Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

I’ve heard books like this before, but this one stood out as being much more realistic and less goofy. I liked the slower pacing, but would have liked more of a backstory to some of the side characters that served mostly for providing information to the main character.

Story and voice acting were stellar, although a bit annoying at times.

I appreciated the creative and original storyline. Unfortunately, the main characters’ ineptitude and constant whining did bother me several times throughout the story. Overall, I enjoyed it. I might get the sequels later on as I’m not eager to continue the story just yet.

A good story, but not terribly interesting

Overall, I felt the story wasn’t as interesting as I would have liked. The main character wasn’t as relatable as he could have been, and the side characters seem to be missing depth. The book was technically proficient and well told, but didn’t engage me on a personal level.

I’ve only listened to a handful of these audible originals, but this seems to be the most intriguing as it combines my favorite genre of science fiction with an immersive sound experience. I hope they release a sequel soon.
