Great story, terrible narration
Revisado: 06-12-24
I agree with the negative reviews of the narrator. Her pronunciation is terrible and her pitch and cadence cheapen the story and minimize its full impact. This is an incredible story with many layers, and there are narrators who could have brought it to life in all its fullness. Audible, PLEASE re-record this with different narration, so that readers and listeners aren’t robbed of this beautiful, heartbreaking, hopeful story.

Historia
Bound to wheelchairs and dependent on prosthetic limbs, the physically disabled students living in the House are overlooked by the Outsides. Not that it matters to anyone living in the House, a hulking old structure that its residents know is alive. From the corridors and crawl spaces to the classrooms and dorms, the House is full of tribes, tinctures, scared teachers, and laws - all seen and understood through a prismatic array of teenagers' eyes.

Press on...it's worth it! But new narrator PLEASE!
Revisado: 05-30-23
Wow...what a ride! I went from forcing myself to press on and finish it, to wanting to start over the minute I was done! I listened to it (36 hours!) while also going back frequently and re-reading portions. I have to say the narrator is abysmal, but it's the only way I would have had time to get through it. If you can read it rather than listen, by all means do! He almost ruined for me. I would definitely lobby for another narrator to give it a go. But overall this book was haunting, beautiful, absurd, mesmerizing, and has more layers than one can fully grasp in a single reading. I will for sure be revisiting the gray house (or the better Russian title - "The House, in Which... ") again in my lifetime! I also found some fan art depicting the characters...look it up - they're fabulous!

Nor does she know much of anything about her father, who died in Afghanistan when she was a toddler. But when Sparrow sets out to confirm her Creek ancestry through genetic testing, Skye joins in. Poorly written, poorly performed
Revisado: 11-30-22
Read this for a book club. Started listening to it, as I do many of my books, but couldn't stand the narrator. She wasn't believable and cheapened the overall tone of the book. The story itself was poorly constructed, as if the author wanted to shove in as many surprises, "shocks," and heartstring-pulling moments as possible, while also touching on deep historical and racial issues that she did not develop. It all felt very hodge podge and immature in terms of her level of writing. I haven't read anything else by this author, so I can't comment on her work overall, but this particular book is not worth your time.

This book is a must-listen!
Revisado: 05-28-21
The author told a powerful story, with smaller stories woven in. Great narrator! A must-listen!
