Ambiguity of Identity
Revisado: 11-15-23
This is a complex, yet available story in the ways of classic literature. The underlying themes of identity and belonging are universal.
At the same time, it can be read on the surface as a straightforward unknown person story.

Historia
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

Memoir and History
Revisado: 09-11-23
This is an invaluable book. Knowing the outcome, it is hard to capture the mindset of the combatants. The structure of the book, beginning on the beach and ending at an inshore battery also helps to understand what happened that day.
I would also recommend John Keegan’s “The Face of Battle” for another ground level view.

Historia
Horace Manning, scientist, recluse and 'closed book' even to his friends, is found dead in his study at 4a.m., following a dinner in honour of his daughter's engagement. An ivory-handled carving knife rests between his shoulder blades as the houseguests gather round to witness the awful crime. The telephone line has been sabotaged - a calculated murder has been committed. At first, I was going to send it back. It seemed predictable.
However, I kept listening and found it intriguing and sometimes funny. I am glad I read it.

Historia
Vivian Lestrange - celebrated author of the popular mystery novel The Charterhouse Case and total recluse - has apparently dropped off the face of the Earth. Reported missing by his secretary Eleanor, whom Inspector Bond suspects to be the author herself looking for publicity, it appears that crime is afoot when Lestrange's housekeeper is also found to have disappeared. Bond and Warner of Scotland Yard set to work to investigate a murder with no body and a potentially fictional victim.

Intricate and surprisingly fresh. The puzzle is complex, but not ridiculous. The period details, particularly the transport is great.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Historia
It's a rainy, uneventful evening in the Oddfellows' Arms until a man bursts into the pub, clearly unstable, and ranting about a body in Fennings' Mill. The police investigate and stumble upon a body-the face smeared with theatrical make-up and a false mustache pasted neatly over the lip. Once the national news descends, Inspector Faddiman calls in Inspector Littlejohn to help him uncover the dark, hidden secrets in this quiet, provincial town. Soon it becomes clear that a lot of people can't, and won't tell the truth.

Spiv???

I did not know the meaning of the word Spiv. I had not heard it before.
I am troubled by supporting hate speech.
One of the reasons, I read mysteries is to gain insight into other times and cultures.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Great narration Interesting subject
Revisado: 07-10-19
Many professors in the Great Courses series should have hired aa professional narrator. She has a very pleasant voice, and is clearly passionate about her subject. I believe that she has read the books she references, whether they be in French, German, Italian or Old English.
i took a course on the Life of Johnson, either though I was an engineering major. This course is on a level with that course.
I have read Pepys’ diary and confirm the authenticity of her facts.

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares.

Fascinating Alienation
Revisado: 02-27-19
I liked the heroine Binti. She is both smart and brave, but not a fool. She decides to go after an education and is very clear headed about the price she will pay for her dream. No whining from her. On the other hand, she has the good sense to be frightened when something horrible happens.
This book deals with prejudice in subtle and powerful ways.

Mysterious Japan
Revisado: 02-13-19
This mystery has a very good story and resolution. But its excellence is its ability to make the mystery unique to the place of origin — Japan.
I first visited Japan several times in the 1980s. It was and still remains a unique place. Although Japan has changed considerably since that time, the characters, behaviors and place details feel authentic.
Mysteries give us the ability to see the inside of these character’s actions and motivation. Initially, I thought this was going to become a sappy series of short stories. However, the author was able to pull it all together to create a much better than average mystery.

Innovative Concept Needs Editor
Revisado: 03-04-18
The Liu’s have created an innovative science fiction trilogy in these three books (The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest and Death’s End). At the beginning of each volume the writing is superb. And the overall concept is intriguing. But, as more and more science and science theory are packed into the books, the quality of the writing deteriorates.
I also believe I am receiving some inkling of the difference between Chinese and US political views and practices. This alone makes the time worthwhile.
I am glad I read them and feel they were worth the credits and time.
