narrate more of her books, such as SILVER STORM...hint hint!

Another Delightful Wright/Campbell Pairing!
Revisado: 12-20-17
I first met Cynthia Wright's NATALYA in my trade paperback copy, which I was very excited about because I was able to get a matching copy of her mother's story, CAROLINE. (These little details are very important to us obsessive readers.) I then got to revisit Natalya Beauvisage in her spiffy new ebook format as HER DANGEROUS VISCOUNT. And now I was able to pair another reread of the story with a listen to the eaudio format.
Twenty-six year-old Natalya, daughter of Alec and Caro Beauvisage, has been living in France for the past six years as an authoress in her Uncle Nicholai's Chateau du Soleil. While she loves France and loves writing, she is starting to miss her family and home in Philadelphia. Grey St. James has escaped from prison and makes his way to Chateau du Soleil for assistance in getting back to England. Since Grey held Natalya at knife point during their first meeting, needless to say she is not fond of him. But it seems that they can help each other get to England and then go on to Philadelphia.
As to be expected, Cynthia Wright blends humor and meticulous details into the story. This historical period is the War of 1812/Napoleonic Wars and the reader gets a strong feeling of time and place. Whether it is your first read/listen or your fifth, HER DANGEROUS VISCOUNT is an engrossing story, giving you a chance to revisit old friends from other Rakes and Rebels books and cheer on Natalya and Grey.
Cynthia Wright’s storytelling paired with Tim Campbell’s narration are both engaging and satisfying. I now find that I cannot resist Tim Campbell reading Cynthia Wright’s books. To say I love his voice would not be accurate. The correct version of that sentence is that I love his voiceS. Campbell makes each character very distinct and gives him/her their own voice. Several times I had to remind myself that it was only one narrator! As a librarian, I am often helping customers who will actually ask for audiobooks by the narrator as opposed to the author and are willing to listen to anything that narrator reads. I now put Tim Campbell in that category. And when he is reading a book by one of my favorite authors, it is a no-brainer—a must-listen!

Enchanting in Story and Narration
Revisado: 12-07-17
At long last comes Cynthia Wright’s THE MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE, book 5 of RAKES AND REBELS: THE RAVENEAU FAMILY. The story of Justin St. Briac and Mouette Raveneau Brandreth takes place 10 years after THE SECRET OF LOVE. Justin is called to Cornwall to see his dying mother who wrings a promise from him that he will marry before she dies. Justin decides that he will find a make-believe bride to keep his mother happy and then sail back to France to continue his piratical ways.
Mouette, four years a widow, is determined to never marry after the shoddy treatment of her husband. Raising her two sons alone is hard, especially when she is still trying to get out of debt. All seems hopeless until her friend Isabella St. Briac comes to visit and offers a respite at her home in Cornwall.
The last time Justin and Mouette met, sparks flew. Now they must work together to fulfill his mother’s dying wish, while not losing their hearts.
Mouette and Justin have made appearances in many of Wright’s books and it was well worth the wait to read their story. A unique feature of HMBB is that both Justin and Mouette are older than Wright’s typical romance couple. Justin is eight and forty and Mouette is six and thirty. I thoroughly enjoyed their acknowledgment of their ages, the worries and self-doubt that often accompany that acknowledgment, and the strength that comes from knowing age does not matter.
While HIS MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE can stand alone, I highly recommend reading the other Raveneau books (especially the Raveneaus in Cornwall books) first. It is then that you totally feel immersed in the story and the families. While there were not cameos from historical figures, which often happen in Wright’s books, there is a strong sense of time and place when she describes picturesque Cornwall.
I have been long awaiting the arrival of THE MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE, by Cynthia Wright, and am delighted to have finally been able to spend the day with Mouette and Justin. They did not disappoint.
I read the book first and then got to enjoy the audio version narrated by the outstanding Tim Campbell. I was thrilled to listen to Tim Campbell narrate another of Cynthia Wright’s books. His voice and various accents helps to draw you into the story and bring the characters to life. I will now always think of Justin as “Juhs-tahn”. Cynthia Wright’s storytelling paired with Tim Campbell’s narration are both engaging and satisfying and I hope this partnership continues.

