The fifth story in the Seven Brides of South Dakota will have Lula Arnsby doing what no other family member has, attending Normal School to earn her teaching certificate. The first two years have been hard, not the classes or work, but due to her tormentor, Barton Oleson.

Lula Arnsby has known since she was little that she wanted to be a teacher. But, in 1895, that still required a woman to remain unmarried. So she decides that she will forego marriage and instead concentrate on her career plans. Barton Oleson has been her nemesis, always doing things, pulling her curls, putting things in her seat—she is hoping that this third year won't be like the past two years. She can never forgive him for what he has done to her.

"I'll hate you 'til the day you die, Barton Oleson!"

"At the end of term last year, after two years of trying to get Lula's attention, he'd almost given up. Almost. That girl was a part of him as much as his arm. Although he could survive without either, he'd prefer not to."

The story's plot will have Lula and Izzy returning to classes and receive a shock. It seems that Barton Oleson worked hard all summer and has earned himself a position as a student-teacher. But soon into the term, Professor Cook will be injured, and Mr. Oleson will now teach the class.

The story was an emotional roller coaster ride as we listened to the audiobook. Ms. Kari Trumbo brings her characters to life and allows the reader or listener to become immersed in this tale. The main story will be the relationship between Lula and Barton and how they slowly put their differences aside from the past two years. Barton grows up, he isn't doing the juvenile things he did the first two years, and now he is in a position of authority. But, that brings about a new situation; he isn't supposed to fraternize with students. How will he get Lula to fall in love with him like he is with her? Lula is so determined to become a teacher—and marriage is not in the picture. The story will have a second couple, Izzy and another student. Life will change for these two couples as the story progresses and the Christmas break comes around.

I loved the dialog, characters, interaction, and realism of this tale. It has the good, the bad, and the ugly of life and people—but it also offers hope and a future with patience. The story is a clean, godly-based historical western without curse words or intimate scenes. It does have a happy ending and can read well as a stand-alone. I guess you could say that Barton does grow up and learns that playing tricks on a girl is not the way to gain her interest. He isn't genuinely interested in becoming a teacher—but, his feelings for her are so strong that he is willing to give up the summer, gain experience, and return as a student teacher for the fall. Lula is caught between her head and her heart in what she wants for her future. Her family has sacrificed for her to attend school to become a teacher. Does the future offer a chance for both? A lifelong dream of becoming a teacher and still able to become a wife?

The fourth story in the Seven Brides of South Dakota will have Chief newspaper reporter Clive Davidson assigned to cover an Englishman in town. He will also be approached by Frances Arnsby, a budding writer who believes she has the best romance story—one that would make an excellent serial for the newspaper—but it lacks any real feelings for a romance.

Frances Arnsby has been penpals with a girl in Rapid, and now she is going there to meet her and stay with her family. Constance Charity comes from a well-to-do family, but she isn't an excellent hostess for Frances. To top it off, Constance has earned herself a less than favorable reputation by another newspaperman that reports gossip—and it isn't flattering what is being said about her.

Clive Davidson has earned the title of Chief reporter for the Black Hill Union newspaper. His reports are truthful, factual, unlike P. E. Dunworthy, who is known for his gossip column. When Clive is approached at the newspaper by Frances Arnsby, he has just been assigned to follow and write a story about a visiting Englishman.

The story's plot will have Frances visiting a friend in Rapid and hoping to get an audience with the newspaper about her romance story. She hopes they could either help her get it published or consider it a serial addition to the newspaper. She approaches Clive Davidson and leaves her book. Clive reads it, and it lacks any 'real feelings or romance.' He comes up with the idea of Frances and the visiting Englishman to tour the area together—maybe she will learn a bit about romance, and the Dandy will be happy when he returns home.

"What she needed most, he couldn't give her with marks. She needed to live life. There was a naivety to her writing that would never be accepted as romantic. Though, the potential was there. While her characters were flat, the story itself held promise. If there were a way for her to experience life, she could add that to her story, and it might be enough to get published."

