Decent story, boring narration
Revisado: 04-09-25
While this narrator has the ability to voice characters and pronounce terminology very well, he has absolutely no dynamic range. The entire story is read like he's on Xanax. I'm to believe that an entire cast of Viking warriors always speak in whispers and mumbles. He will literally read a spoken passage that finishes with "he bellowed" in a whisper...is that what bellowing is to you!?! Why is a Viking God whispering a spell as they ride into combat!? Please wake up and actually perform the text you're reading with the dynamic range presented in the very text you are reading!! It makes the entire story feel much more sleepy and boring than it actually is and it's very frustrating, for what is actually an action and adventure filled story.

Historia
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

What an enjoyable discovery! great characters, great action, interesting plot, fun use of magic. Feels like a cross between LotR and the Witcher, with a modern style. Very much looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

Overall decent but...
Revisado: 05-18-23
I enjoyed the unique first person plot device and most of the story was solid but I felt like it dragged in the last half or third of the book. Many of Kyler's ramblings could have been cut down significantly and it just made parts drag some. Also, I was surprised at how much of the time Kyler is portrayed as basically a clueless screw up. I mean he's supposed to be the Night Angel and even per Durzo's on admission, a Master by now. So how do we have a story where he basically just screws up over and over and over again, on basic assassin detail work? I'm ready to see him ascend to be the true Master I want to read about, not a whiney self loathing cry baby. Please move the story on already, Mr Weeks.

Historia
When an unknown someone shoots him and leaves him to die, Harry Dresden hopes he might be heading to a better place. Unfortunately being dead doesn't make Harry's life any easier. Trapped between life and death, he learns that his friends are in serious trouble. Only by finding his murderer can he save his friends and move on - a feat that would be a lot easier if he had a body and access to his powers. Worse still are the malevolent shadows that roam Chicago, controlled by a dark entity that wants Harry to suffer even in death.

Changes may have set up a whole new paradigm for Dresden but this book is the payoff and fills so many gaps you didn't even know you needed to know. Absolutely awesome.

Historia
There’s a lot that Jarlaxle doesn’t know: is he the lone survivor of the raid on the slaad fortress, can he even find a way to get out, and beyond his immediate predicament, could he possibly escape the ice caverns and get help for his friends? However, what Jarlaxle does know is that if he plans to come back—if Catti-brie, Entreri, and Zaknafein are to have any hope of surviving—he’s going to have to bring back far more firepower. An army of aevendrow seems unlikely, so he must go home and pull together a team with great skill and unimaginable power.

Not the best, but still worth the read.
Revisado: 08-24-22
This wasn't quite as good as Starlight Enclave. starting the book with 9 straight chapters of Menzobarrenzan civil war and matron mother bickering was very frustrating for me. I really have nothing but apathy for those stories when our main characters are not directly involved.
But we do get some decent nuggets along the way and once we get into our main character's story/situation things do get more interesting.
Overall this book definitely has that "middle book in a trilogy" syndrome where it doesn't really feel like a full story all in it's own. Not an overly satisfying resolution to everything, nevertheless serves as an important bridge or transitional book that is necessary to move the story along to the finale. Anxious to see how he wraps up this particular storyline as much still feels unresolved.
If you are a Drizzt fan, you certainly must read this book, just go into it knowing you'll be left wanting a more at the end.

Great story, awful voice portrayals...
Revisado: 06-06-22
Perhaps I would feel different if Elliot Hill was the original voice actor for the Realm of the Elderlings, but with the exception of Fitz himself, the portrayal of almost every single other character in these stories is just awful. The Fool, Chade, Kettricken, Dutiful...just terrible portrayals. The Kelsingra Elderlings are even worse. The voice given to Rapskal and Rayne Cupris are so absurd I can barely tolerate those chapters. completely mind boggling to me how after 13 books into the stories of this universe they lost all congruence for how these characters voices are portrayed and names are pronounced. No congruence at all. It's a shame because the story itself is really great but the voice portrayals in this trilogy is just awful.

With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

Abercrombie is still an absolute master of the phrase...clever and artful at every utterance. And Steven Pacey's narration is so perfect I cannot imagine these books without his masteruo characterization and inflection. Absolutely one of the best in the whole series.

The books are great but man I wish someone would tell Victor Bevine how to pronounce "short-lived". 5 books in and he's said it so absurdly at least half a dozen times I don't know how some producer or editor hasn't said something. But that's just my pet peeve I suppose.

Great story, awful narration.
Revisado: 02-05-21
The story was great as any of the Powder Mage stories but this narrator was one of the worst I've heard. He literally whispers the ENTIRE STORY. It's annoying and creepy cause it feels like he's breathing hot breath in your ear the whole time. Luckily this was a short story. I don't know that I could have tolerated it for 30 or 50 hours worth of a novel.
