Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Well written and well read
Revisado: 01-26-23
So many moving and emotional stories. Bryan Stevenson has done a great job. He has had a meaningful life and he was able to understand and articulate the plight of so many people in our country. This could be compulsory reading for students, for policemen, for shopkeepers, teachers , parents, coaches, and just about everybody.

I enjoyed this more than I ever thought I would. The history telling was great and informative. The narrators were wonderfully able to stir my heart over and over with their sincere interpretations of the intricate and touching story. This could be the Broadway show Lafayette!

Historia
In a vivid depiction of Ancient Greece and its legendary heroes, The Mask of Apollo tells the story of Nikeratos, the gifted tragic actor at the centre of political and cultural activity in Athens, 400 B. C. Wherever he goes, Nikeratos carries a golden mask of Apollo, a relic and reminder of an age when the theatre was at the height of its greatness and talent. Only a mascot at first, the mask gradually turns into Nikeratos' conscience as he encounters famous thinkers, actors, and philosophers, including the famous Plato himself.

what happened to Dion?
Revisado: 01-01-23
I enjoyed the book but I read the end twice and I'm still not clear on what was the end of Dion. There was a reference to his death but after the fact, so I don't know how he ended. Also , at the end, the description of the 14-year-old Alexander was a little too exaggerated for my taste.

Historia
Students and journalists, farmers and birdwatchers, ex-wives, adolescent lovers, and dancing girls. All are ordinary people. Or are they? In this splendid collection of short stories, Margaret Atwood maps the human motivation we scarcely know we have in a startlingly original voice, full of a rare intensity and exceptional intelligence. With brilliant flashes of fantasy, humor, and unexpected violence, these stories reveal the complexities of human relationships and bring to life characters that evoke laughter, compassion, terror, and recognition.

Pretty pessimistic
Revisado: 12-08-22
I love Margaret Atwood and Laurel Lefkow did a great job, but these were a little too realistic for my liking. Surely there are some happy women somewhere who are not nuts.

Peer pressure becomes the devil
Revisado: 11-01-22
I think the book is designed to not give too much information so there's more room for thinking about possibilities. You don't really ever understand why they are on the island or what is going to happen after they leave but the reality of the situation is to some extent believable. People do not always behave according to what they learned in childhood, especially under stress. In that sense, it's a very scary book.

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

Touching tributes to many people
Revisado: 10-27-22
I enjoyed this memoir very much, laughing and crying alternatively. It seems to me, however, that it was about a lot more than dinners with Ruth. I think another title might have been more appropriate. I'm glad she bothered to set down the history of the life and death of RBG and her other friends too.

From HER point of view
Revisado: 10-21-22
It was interesting to hear the story of Troy and the fate of Agamemnon and his children from the point of view of three women: Cassandra, Elektra, and Clytemnestra. We did not hear the voices of the men for a change, and for the most part, that was a good change. A few of the details were different from other stories, but I think that just makes the tradition richer, not poorer. The author worked Magic to tell the whole story in the voices of these three women. The three narrators were awesome!

A better Alias for Grace would be "Practical"
Revisado: 10-05-22
Grace had the ability to keep everybody guessing. We don't know what Jeremiah The Peddler-turned-psychiatrist told Grace before the hypnosis session but it could be that Jeremiah is the real hero and the reason Grace finally gets out of prison. I can't help feeling sorry for Simon the doctor who didn't recognize his own feelings enough to act on them and didn't seem to have any resistance to the suggestions of other people either. His wages are Oblivion.

Historia
Herland takes the listener on a fascinating journey into a utopian society comprised entirely of women. A society with no men also means no conflict, resulting in a war-free existence. It is a perfect world, but only if you are female. Three men set out on a journey into uncharted territory to discover for themselves if the legend of an all-female society is a myth or actually a reality. Tracking down the mythical realm of women poses plenty of challenges, but what they ultimately find is both enchanting and frightening.

This will make you question our purposes
Revisado: 09-22-22
I guess we have to wait for an imaginative author like Charlotte Perkins Gilman to make us look objectively at our civilization and think about how we could make things better even though we have messed it up so terribly for so many years. The analysis she makes of Our Own civilization brings out so many important points worth noting that I can easily overlook some of the things that seemed a little too far beyond belief.