The story was an emotional roller coaster ride as we listened to the audiobook. Ms. Kari Trumbo brings her characters to life and allows the reader or listener to become immersed in this tale. It will have Frances, the Englishman, Constance, and Clive touring areas of Rapids so she can possibly experience life and romance for her story—and for Clive to have his article for Mr. Marksman. But, it doesn't take long for Clive to become concerned about Frances's well-being and develop feelings of protection—but could it be more? Frances believes that Clive and Constance are becoming an item, and that saddens her—but her goal on this trip is to find a way to publish her book, and if going on outings is the answer, she will do so.

Letters as pen pals didn't prove to be the same as life. Yes, Constance talked about Reginald and how she knew they would marry, but he turned out to be a cad. Her family proves less than charitable to Frances. Clive learns what matters is not the next story, which will be here today and gone tomorrow, but people, feelings, and the future. Has he realized what he needs to chase after is not a story, but Frances—and that she is his future?

The third story in the Seven Brides of South Dakota will have Ranger Captain George Roth out on a mission to observe Indian activity when he watches a female who turns out to be Eva Arnsby dressed in men's clothing. He believes her to be a spy and needs to see who she is meeting. He witnesses her falling, and when he goes to her, he wants to know what she is hiding. This will be their story involving mystery and suspense.

Eva Arnsby uses her artistic talents to help her during the disappearance of her twin sister, Hattie. The family understood she felt lost without her twin and had allowed her some freedom. She will sneak men's clothing off the line to wear so she can wander the land better and enjoys drawing pictures of nature, the animals, flowers, and even the Indian brave she has seen.

Ranger, Captain George Roth has spent months at a time, well hidden, observing the land and people—watching for Indian movement, determining if they are friendly or foe. But, his job also has him on alert, watching for anything suspicious, and when he sees a female wandering around in men's clothing, something hidden under her shirt, he confronts her. When he removes the twine to get the items, out falls pencils and a notebook. When Eva passes out, he takes her back to Aiden Bradley's place—but keeps her notebook as evidence.

The story was an emotional roller coaster ride as we listened to the audiobook. Ms. Kari Trumbo brings her characters to life and allows the reader or listener to become immersed in this tale. A plan is hatched to study Eva better, having an influential person invite her to Deadwood to help work on a gift for the town—a new library. Eva will work with George Roth, who has shaved, dressing up, and must see if she is a spy. The more they are together, the more he is convinced she isn't. She is just a kind woman with an artistic talent who can draw what she sees—plants, animals, or even Indians. But, not knowing Indian customs will also play a part in this story, one that will put Eva's very life and future in jeopardy. Will Hawktail decide that Eva is a worthy wife and rightfully his? Will George Roth be able to save her before it becomes too late?

The relationship between George and Eva has many ups and downs before they discover and can admit their feelings for one another. George left his life back East, making the military his choice. Now, he is giving that up. Eva may have Hattie back, but Hattie has a new life with Hugh, and she still feels lost. Will she ever be able to get a further education—will this unique opportunity to help catalog the library be her only way to give back to the community? Nothing is ever as easy as one dreams, but sometimes the future changes and takes you onto a new chapter in your life—that will be the case for George and Eva.

The second story in the Seven Brides of South Dakota will have Hugh Bradley, sent by the Arnsby family to locate Hattie. Hattie has been missing for about a year, and Sheriff Seth Bullock has deputized Hugh. The journey will bring him to Keystone to find a strung-out, emancipated Hattie. While he can get her out of the Red Garter, they must remain in Keystone until her status is handled.

Hattie Arnsby left her family's safety for a pipe dream, with faith that Roy was going to save her and marry her—but that dream quickly became a nightmare. He used her, then sold her to Ros at the Red Garter, and that is where Hugh will find her. Now they need to wait for a circuit judge to decide if she was coerced? Did she sign a document? And what will the future hold?

"He tricked me. He told me he cared. I don't want to be here anymore. I am Hattie Arnsby. Take me home, whoever you are."

"Good to find you, Miss Arnsby. Sorry it took me so long. I'm Hugh Bradly, and I'll get you out of her as quickly as I can."

