Historia
Poet, movie star, revolutionary - Tupac Amaru Shakur was the most popular rapper in the world. No one symbolized the violence at the heart of gangsta rap more than Tupac, and he ultimately fell victim to that violence, gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at the age of 25. This raw, no-holds-barred account discloses new information about the unsolved murder of Tupac: the failed investigation, the rap wars, the killing of Biggie Smalls, the Bloods-Crips connection, and the many possible motives leading to the murder that rocked the music world.

Great biography
Revisado: 10-10-18
This really told the true and often misunderstood story of Tupac Shakur's life and death. The author doesn't pull any punches about his crimes but she also tells you about his gifts and his enormous potential which was so quickly snuffed out. This is a very good bio for anyone who wants to know more about this very talented young man. *****

Historia
Leaping from ballet to quiltmaking and from the The Nutcracker to an Annie-B Parson interview, Idiophone is a strikingly original meditation on risk-taking and provocation in art and a unabashedly honest, funny, and intimate consideration of art-making in the context of motherhood, and motherhood in the context of addiction. Amy Fusselman’s compact, beautifully digressive essay feels both surprising and effortless, fueled by broad-ranging curiosity, and, fundamentally, joy.

Historia
Aging widower Russ Lanaker knows he doesn't know his neighbors - but when he finds out one of them was witness to, and career expert on, the strange UFO phenomenon known as the Phoenix Lights, he realizes that's a situation he'd like to change. What follows is an odyssey out of his air-conditioned comfort zone, through the sun-baked Arizona suburbs, and onto the franchise-lined (and not-so-great) American road. In an existential style reminiscent of Don DeLillo, but with the humor and heart of a Coen Brothers film, Alex Higley takes us along as Russ strikes out in search of knowledge.

Thoroughly researched, fascinating read
Revisado: 06-12-18
Matt O'Brien's five-year, hands-on study is of a different kind of Las Vegas underworld -- this one not connected to the Mob. It's impeccably researched with a keen eye for detail but at the same time with an eye for the human side of the story. If you're looking for an inside look at a different kind of Vegas story with a narrative style that's a departure from the usual true-crime fare, this book is for you. You won't be disappointed.

More than just a book about blackjack
Revisado: 05-17-18
I started this audiobook book thinking it would be a good way to learn about the ins and outs of blackjack, but it was much more than that. The author does an excellent job of explaining blackjack playing strategies, ways to beat the house and his adventures in Vegas. But woven into the blackjack talk and Vegas parties is the author's personal journey after losing his father and this is what makes the Blackjack Life an excellent read and the author's story meaningful. If you are looking for a great book on blackjack theory and strategy....get this audiobook. If you are looking for a great story....get this audiobook!

Historia
Marking a significant departure from Noah Cicero's fictional and poetic works, Blood-Soaked Buddha/Hard Earth Pascal is a lucid philosophical treatise. Rather than entertain dogma, Cicero approaches a discussion of Buddhism from the refreshing perspective of the everyman, providing a profound spiritual analysis as well as a sharp critique of capitalism. There are even some pretty good ghost stories.

Historia
True crime, memoir, and ghost story, Mean is the bold and hilarious tale of Myriam Gurba’s coming-of-age as a queer, mixed-race Chicana. Blending radical formal fluidity and caustic humor, Gurba takes on sexual violence, small towns, and race, turning what might be tragic into piercing, revealing comedy. This is a confident, intoxicating, brassy book that takes the cost of sexual assault, racism, misogyny, and homophobia deadly seriously.

An Unferth story lures you in with a voice that seems amiable and lighthearted, but it swerves in sudden and surprising ways that reveal, in terrifying clarity, the rage, despair, and profound mournfulness that have taken up residence at the heart of the American dream. These stories often take place in an exaggerated or heightened reality, a quality that is reminiscent of the work of Donald Barthelme, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders, but in Unferth's unforgettable collection she carves out territory that is entirely her own.
