Entirely Too Long-Narrator Meh
Revisado: 12-17-24
Perhaps I would have done better if I had read this old school vs audiobook. I found the narrator boring;hard to listen to, so It was a real slog for me to finish. I need to stop trying to read and/or listen to things that aren’t grabbing me. So far 2024 has been hard for me with regard to reading books AND audiobooks. I have been choosing the wrong books it seems, So do not use MY review to decide whether or not to read this book.

Historia
An utterly unsentimental journey toward the end of life, Mala is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in the moment. Grounded in Lopez’s distinctive emotional language and sharp humor, this powerful one-woman show dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace - all set during an epic Boston winter. Rather than depict a “right way”, the play opens the door for our universal struggle to support those we love in dying, especially when all we’ve ever focused on is surviving.

A Story of Love/Angst/Living & Dying
Revisado: 09-03-24
A great short story/essay a daughter caring for elderly/dying parents & a parent with dementia/post head trauma. I think the emotion bubbling under the surface was what really kept me listening; because I have BEEN where she was. The Boomer generation increasingly finds themselves the caregivers of their parents who are living ever longer thanks to modern medicine. The resolve to do better for them; the anger that you have to be the one doing it for them; the frustration with the current healthcare system in the US and the expense; the family dynamics of non-caregivers and what they think you should do is pretty spot on for many people. Some resonated with me; other situations did not…thank goodness. This is a REAL look at REAL people and problems and the reality of death/dying. Overall - I liked it a lot because I’m currently living it.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Enjoyed
Revisado: 01-14-24
It was a riveting story…way too long and detailed in some parts; at least for my preferences…but well written and very descriptive and the narrator was exceptional. One feels they know young Pino. Definitely recommend.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Entirely Too Long-But Good
Revisado: 08-20-22
The writing-excellent. The story-unbelievably off the chart sick. hard to imagine that one woman could exert so much power and inflict so much control and pain on everyone. My biggest issue with this book is that it was
Just too long. The story could have been told in far fewer hours than this took. It just became a listing of all the horrible things Shelly did over time.
Over and over and over. I get that it went on for decades but it shouldn’t take a decade to tell the story effectively.
I think his next endeavors should include caution about including TOO much detail. Still-I listened to it all.
The narrated was outstandingly probably one of the best I have ever heard. So kudos for that.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Terrific But a Bit Too Long
Revisado: 05-07-22
I loved this story-I especially loved the narrator. In fact-I probably would not have finished reading a printed book…the narrator was THAT good, because the astonishing scientific detail was just WAY over the top at times. The book could have been done just as well-in my opinion-without as MUCH scientific detail and not taken quite so long to get through. That said…it was a great story and a great audible book!

Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my audiobook, Yearbook for websites and shit like that, so...here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like.

Couldn’t Finish It
Revisado: 01-30-22
I really wanted to love this book, but about 1/2 way I decided I just didn’t enjoy it…listening I kept getting bored and falling asleep then restarting from where I remembered and tried again. Finally decided I was fighting a loosing battle. For some, I’m sure this is terrific so don’t judge this by my review. I did not enjoy the continuous profanity…just because I don’t think it enhances a story. If you like or at least don’t mind, then this certainly wouldn’t’ be worth worrying about. If, however, you are like me and don’t like that…this book will be a non-starter.

Too Much Current Day Politics
Revisado: 01-09-22
It was a chilling story…but I felt like it touched way too closely to current day politics while creating a fictitious story. I don’t know…I would have preferred my favorite author steer clear of that type of thing. Not that I disagree with what happened and may yet be happening to our government/country/politics I would just prefer Louise steer clear of it.
As far as the story - it was TOO long. o listens on audible and it may have been the narrator. But I just kept getting bored and hoping to get to the end and I have never felt that way about one of Louise’s books before. Not that the story should have been boring-perhaps if I had read the book in its traditional format I wouldn’t have felt that way.
All in all-I have it a good rating and I did love that they I corporate 3 pines and Gamache into the story.

Loved it
Revisado: 06-26-21
I am giving this 5 stars-not because it’s a literary masterpiece, but because it held my attention-the story is fresh and I couldn’t accurately predict the ending until nearly the very end. A brilliant storyline. At least I thought so. Definitely recommend. My only criticism is the constant back and forth between character perspectives-but not sure how else it could have been done and still preserve the story.