I loved the dialog, characters, interaction, and realism of this tale. It has the good, the bad, and the ugly of life and people—but it also offers hope and a future with patience. The story is a clean, godly-based historical western without curse words or intimate scenes. It does have a happy ending and can read well as a stand-alone

The story was an emotional roller coaster ride as we listened to the audiobook. The author, Ms. Kari Trumbo, brings her characters to life and allows the reader or listener to become immersed in this tale. Both my husband and I talked about how sad it was that another human could do vile things to another person. Hattie wanted love and freedom and instead found abuse and prison. Forced to be a prostitute and staying so drunk she could escape from the pain of her life. But, this story is about perseverance, acceptance, not judging, learning to trust, learning that God never leaves us, and even when we think He has abandoned us, it is, in fact, us who has turned away from Him. When calling upon God, and listening to His voice, and following His lead, that salvation is given. This is one of the highs in this story.

"How can I believe in a God that ignores those who need Him most?"

Several people will play critical roles in helping Hattie see that God is there for everyone, and even when you doubt, He still loves you. Ezzy, the seamstress, Hugh Bradley, and several others will gently talk to Hattie about God and His love—and when Hattie listens and trusts, God directs her too.

"All right. You have my attention, God. The last two times I've wanted to give up, you presented a way of escape. I heard you tell me to jump, now what?"

Hugh and Hattie will both be challenged—when Sheriff Bullock and the Arnsby family can't come to Keystone—the telegram tells him to marry her—to protect her. Why would Hattie want to be forced to marry a stranger? Will God open Hugh's eyes to His word? Will Ezzy help Hattie see that she is more than a calico queen and has a chance for a future with Hugh? Will a wedding gown matter what color it is—or is finding a man who loves you no matter what has happened the happily ever after part?

"You wear whatever dress you want to wear. A wedding is one special day, a marriage is a lifetime."

The story is a continuation of the saga of the McCutcheon Family, their ranch hands, family, and friends. While this is an ongoing saga, the story is told in such a way that you could read it as a stand-alone and not feel lost. While the characters are from previous books, they are well defined without retelling their story, and the reader can easily follow along. The story is a clean historical romance, mystery with suspense, a crime of passion, murder, and a man fighting for justice and his life, while one other will find love when least expected. The story has many intense scenes, moments of life and death, and will keep the reader on the edge of their seat as the mystery unfolds. Ms. Caroline Fyffe has spun this tale in such an elaborate fashion of throwing in bit and pieces of critical details, without naming names of potential suspects.

A cheating wife and her lover will kill her husband, Benson, when he arrives home early and sees them together through the window. While deciding how to get rid of his body, Luke McCutcheon just happens to ride up looking for Colton. He becomes their scapegoat and keeps this tale as a page turner from the beginning to the end. Will the lie that Blanche tells be able to protect her and her lover?

“How had her life gotten so out of control? One bad decision had led to another, and another, until she lived each day in a web of lies.”

What is to be a quick trip to help a friend celebrate his wedding, and time with his son, Colton, will change with a false accusation of murder and attempted murder placed upon Luke McCutcheon. Being in a town away from home, the stranger in the area, he will be found guilty in the eyes of the citizens of Priest's Crossing before a trial ever takes place.

The story has a large cast of characters, and many will be critical in this story as Luke is jailed and the Sheriff Jack Jones and his deputy, Hoss Carter, make no effort to try and find the real killer. Taking the word of a battered widow, it will be up to his ranch hands to arrive and play detective.

The story shows the faith and loyalty of the McCutcheon ranch hands, and how they do what they can to protect Luke, and eventually Colton and Faith while trying to discover the evidence needed to help clear Luke’s name.
The story also has a love story in the works, when Francis meets Ashley Adair, the town’s schoolteacher, and friend to the recent widow, Blanche. While she believes her friend, the more she learns and keeps an open mind, the more she questions the truth. When she and Francis become friends, they start developing feelings. But her life is in Priest's Crossing with her widowed mother, teaching school, and their apple orchard. Can two people fall in love in just a couple weeks?

“I hope you like surprises. I’ve always been fond of giving them. I’ll fill your days with surprises and your nights with love.”

