Historia
The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese father, Gail Tsukiyama uses the Japanese invasion of China during the late 1930s as a somber backdrop for her unusual story about a 20-year-old Chinese painter named Stephen who is sent to his family's summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from a bout with tuberculosis. Here he is cared for by Matsu, a reticent housekeeper and a master gardener. Over the course of a remarkable year, Stephen learns Matsu's secret and gains not only physical strength, but also profound spiritual insight.

An extraordinary story
Revisado: 03-14-25
I love everything about this brilliant book. The fact that I am only reading it now, 30 years after it was published, tells me that I have to be more careful and informed about finding the world’s best books. I am intentionally avoiding saying anything about it in detail since I would leave it to the reader to discover.

Compelling, frightening and true
Revisado: 02-26-25
The story started slowly in an impressionistic way that I initially found hard to follow, but as the story progressed the pace and the style became meaningful and compelling as the reader puts the pieces together. Although I didn’t feel so at first, I came to experience that the writing is brilliant. The lives of the characters became real and I see in them experience of all people in similar settings and situations. I don’t want to give anything away so I’m intentionally not providing details.

Powerful, complex, deep, brilliant
Revisado: 05-08-24
I’ve been reading all of Louise Penny’s Three Pines books in order, slowing down to savor the last few. I don’t want them to end. Since childhood, I love reading mysteries. It is not the crime that is so interesting but the search, the discovery and integration of facts, the interplay of the characters, and a resolution that brings things together in a coherent way that makes them so fascinating. Penny weaves themes of courage, love, wisdom and worthwhile human values to create powerful multilayered dramas that have applicability to our own lives. When I finish the last one of the series, I’ll probably go back and reread them. They are classics that we can read not just for the outcome, but also for the simple joy of the process of reading.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Life’s longing for itself
Revisado: 12-16-23
The Fraud read by the author, who gives original and authentic voices to each of the characters, is a remarkably compelling, complex and absorbing story set in the time of Dickens. In addition to grappling with truth, justice, history, racism and classism, writing, fiction, family, friendship and love, it explores the meaning of life, I didn’t want it to end.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Compelling book. I’ve visited and taught Ireland as a professor of law for many years. My wife found the cottage where her grandmother was born, now a ruin, but on land now owned by her cousins, I learned my father was stationed in Derry during WW II. I was raised Protestant, she Catholic. It’s time to put sectarian divisions behind.

In the past the Circus handled all things political, while the Department dealt with matters military. But the Department has been moribund since the War, its resources siphoned away. Now, one of their agents is dead, and vital evidence verifying the presence of Soviet missiles near the West German border is gone. John Avery is the Department's younger member and its last hope.

Set in the context of a spy story, this is a brilliant novel about the meaning of life shaped by senses of duty, nostalgia x10, loneliness and love and its illusions. I hope I haven’t said too much already.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.
