I love tanks. I love the Imperial Guard...or the Astra Miliwhatever. This book is great! As a guy with two Leman Russ Companies in my 40K army totaling 27 tanks - I loved all of this story! It inspired me to rework my organization and put Steel Tread in my ranks.

It's actually a classic story of a new commander having to prove herself to her troops and prove to herself she can lead. But it's dressed up in the Warhammer world where there's constant was, heretics are all around, Cadia has fallen, and there's bad attitudes all around. There's hardly any parts where there isn't action. If it isn't the actual war going on, it's the tension within a tank crew of amalgamated forces from four different home worlds, a bitter Cadian second in command who thinks non-Cadians aren't quite up to their standards, and a brand new non-Cadian Commander. Throw in a religious zealot for a driver who thinks everyone else is hopeless heathen, and hilarity ensues.

I couldn't do this story justice at all here, but I absolutely recommend giving it your time and attention. This was my first Warhammel novel, and it's one Im going to keep coming back to, to enjoy while I'm building new models.

Even though you go into this knowing how it ends the story, the development of characters, and the performance has you on the edge of your seat. I've been a WH40K for almost 10 years and I've played Imperial guard the whole time. My army is almost entirely Cadian. This story was almost personal to me. It had me rewinding several times saying out loud "Did that just happen?!?" I won't write a review as long as the book, I'll just say it's entirely worth the Audible credit. If I wasn't a Pro Member, I'd be happy having paid whatever it cost to listen. The performance sold every word. I know I'll listen again, more than once. I feel like this is a great companion piece to Steel Tread, another great 40K book I've listened to a few times now.

I really prefer the longer Warhammer series stories because they take a lot more time to flesh out characters, tell a more imersive story, and get into all the details. This one was great. It really did throw me for a loop a few times.

The story wasn't just 2 dimensional. It was all told from one character's point of view but through him you get to consider several different views of what's going on.

This was another one that I hated having to pause or stop and continue later. If I could have I would have listen to all 10+ hours straight through!

This was the perfect book to listen to while I finished working on a couple of Armigers and my Cerastus Acheron. This story was complex but fun to follow and had great twists! I'll most likely listen to it again, more than once. Based on this story I ordered models of the Assassinorium characters. I don't know if I'll ever play them or take them as allies to my Guard army, but I'm really. Looking forward to having them to build and see in front of my whole thinking about the story.

I first read WWZ on a deployment in 2010.it was kind of our unit read through. I was so upset with the disappointing shambles of a movie they made with the name of this brilliantly written book. I decided to give this a go just to refresh the story in my head, to have something on in the background while I worked. But I was not prepared for just how well this story was performed here! As each interview is voice acted to perfected in my head I recognized so many of the voices and I was delighted at who I heard over and over. It's no exageration to call this a star studded cast. Ill definitely be giving it another listen through soon!

I liked this story the first time I heard it - when it was called Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy. I can't believe it costs a whole Audible credit to listen to this "story" that equates to about 2 or 3 chapters of a complete novel that costs the same.

First , this is a great telling of a 20th Century Air Warrior's experience. especially because I belong to the 21st Century Air Force generation. Thus wasn't only entertaining but it was a history lesson on a personal level, because as Buck (the author and pilot) tells the story of how they deployed to Desert Shield and fought Desert Storm I could see the direct connection and lessons learned that lead to how my units did it in Enduring & Iraqi Freedom. even if you have no military experience Buck takes the time to spell out and explain most of thr militaryisms so civilians aren't left scratching their heads.

What nearly killed this book is the absolute terrible performance by whoever was reading it. There were countless mistakes that took me right out of the story. Things that I can only attribute to his lack of preparation, or rushing to get the read done. for example he constantly transposed letters in military acronyms and names. He called Kevlar vests Kelvar every single time. Apparently the US retaliatory raid on Lybia took place in 1968, not 1986 as all of history recorded. Just a couple.of example there but the narration Is fraught with them from start to finish. worst of all he doesn't seem to know when to put inflection on any part of the story. It's like a robot is trying to trick you into believing he's human, but the AI can't quite get it right.

Overall the subject matter was 5 star worthy. I nearly didn't finish it a few times due to the ear pain if the reading.

I wish I could get my credit back. I feel like this was a story written by a guy who just didn't know how to tell thia story. I love military fiction. I love science fiction. but they just didn't combine well here. it's not exciting. It's combat told almost as a procedural drama...if that makes sense.