The story is a continuation of the saga of the McCutcheon Family, their ranch hands, and life in the Y Knot area. The McCutcheon’s own the Heart of the Mountain’s Ranch where they raise cattle. Many of the people in the story are part of previous books, but the story is told in a way you don’t feel lost or that it is previous retelling stories. It will read well as a standalone novel. The story is a clean historical romance, with Christian undertones, but does not come off as preachy.
The first quarter of the book is all the preparations for the impending snow storm, moving people, getting what animals can be placed in barns or shelter, and making sure wood, food, and supplies are at the ready. It depicts the struggles of the lives of people, animals, and livestock, along with the dangers of predators, like wolves.

The story has a vast amount of characters, many of previous books, but this story will strongly focus on a ranch hand, Shad Petty, and Bostonian Poppy Ford. Poppy’s sister, Kathryn, was a mail order bride to Tobit Preece. Poppy and family friend, Oscar Scott, show up at Kathryn’s and have stayed too late in the season, and are now snowed in. Oscar is pretentious, arrogant, and condescending to everyone he meets. Poppy has lived a pampered life and is shocked at how well Kathryn has adjusted to her life with her husband, to the point she is happy.

The story is the life and death struggles during this horrific blizzard that take the lives of both man and beast. The dangers that must be faced, the life and death decisions of housing, food, and supplies, they will undergo to survive. Shad is expecting his younger brothers any day, and worries about their travels, but they are smart. When in town, he must help the Sheriff with law and order, and his time with Poppy is bittersweet. Poppy will learn more about herself, her character, and what is important in life. Shad will have to decide if he is willing to take a chance on Poppy, or let her go? The story has many intense and emotional scenes, some heartbreak, and enlightening moments.

The eighth book in the McCutcheon Family Series will begin in 1886 in San Antonio, Texas where Dustin and Chaim McCutcheon had gone to attend court as a witness for a cowhand who has wrongfully been accused of murder when he was at their ranch when it happened. Dustin will see a beautiful young woman in the mercantile and what a shock to see her again in the courtroom and learn she is Sidney Calhoun, sister to Noah Calhoun. A long-time family feud is stemming over two decades between their father’s, Winston McCutcheon and Jock Calhoun, and will be a huge factor in this story.

The plot will have seventeen-year-old Noah Calhoun up on charges of causing damage to the Morning Star Saloon, and Sidney is there to try and pay restitution and get him released. She has developed a habit of cleaning up his messes. When the judge sees both Calhoun and McCutcheon in his courtroom, he will turn the tables, knowing the of the family feud and force Dustin McCutcheon to take Noah Calhoun to the Rim Rock Ranch and make him work off his fine and damages. But, Sidney refuses to allow her brother to go there unprotected and will follow them back to Rio Wells.

The story is full of angst, anger, attitude, lies, mystery, suspense, danger, and adventure. Will Dustin be able to learn more about the night that Jock Calhoun was attacked and left for dead and blaming Winston McCutcheon. The long-time feud has carried down to their children. But what happens with Dustin turns out to be a gentleman, a man of his word, and protects not only Sidney but Noah too, showing his good trusting nature? Will Sidney begin to see a different side of Dustin and the McCutcheon family? What happens when two people start to fall in love, and how will their respective families react? Are they betraying their families, or will they be able to help heal them? Will the truth of the attack come out, and how will it impact them?

The story mostly takes place in Rio Wells and will have the Texas McCutcheon family, as well as, Dr. John and his wife, Lilly McCutcheon of the Montana lineage. Many of the townsfolk that was introduced in a previous story will also be in this addition—yet it will read well as a stand-alone story.

I enjoyed this addition to the American Mail-Order Brides series, and each book will read well as a stand-alone. I loved all the mystery and secrets, and yet secrets have a way of causing issues. One man, Samuel Morrison, seeking a wife and mother for his little girl will finally take the plunge and send for a mail-order bride to come to Iowa. Two women, meeting by chance, each with a different want or need will play a role in this tale.

Maddie Peters had a good lift until her father took ill and she and her mother had to take on more responsibilities around their small farm. Eventually, he was able to work again, but he worked for others, and then his death will shatter mother and daughter. But when her mother decides to marry another, they go from existing to fear, and their situation is dire. With her mother dying, her stepfather a drunk—an attempted rape—and his death will have Maddie fleeing. Meeting Hannah Brown at the railway station will bring about a change and future.

