While I have enjoyed many of Bova’s works in the past, I found this story a start departure from his previous style. If it weren’t labeled as such, I would assume this was ghost, written by a completely different author.

The characters’ behavior is puerile and not at all what you would expect future society space explores to behave like I found the narrator‘s delivery - like many new or inexperienced narrators – to be a bit over the top, gushing, and exaggerated much of the time

The story is imaginative and enjoyable enough, but Pinchot’s narration is some of my least favorite. It starts to really grate when characters are depicted in tense situations, when narration is oftentimes over the top, or worse - whiny.

I felt the story dragged on with little reward for my time. Character development was sufficient for the lead protagonists, but it’s hard to see how a spacefaring society can slip so easily into an agrarian, hunter-gatherer, Luddite society.

Scott Brick - perhaps the only diamond in this derivative lump - was excellent as always in his narration.

I really tried to like this, based on how many seemed to think it’s a good series. I’d purchased and absorbed book one some time ago - and listened to it again just prior to this. There may well be some science fiction later on the series, but to me the only LOOSELY sci-fi but was the first 20 min of Book One.

The rest of this has read like a tawdry Victorian piece; maybe bridge sci-fi for young girls.

I've rarely found a Clancy book that I didn't like. I'd read the hardback of this when it debuted years ago, but decided to grab the audio version as I re-listened to the series in sequence. I'd gotten so used to hearing Lou Diamond Phillips and Scott Brick narrate the later books (my last time around) that it was a bit of a rude surprise when I heard Hoye's delivery. He doesn't do accents well, has limited range, and - try as I might -I can't get the "I can't believe it's not butter" commercials from the 80s out of my head when I hear him speak.

In my opinion Lou Diamond Phillips and Scott Brick have provided far better narration to the Jack Ryan series audio books.

I listened to this through the Plus program, otherwise I would request a refund. Almost didn’t make it through the book as I felt it went off the rails after the first hour or so.

The main characters lacked any development, with no real depth - so a loss of a character had no real impact. Their behavior was amateurish and not at all representatives of professionals selected for a journey of this singular import to humanity. Even their 1950’s American names were out of place.

The story development, once about mid way through the book, seemed to run out of steam, and the antagonists’ behavior seemed derivative and almost clownish. I feel that so much more could have been accomplished with the book’s length. The narrator - who has done a fantastic job with other stories - was directed to overdue character delivery and reaction, contributing to childish behavior by these ‘professionals’

I can’t decide if the narration lowers the story - or if both are equally as bad. Both the writing and the delivery are over the top, grating and without any real imagination.

I’ve read far better by cherry writers than what Heppner delivers in this story, and shocked that the series appears to continue for a number of books.

I love S. Brick's narration (as always), but found the story itself a letdown. I kept waiting for some real strife you'd expect from an end-of-world story that never came. Sure, there were personal accounts from characters from time to time, but this was too easy to be a compelling dystopian, end-of-civilization story. There were even some divisive characters that I fully expected to circle back into the story and reap revenge, but alas, these two disparate villains were but footnotes. Opportunities missed.

I was pretty hooked after "Breakthrough," but didn't feel that it's sequel did the storyline justice. I thought that with the shocking revelations and events from book one that surely the storyline would continue to focus on these, but the minor inclusion at Leap's conclusion felt like an afterthought to me.

I also feel the narrator lacks the appropriate range for this type of work, with an over-the-top genteel delivery. This is not how professionals and colleague speak to each other. I felt that this contributed more to a Scooby-Doo, serial sort of feel to the storyline.

That said, there are some great elements to Mr Grumley's writing. The connection he draws between disparate intelligences - especially the animal kingdom - is refreshing in this genre. It's frustrating when an author lacks subject matter experience, but I didn't pick up on that in Leap or Breakthrough. His knowledge and use of nautical concepts - while certainly not overly detailed - were accurate in my estimation.

I don't hand out 5 stars flippantly...ever. This was pure entertainment...very few dull moments, and they were easily cancelled out by Jay Snider's narration. Engaging and wildly entertaining.
