Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

Historia
One night in New York City’s Chinatown, a woman is at a work reunion dinner with former colleagues when she excuses herself to buy a pack of cigarettes. On her way back, she runs into a former boyfriend. And then another. And...another. Nothing is quite what it seems as the city becomes awash with ghosts of heartbreaks past. What would normally pass for coincidence becomes something far stranger.

The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used as an undercover cop. Another great Tana French story
Revisado: 02-23-23
I love everything of hers, some more than others. I've read a bunch and listened to others, they are all so much fun. This wasn't one of my favorites, those would be The Witch Elm and the Secret Place, but there isn't anything she's written that isn't a great read or listen. Can't wait for whatever she is working on next.

Historia
Winner of such prestigious honors as the Booker Prize and Whitbread Award, Ian McEwan is justifiably regarded as a modern master. Set in 1972, Sweet Tooth follows Cambridge student Serena Frome, whose intelligence and beauty land her a job with England's intelligence agency, MI5. In an attempt to monitor writers' politics, MI5 tasks Serena with infiltrating the literary circle of author Tom Healy. But soon matters of trust and identity subvert the operation.

McEwan's books can start out slow, but they're always a great read. This is the first one I've listened to, engaging and well written.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Just the type of book I love for when I am walking, likable characters, interesting story, great performance, and well written. I'm not looking for something deep and disturbing and this isn't, but it is thought provoking for those of us who are women who were alive in the 60s. A fun book!

I've now read or listened to everything she's written. The Wych Elm was my favorite, but this one ranks very high. Her books make great reading, but of three I've listened to, the narrators have been wonderful and these are great books to accompany you on a long drive or while you're exercising. Amazingly engrossing and plotted beautifully.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A great listen, clever story, actually made me think as I was reading. Easy to guess the ending but that didn't detract from the story. Carey Mulligan is a fabulous narrator, as you would expect. The book was sad in parts but not unbearably so.

In Rome, 80 B.C., on a warm spring morning, Gordianus the Finder receives a summons to the house of a then-unknown young advocate and orator, Cicero. Ambitious and brilliant, the 26-year-old Cicero is about to argue his first important case. Awful narration
Revisado: 07-04-21
I got this book because of a recommendation from someone who read it. Wish I had read reviews first. The story was meh, but it may have been better if the narrator wasn't so god=awful. He sounds like he's shouting through the entire reading, voices of the various characters are very amateurish, mispronunciations, etc. I finished it because I was on a road trip and didn't have anything else in my library, but don't waste your time.

A producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats, security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over her face.

Not a lot of there there
Revisado: 07-01-21
It was an ok story, but like other reviewers, I thought it would be more of a thriller, mystery. Not a lot of intrigue/suspense. It's really a sisters story, I kept waiting for something more to happen and when the big scene came, all I could think of was "is that it?"

So engrossing and the narrator is amazing!!
Revisado: 06-12-21
I loved the Martian novel so thought I'd try this one. I read the Martian but listened to this on a cross country drive. It's a first person narrative like the Martian and the narrator/actor was absolutely amazing, can't say enough about him, he brought this extremely clever story to life. Absolutely engrossing, it has it all, hard science, pending world destruction, an unlikely hero thrust into greatness, serendipitous discovery of an alien race, interesting and sympathetic characters, a very unexpected buddy relationship, unexpected plot twists, extremely clever premise. I was sorry when it ended, I wanted more! I highly recommend it.
