Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Solzhenitsyn tells how a country can forget morality through fear and a lust for power. This is a lesson for those who say it can never happen in America.

Historia
Eugene Debs Hartke describes an odyssey from college professor to prison inmate to prison warden back again to prisoner in another of Vonnegut's bitter satirical explorations of how and where (and why) the American dream begins to die. Employing his characteristic narrative device - a retrospective diary in which the protagonist retraces his life at its end, a desperate and disconnected series of events here in Hocus Pocus show Vonnegut with his mask off and his rhetorical devices unshielded.

What a funny story! I love the way Kurt looped back around with almost every “fact” he disclosed. He touched on so many issues and moral questions in such a matter of fact way, and yet they were humorous. A great read!

Historia
No city was more of a help to Abraham Lincoln and the Union war effort - or more of a hindrance. No city raised more men, money, and matériel for the war, and no city raised more hell against it. It was a city of patriots, war heroes, and abolitionists but simultaneously a city of antiwar protest, draft resistance, and sedition. Without his New York supporters, it's highly unlikely Lincoln would have made it to the White House.

Interesting, But...
Revisado: 07-31-17
The story continues telling a number of myths that have proven to be false. For example, Dan Sickles didn't leave the battlefield smoking a cigar while on a stretcher. Beyond that, the last chapters veered sharply from the Civil War.
And, the narrator's mispronouncing Meagher as mere was distracting. One would hope that more substantial research by both the author and narrator would have occurred.

Historia
Short, plain, balding, neither soldier nor orator, low on charisma and high on intelligence, Madison cared more about achieving results than taking the credit. To reach his lifelong goal of a self-governing constitutional republic, he blended his talents with those of key partners. It was Madison who led the drive for the Constitutional Convention and pressed for an effective new government as his patron George Washington lent the effort legitimacy.

Unique Biography
Revisado: 06-06-17
David O. Stewart's design was wonderfully conceived and brilliantly executed. The partnership prose about Hamilton, Washington, Jefferson, Monroe and his beloved Dolly lends itself to better understand the man, his times and his challenges. That context and his aims are important to clarifying the why, but also the why not.
More importantly, Madison's complexity, his focus and his patience despite even the most bitter setbacks, all lend the reader an in depth and fair glimpse of this founding father.
I especially liked to read of his struggle with slavery from personal, sectional and Constitutional perspectives. James was unsuccessful in removing that evil and presciently foresaw secession, a Southern Confederacy and war.

Historia
Alongside Robert E. Lee, no one epitomized the chivalry and heroism celebrated by the Lost Cause more than J. E. B. Stuart, the most famous cavalry officer of the Civil War. Stuart was equal parts great and grandiose while leading the cavalry for the Confederacy in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Stuart was a throwback to the past, but he was also brilliant in conducting reconnaissance, and he proved capable of leading both cavalry and infantry at battles like Chancellorsville.