I still have my well-read/well-loved paperback copy of YOU AND NO OTHER. It has long been one of my favorites, but I confess to not having reread it in awhile. This time, instead of my paperback, I switched between my ebook copy and the audiobook. After reading and listening to this book, I recalled how much I really loved reading romances set during medieval times. YOU AND NO OTHER provides the back story to Cynthia Wright's Beauvisage books. She also recently updated it a bit to drop hint about the famous DaVinci painting of François I that is a major plot point in THE SECRET OF LOVE.
Aimée de Fleurance inadvertently insults King François I upon meeting him, but his good friend, Thomas St. Briac, is able to smooth things over. Soon after this meeting, to escape an unwanted marriage, Aimée disguises herself and joins the king's court, but realizes that as soon as the king recognizes her, all will be lost. St. Briac reluctantly agrees to help her, but she can only hide for so long. They both become more embroiled in schemes and intrigue than they imagined, while desperately fighting their attraction to one another.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, including the historical details of François I and his court. Wright's descriptions of the clothing and food of the time give the reader a strong sense of time and place. Aimée is a spunky heroine, always ready to try a new scheme to escape a tangled situation. St. Briac is an alpha-hero with out being too overbearing or dominating. I enjoyed his humor, sensitivity, and friendship with François.
Fans of Cynthia Wrigtht's other books, will enjoy reading about the Beauvisage ancestors, not only for the connection, but for the story itself. Those unfamiliar with her work, will want to read more!
As mentioned, on this reread, I read my ebook and listened to the audiobook. Sometimes at the same time and sometime not. Tim Campbell is the narrator and as expected, he did a fabulous job. While the story is set in France, Campbell limits his French accent to the French words in the text and the narration is more of a British English. I am grateful for this, because if the entire book was read in a French accent, I think it would be harder to understand. In his narration, there is enough French to get a strong feel for the setting. Despite the fact that I finished reading the ebook before I finished listening, I continued to listen to the book, well, just because. I look forward to listening to more Wright-Campbell audiobooks!
I was given a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I was also given a free version of the updated ebook, that included minor text edits as well as an additional scene with the DaVinci painting of François I. (Before receiving this ebook, I did already own the original paperback and an older edition of the ebook.)

THE SECRET OF LOVE is Cynthia Wright's newest entry in her Rakes and Rebels series. It is the story of Lady Isabella Trevarre and Gabriel St. Briac, who first met in SMUGGLER'S MOON. At 14, Izzie declared upon seeing St. Briac for the first time, “That is the man I will marry!” Now grown and nearly on the shelf, Lady Isabella is less concerned about propriety and more focused on her art, spending time under the tutelage of the renowned artist, Madame Le Brun. Gabriel has given up some of his smuggling ways and is determined to find a way to keep safe his heritage: a painting of King Francis, supposedly painted by Leonardo daVinci.
As is her trademark, Wright has created a love story that weaves real history into the backdrop of her characters. This time, it is the crime of stolen artwork, including Gabriel's beloved painting, during the Napoleonic era. The settings of Cornwall, England and war-torn France are well-described, the characters well-drawn and I was captivated as I followed Izzie and Gabriel fighting their attraction and on the hunt for the stolen painting.
Of course, what would the story be without cameos from Raveneau and Beavisage families? Mouette Raveneau is Izzie's best friend and there is a visit Isabella and Gabriel visit Nicholai and Lisette Beavisage at their Château du Soleil.
THE SECRET OF LOVE stands alone, but is made richer by reading the other Rakes and Rebels books, where you can discover the back stories of the cameos. I look forward to the next installment, HIS MAKE-BELIEVE BRIDE, to read the story of Mouette and Justin St. Briac.
Here is my review of the audio version: This was the first time that I listened to one of Cynthia Wright's books. Tim Campbell is a master of his craft. His voice is enchanting and he brings all of the characters to life. His wonderful French accent helped me get a better feel for the characters. While listening, I was limited in what else I was able to do because I got so lost in the story. I can't wait to listen to more of Cynthia Wright's books narrated by Tim Campbell. I received a free review copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
