You can’t have a good tale of monster hunting without monsters. And sometimes the monsters don’t need to be hunted. Sometimes it’s fun sitting back at minimum safe distance and watching the mayhem.

As ever, this edition would get more of my money if getting a hard copy were easier. If all my e-books would disappear, I would buy this edition again.

Historia
After the killing of a prominent mob lawyer, NYPD homicide detectives Jacob Jackson and Caitlin Grimes start receive chilling, written “rules” for how to commit the perfect murder. "Rule number one for the perfect murder: Evidence is your enemy. Leave none behind." Jackson (Reid Scott) and Grimes (Cobie Smulders) race to find the killer, setting them on a collision course with the city’s crime underbelly, and a perpetrator who seems happy to toy with them. “Rule number two. No crimes of passion. The perfect murder is always business, never pleasure.”

Cheated: But it was free.
Revisado: 01-14-25
Chapter after chapter the tension builds. The team edges closer to the cliff. Murders and bodies stack up and our heroes are not giving up. Of course not. The ending is a cheat.
The team are fantastic voice actors. Reid Scott is a bit over the top at times, but it is not too distracting. Cobie Smulders is a consummate professional and delivers every time. If this was a book I would have returned it. I listened to it three times to see if I missed something - if there was a clue as to how it ended. There wasn't a clue. I was disappointed. But it was free.

Save Your Audible Credit
Revisado: 03-28-24
SPOILERS! SPOILERS!
Mickey 7 has a good premise: What if it was possible to perfectly clone a person and back up the personality so the clone had a perfect memory? Now, what if the person who is cloned is only used for dangerous missions and is considered expendable? His only lot in life is to be expendable. What a gold mine of storylines and none of them are fully explored. It's not funny, it's not thought-provoking, it's not a tear-jerker. It teases a little religious bigotry, but then it's as if the writer is afraid to go deep into the subject matter. I listened to the end because I wanted to know about the aliens, and that was weak tea at best. John and Katherine were excellent narrators, they deserved 5 stars. If you skip this one you saved yourself an Audible credit.

Historia
It is the autumn of 1910, and for 15 long years, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson have battled R’lluhloig, the Hidden Mind that was once Professor James Moriarty. Europe is creeping inexorably towards war, and a more cosmic conflict is nearing its zenith, as in a single night all the most eminent members of the Diogenes Club die horribly, seemingly by their own hands. Holmes suspects it is the handiwork of a German spy working for R’lluhloig, but his search for vengeance costs an old friend his life.

Historia
Sci-fi's favorite antisocial AI is back on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah's SecUnit is. And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good. Martha Wells' Rogue Protocol is the third in the Murderbot Diaries series, starring a humanlike android who keeps getting sucked back into adventure after adventure, though it just wants to be left alone, away from humanity and small talk.

Historia
Felicia “Fe Fe” Stevens is living with her vigilantly loving mother and older teenaged brother, whom she adores, in building 4950 of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes. It’s the summer of 1999, and her high-rise is next in line to be torn down by the Chicago Housing Authority. She, with the devout Precious Brown and Stacia Buchanan, daughter of a Gangster Disciple Queen-Pin, form a tentative trio and, for a brief moment, carve out for themselves a simple life of Double Dutch and innocence.

Surviving and then thriving.
Revisado: 07-18-23
I couldn’t read this story, it was too difficult; I couldn’t get the voices in my head, hear the nuisances between the girls and adults. Read a chapter and put it away - how do they sound, I couldn’t find the rhythm, the cadence of their speech. I gave the book to a friend and they loved it. Months go by and I see it’s on Audible. I try it. Miss Small brought Miss Wolfe’s words to life. Thank you for allowing me a small glimpse of a world I could never comprehend.

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

THE RIGHT NOVEL AT THE RIGHT TIME
Revisado: 08-04-22
We are slowly recuperating from the worst years I, as a 60+-year-old man, can remember. This is after 22 years of active duty service in the US Army. I joined in 1987, you do the math and yes, I went to all the worst places. This book takes its humor seriously. It's light-hearted, but not in a Seinfeld way, there is a weight to the comedy, All good comedy has stakes, a price that should be paid to make the humor or release of tension worth the chuckle or laugh. Mr. Scalzi makes it clear through the interactions of the many characters that their digs and jabs at each other are a release so that they do not become bogged down with the weight of their responsibilities.
It's a novel that demands you suspend your rational mind and enjoy the improbable ride. I did that and listened to it in just three days, I do have other things that not just demand my complete attention, but grab me by the throat and scream, "I WILL NOT FIX MYSELF."
Enjoy the Audible,
