Brilliantly written, cogently argued, a realistic view on the status quo with respect to AI. I really hope people in power read this book too.

Great concept and content, too verbose
Revisado: 11-26-24
This is an important book in this time of group think and echo chambers with the cancel culture all too real. It tells some great stories but several chapters have made their point and then carry on about 30% more which made me have to skip forward.

Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment, a secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most in life. So begins Frank Ostaseski's stirring book, The Five Invitations, an exhilarating meditation on the meaning of life and how maintaining an ever-present awareness of death can bring us closer to our truest selves.

Revisado: 09-11-24
Frank wrote and reads this book beautifully. I was moved to tears and laughter throughout. I have gifted and recommended it many times and will continue to do so. For anyone struggling with grief and loss, or just contemplating their own mortality, read or listen to this book. It is up there with Atul Gawande's Being Mortal. What a wonderful gift Frank has put out into the world.

Historia
Are we hardwired to crave more? From food and stuff to information and influence, why can't we ever get enough? Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis and one of the world's leading experts on behaviour change, shows that the problem isn't you. The problem is your scarcity mindset, left over from our ancient ancestors. They had to constantly seek and consume to survive because vital survival tools like food, material goods, information, and power were scarce. But with our modern ability to easily fulfil our ancient desire for more, our hardwired "scarcity brain" is now backfiring.

A good book. Definitely worth the listen. Writing style is a bit awkward - too many "for example"s, when it's obvious an example is coming. Author's performance in reading is a bit wooden. But my husband and I still enjoyed the content and are applying it to our lives.

Historia
Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, Dr. Gad Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. A professor at Concordia University who has witnessed this troubling epidemic firsthand, Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of these concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society.

Please read this book - yes, I mean you too
Revisado: 02-01-24
Funny, well argued, thorough. This book may be a few years old now - pre-Covid - but it is still just as relevant as it was 5 years ago. The culture of social justice has to change and it starts with each one of us - as the author argues in his concluding chapter. The world as we know it depends on it.

Historia
Over the past decades, a healthy appreciation for the culture and heritage of minorities has transformed into an obsession with group identity in all its forms. A new ideology - which Yascha Mounk terms the 'identity synthesis' - seeks to put each citizen's matrix of identities at the heart of social, cultural and political life. This, he argues, is The Identity Trap. Mounk traces the intellectual origin of these ideas. He tells the story of how they were able to win tremendous power over the past decade.

Very thorough and well argued
Revisado: 12-27-23
This is a complex topic that needed to be well argued and thoroughly presented. It is possibly a bit long and repetitive but I cannot see how to shorten it given the need for comprehensive coverage. Extremely well written. Performance is mediocre - a better reader would be preferable.

The Samuel Johnson Prize Shortlist Nominees 2011. Over 10,000 years ago there were fewer than 10 million people on the planet. Today there are more than six billion, 99 per cent of whom are better fed, better sheltered, better entertained and better protected against disease than their Stone Age ancestors. Yet, bizarrely, however much things improve from the way they were before, people still cling to the belief that the future will be nothing but disastrous.

Historia
For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of ageing that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late, prolonging lifespan at the expense of quality of life. Dr Peter Attia, the world's top longevity expert who is featured on Chris Hemsworth's National Geographic documentary Limitless, believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalised, proactive strategy for longevity.

I have listened to Peter Attia (Pattia as my husband calls him) since he launched The Drive. This book is a thorough but accessible assimilation of his ideas and passion. Anyone who is even vaguely interested in living better for longer should listen to this book. Listen rather than read as Peter has succeeded in delivering his content perfectly.

Historia
Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Emotional Agility by Susan David, read by Claire Gordon-Webster. Every day we speak around 16,000 words - but inside our minds we create tens of thousands more. Thoughts such as 'I'm not spending enough time with my children' or 'I'm not good enough to present my work' can seem to be unshakable facts. In reality they're the judgemental opinions of our inner voices.