The story is full of secrets that haunt Maddie as she pretends to be Samuel’s mail-order bride, Hannah. Falling in love with his daughter, and she is very attracted to Samuel and developing feelings for him. His family thinks the world of her, but her lie is hanging over her head. What will happen when Samuel learns she has deceived him?

The story will have several intense moments of life and death, that keep the pages turning as it unfolds. What will Maddie and Samuel do when the past comes knocking on their door? The story is a sweet clean romance with plenty of mystery, suspense, angst, and offers forgiveness and new beginnings.

The seventh story in the McCutcheon Family Series will finally have Roady Gutherie’s story. He is the longtime foreman for the Heart of the Mountain ranch. Roady has a score to settle with a massive killer grizzly bear named Behemoth—but rather than finding the bear, he will make another startling discovery, that of a nearly frozen woman in the hunting cabin. The story will read as a stand-alone but is an on-going saga that will have many people from previous stories. It will introduce several new people including Sally Stanford and a boy named Hickory.

Sally Stanford has left her home and family in St. Louis with the pretense of a planned trip to see her sister, Heather Klinkner, and their brother, Morgan. She will take a train and then stagecoach heading toward Y Knot, Montana. She is hiding a secret, one she doesn’t want her parents and siblings to know about—yet she trust Heather and is heading to see her, and hope to have a place to stay and seek refuge.

The plot will have Sally on the stagecoach with two other women and a little boy, plus the driver and shotgun rider. When a freak mishap causes an accident, it will be Sally who is asked to take one of the mules and seek help in the next town. The directions aren’t clear, and she gets turned around, and then the snow starts falling. Luck and a stubborn mule will land her at an abandoned cabin.

Roady must get to shelter with this snow falling. What a shock to see a mule in the coral, and yet the cabin is dark. Inside, he finds a young girl, nearly frozen. It becomes a matter of life and death to save her. Then they are stuck in the cabin for several days due to the heavy snow. What will become of either one of their reputations is the least of their concerns until the snow lets up and hunting parties are searching for them.

Several days together, playing games and talking will have Sally trusting Roady. But later, when she will talk to him later and share her plight—but will he be amicable towards helping her? Marriage is forever. Roady is concerned she will never be able to love him, pining away after another man, and Sally is concerned she can’t give herself to Roady. What will it take for these two to talk honestly and find happiness?

The story of Trudy will read well as a stand-alone and even better if you have also read Caroline Fyffe's stories on other mail-order brides from the same Matrimonial agency, with brides by the names of Evie, Kathryn, and Heather. Several of the other mail-order brides may be mentioned in the story, but not reading about them prior will not hinder the understanding of the friendships developed. There are several more stories in this series by Debra Holland, including Lina, Darcy, Prudence, and Bertha. Mrs. Seymour seems to have a special talent for matching the right bride to the gentleman seeking a bride.

Trudy Bauer of St. Louis, Missouri will accept the offer for marriage from Seth Flanagan of Sweetwater Springs in the Montana Territory. She will travel by railroad to her new home along with a substantial amount of home goods given to her by her father.

The story will have Trudy and Seth basically liking each other from first sight, but that doesn't mean they won't have their ups and downs. Starting with the shock from him of all the items she brought with her, and her shock at how small his home is. She will meet several of the townspeople and develop a friendship or two. I love the enthusiasm of Trudy, with her bubbly personality and gentle way about her that endears those she meets.

Seth likes his new wife but fears he will never love her but is smart enough not to reveal those feelings. She proves that she can cook, keep house, and be diplomatic with difficult people. Just when things seem to be going perfectly, trouble is to be stirred. Has Trudy made an error in marrying him? Will Seth lose her before things can be made right?

The story is a clean, sweet, historical based mail order bride story with Christian elements but not preachy. It has the good, the bad, and the trouble-makers that are ugly. The phrase, "kill them with kindness" is fitting for the way Trudy knows how to kindly deal with difficult people.
