Good series utterly ruined by sound effects
Revisado: 06-22-22
I love Nick as a narrator and have never once had cause to complain. until now. I won't even finish the book. the disgusting and grating noises attached to a witch and demon are so offensive and irritating that I had a physical reaction. I could not rip the headphones out of my ears fast enough. the sounds are things obnoxious 10 year Olds would do to annoy someone. story is good. if you liked the previous books, this one is a great advancement of the story. all the previous series finally starting to be woven together and they are very well done excepting the unoriginal names of things such as weaves. but omg what were you thinking???? those noises are unacceptable. at the least you should have used real sound effects of some kind and not made disgusting idiotic noises from your mouth. pathetic. I say again, I love nick. listened to dozens of his narrations. ditching this series since I can't finish this book. let's not let this happen again.

great next volume, wanted a bigger step in story
Revisado: 05-15-21
great next volume but it felt a little short on progress for the story. a few things were addressed but meat of the story was self contained. just a vacation. not so big on knocking items off the in story to do list. good overall no doubt

Historia
Something quite odd is happening in Second World - the planet's foremost MMORPG. Something that's causing alliances to be broken, and friendships, forgotten. A worthless low-level mine becomes the stage of vicious battles, its burned ruins suddenly contested by the game's toughest clans. Every border is controlled, and every road in the province blocked off. The weak players and NPCs alike are subjected to non-stop violent raids courtesy of Eastern invaders. And the strong are scouring the virtual world for the culprit - the weirdest noob the game has ever seen.

worst litrpg experience to date.
Revisado: 08-02-18
i can not decide what was the most painful aspect. was it the narrator's monotone droning or the fact that virtually the only difference between character voices is cadence and differentiation is nigh impossible in most conversations. but no the worst part was how apt the name of the book is. the first 4 hours are the worst most in painful depth explanations of the utter basics of any rpg/game. I don't need 4 hrs of explaining what buffs are nor what durability could mean or how stats work. I haven't finished and am already reviewing. I never skip anything but I've passed by whole chapters due to the monotonous explanations. there is also a section on pooping in a VR world that is so dull boring and uninteresting that even a mob of 12yr old boys wouldn't bother cracking a grin at.

it's more like an outline than a book
Revisado: 01-20-18
the whole series was just a little underwhelming. I wanted to like it, the first book hooked me but after that nothing ever seem to live up to its promise. There was a great deal of action but nowhere near the necessary World building or detail that would have made this a proper Tale. I love Simon Vance he's always exceptional as a narrator but I just couldn't put my stamp of approval on this series. It's not bad and it definitely got me through a couple of long nights of work but I wouldn't necessarily recommend anyone to spend their credits on it. Too many things needed fleshing out, too many things needed more detail, too many characters were two dimensional or lacking and relatable motivation. so much occurred that was never explained or gone into to the point where it added to the story. Like my headline says it felt like most of the details were bullets in an outline rather than details containing necessary substance for the world in which it was set

Excellent first step into a refreshing unknown
Revisado: 03-04-15
It's a great first book in a trilogy?series? And though the beginning set is reminiscent of myriad other books, the progression of twists and turns is utterly unique. With a quickly developing magic system, detailed fights and techniques, it claims enough gritty detail to be dark and vivid at times and also light hearted with humor and satisfying comeuppance for those with it in store. Satisfying and engaging, cannot wait for book 3. On book 2 now.

Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

My first recommendation, always & to anyone
Revisado: 06-02-13
Where does The Wise Man's Fear rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Everything. Excellent magic sys. Awesome characters and development, wonderful story, wonderful narration
What did you like best about this story?
Eh, that was topped off years ago
Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, coming of age stories are usually loaded with banal insights but rothfuss keeps it clean and refreshing. The simple truths are best.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Lord and lady, not a dang thang
Any additional comments?
I have read many many books. Many times many;). I love a good series; LOVE a series and in general I have few restrictions for what I will read regarding fantasy. Drizzt, rand, cauthon, baggins, severian, shaftoe & waterhouse(tho Stephenson is not fantasy, he rocks, baroque cycle is amazing, masterpiece). The point is I have read much and will read mostly anything worthwhile. Of everything I have read, kvothe( main char) immediately ranked top dog. The characters are beautiful and immensely worth knowing. The magic system is tight and logical; fantastic and mundane in one. The story winds and weaves and keeps you guessing. The minor dual timeline(so far) only adds layers to an already beautiful onion of a story. The narrating is spot on. Perfect for the main character and the story. Fell in love with both writing and reading. My only complaint is that for now, my all time favorite story is not finished. I simply cannot say enough. Tho totally different genre, I never thought that Enders game would lose its top seat or the jack white Arthurian series or baroque cycle(historical fiction at its best). This is not only my favorite fantasy series, it is top book, top story, and top listen. Perhaps I was wrong and now I have indeed said enough.
