I love Andy Weir's books. The science-based storylines are fun for my astronomer husband as well as for me, a non-scientist. I like that the action is not included just to keep the reader's attention, but actually makes sense given the events and circumstances presented. This book was full of surprises and it was so fun to have the story unfold. It was hard to not listen to this book non-stop! I always have a little trouble with books that go back and forth between storylines and/or timelines, which this book does, but each timeline fed the desire to keep reading late into the night. Andy Weir's books have satisfying endings, not just providing resolution to some sort of crisis but also providing resolution to the characters' lives as well. If a good book has to end, at least let me know what happens to the main characters after the crisis is over. Andy does that, and my only complaint about his books is that I wish there were more of them!

Good book, poor narration

This is my 3rd Tim Tigner book. The first two I listened to from Audible were narrated by Paul Michael, who did a much better job than Dick Hill does here. I suspect I would have enjoyed this book more if the narration were not so -- forced, artificial sounding. Hill's attempt to change his voice for different characters is not successful, and the characters' words often come across as unnatural. This makes it harder to relate to the characters and care about what happens to them.

The storyline itself takes quite a while to let the listener in on what is actually going on, and that means I'm more likely to lose interest during the "preliminaries", regardless of the amount of action going on.

Overall, an okay book, terrible narration, and not my favorite Tim Tigner book. I'll give more of his books a try -- but I'm disappointed to see how many of them are read by Dick Hill.

Only One Regret...

...that it wasn't longer! Craig A. Falconer is a great author and I've enjoyed all his books I've read. My only regret is that it wasn't a longer book. However, that's kind a nice feature of these Sizzler books of his -- they are short enough that you can get through them during one or two morning and afternoon commute days, or while out for a walk. At first I wasn't sure about the narrator, but he quickly became the voice of the main character for me and I loved the story. I used to read short stories but fell out of the habit -- I could get back into it easily if the rest of the Sizzler books are like this one!

Terrible narration, slow story

After The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers (both narrated by Bill Homewood), I was disappointed that this book was not available with Homewood narrating but wanted to continue with the series. The storyline was slow going, particularly in the first half (ish) when the Four Musketeers were on separate paths. It never really seemed to catch fire though, even after they united in their mission. The real disappointment for me, however, was the narration. Between the snooty accent and the robotic, inflectionless D'Artagnan, I struggled to make it through to the end of the book. I absolutely hated Davidson's narration!

Given the numerous books written about the Star Trek universe and the dearth of unabridged audio versions available to fans, it's surprising that this trilogy was considered worthy to be among the unabridged Star Trek audiobooks offered by Audible. The writing was not anywhere near as well-done as works by many other authors of Star Trek fiction. The dialogue of the main characters felt juvenile and stilted. PLEASE, can't we get more unabridged Star Trek audiobooks?

Narrator ruined the book for us...

We've read numerous books by Dava Sobel and enjoyed them; this was the first audiobook version we've listened to of one of her works. She tends to write in a somewhat grandiose style, but the information she conveys is interesting and well-told. Unfortunately, this narrator uses an elevated tone that, when combined with Sobel's writing style, came across as a boring teacher. We found our minds wandering from the content because of its delivery. Mispronunciations of "Willamette" and Maria Mitchell's name (in her name, "Maria" should be pronounced "Mar-EYE-a") only compounded the problem. We would have done better to stick with the printed version of this book.

Everyone Should Read This

What did you like best about this story?

This is a story that should be well known by people the world over. Andrew Chaikin spent 8 years writing this book -- investing so much time and effort in his research as well as his writing -- and the result is an informative and interesting account of the Apollo program and its ultimate achievements.

Any additional comments?

While I enjoyed Bronson Pinchot's narration for the most part, his consistent and exaggerated emphasis -- particularly for times, quantities, distances, and weights -- became distracting. A book of this nature is chock full of that type of description, so it happened frequently. I found myself wishing he would just say it normally at least once in a while!

Abridged Audiobook a Disappointment

What would have made Star Trek, The Next Generation: Q-in-Law (Adapted) better?

The abridgment of the book made this far too short and did the book a disservice. Having John de Lancie and Majel Barrett read the roles of all characters, as well as provide narration, was distracting. The music (intended, I assume, as dramatization of the story) was likewise distracting.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The abridgment of the book resulted in the ending being far too sudden. I have read the book, and felt the audiobook's abrupt ending made the story seem juvenile in its presentation. I felt bad for author Peter David.

Would you be willing to try another one of Majel Barrett and John de Lancie ’s performances?

I would be willing to try another of Majel Barrett and John de Lancie's "performances" only because the number of audiobook versions of Star Trek books are surprisingly few, given the large quantity of books written for the different incarnations of Star Trek.

What character would you cut from Star Trek, The Next Generation: Q-in-Law (Adapted)?

The characters in the audiobook were not a problem for me.

Any additional comments?

I purchased this abridged audiobook because there are, sadly, too few audiobook versions of Star Trek books. I much prefer unabridged audiobooks, and was very disappointed with the dramatization of this particular book. I would rather have unabridged Star Trek audiobooks made available and narrated without the distracting music and dramatization of the story.
