The character of Lady Benton was so consistently foolish, always asking questions with painfully obvious answers. That was annoying, but otherwise a good story that was very well read.

Fascinating characters in a complex, believable mystery beautifully written

The character descriptions were remarkable, and the mystery unfolded in unpredictable, dramatic and yet always believable fashion. The banalities that even well written mysteries frequently suffer from were absent and the humanity of the characters, both principle and secondary, never overlooked.

Perhaps the best book I have this century, and very possibly a good deal of the past century.

Full of wisdom, mystery, love (of people and existence) and it’s glories as well as its humiliations. A masterwork that offers all of the benefits and reasons we read novels, and a dazzling illustration of why our world would be smaller and more barren without works like this.

Far more than a great mystery, remarkable literature in its own right

The character development is excellent. The protagonist is complete and believable, as is the plot. Indeed the plot and the dialogue possess an authenticity that only comes from a writer with full grasp of his subject matter and real world experience. Gripping, but without artifice or hyperbole. A rare treat.

Paul Scott, one of greats of British literature.

What made the experience of listening to Staying On the most enjoyable?

The sensitivity, the humor, the storytelling, and language of a great British novelist.

What other book might you compare Staying On to and why?

The Short Stories of William Trevor, because of the seamless manner with which both authors move between the past. the present and the future, the internal dialogue and the external action. The sensibilities of the characters and thus the authors. Their subtlety and ability to spot the quiet moral dilemmas of ordinary lives.

No, I don't believe so.

Yes.

Paul Scott, author of the Raja Quartet, as well as a number of other wonderful novels, is one of the most overlooked and greatest writers of the 20th Century. In that respect he is like John Fowles, who wrote the Magus, which is perhaps one of the top five novels of the 20th Century and which sadly and inexplicitly has never been made into an audible book.
