The Marriage Lie Audiolibro Por Kimberly Belle arte de portada

Poor writing, okay story, stereotypes galore

Revisado: 12-28-17

The writing is cheesy and full of cringe-worthy cliches, but the plot will keep you interested enough to finish the book. Too bad the ending is so unsatisfying and nonsensical.

The author’s rampant use of stereotypes is off-putting...and at times even concerning (I won’t say more to avoid spoilers). She draws on race, gender, gay, and class stereotypes to advance the story or add “humor.” At first, I wondered if the main character’s observations were intentionally designed to frame her as a prejudiced person, but the author’s choices seemed to indicate that these observations were perhaps more reflective of the author’s own negative views on people who are different from her.

The narrator’s performance for the female lead is believable. Her delivery of male characters, however, is unintentionally funny — most of the male characters soundn like Keanu in Bill a Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Predictable, insta-love, & flat female character

Story: Fans of Archer's Voice and Grayson's Vow may be disappointed with this one. The story is predictable, dull, and corny. There's the insta-love component and the whole book just felt forced. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy cheesy/fluffy stories (that's why I picked this up!), but the dialogue was just cringe-worthy. I didn't find myself rooting for the couple or looking forward to a HEA. Also, there was lots of "telling" and not much "showing." I just wanted to get this book over and done with.

Characters: The hero's character is compelling and well-developed, but the heroine is one-dimensional and rather devoid of personality. I appreciate characters who are closed off because of their complicated pasts, but there wasn't much to Chrystal/Eloise. Her inner dialogue didn't reveal much about who she was. I also kept asking myself how there was love when the characters hadn't had any meaningful exchanges.

Narration: Charlotte North did an excellent job with both female and male voices. I think Matthew Holland wasn't the right choice for this specific story...or genre. His voice for Gabriel was okay, but the rest of his characters sounded like caricatures.

For those of you who love Karin Slaughter, you will not be disappointed. I recommend picking up the actual book instead.

Phil Gigante's narration was at times laughable. The women all have the same voice -- the whiny high pitched one that is often jokingly used to imitate women. Also, anybody who is described as "Asian" or "Hispanic" (or who has a non-Caucasian name) is automatically given a thick stereotypical accent.

The Third Victim Audiolibro Por Lisa Gardner arte de portada

It's true -- the narration is absolutely terrible

I saw that the narration came up as a negative in the other reviews and I wondered...how bad could it be? Oh, I was actually stunned at how terrible it was. The narrator reads the book like an it's an episode of Scooby Doo. And the long pauses between almost each sentences drove me crazy. At first, I kept checking my phone to make sure I hadn't paused the book by accident. How on earth did this audiobook get published?

I am a HUGE Lisa Gardner fan and have been working my way through her books, and I really wanted to experience how Rainie and Quincy first met. I stayed for the story but it was painful. I'm so glad this narrator doesn't read any of her other books.

The dialogue, the plot, the cliches...

I'm kind of a sucker for new adult and romance novels but this was painful. One-dimensional characters that seemed to come from the imagination of someone in middle school...and zero chemistry between the lead characters. I found myself wondering if the narrators were cringing as they read the book.

The Silent Wife Audiolibro Por A. S. A. Harrison arte de portada

Engaging story / bad narration

Would you try another book from A. S. A. Harrison and/or Karen White and Donald Corren ?

I think Donald did a decent job narrating, but I was really surprised at Karen White's terrible narration. I've listened to a couple of other books narrated by her and she did not use the robotic voice she uses in this book. She uses a monotone out of breath voice and she pauses after almost every word. It's pretty unbearable, but the story kept me engaged enough to try and ignore the narration.

Any additional comments?

I feel bad for authors who end up with bad narrators. A bad narrator can really ruin an audiobook, no matter how good the book.

Compelling and additive read with interesting and complex characters.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the others reviewers about the narrators. Caitlin Thornburn did a good job (mispronounced words and all), but the male narrators almost ruined the book with their distracting and cringeworthy performances. One used an odd accent and sounded "robotic," while the other was unintentionally comical and rather cheesy. The book was good enough to put up with the narration.

Any additional comments?

I agree with the other reviewers about the story...so cute, romantic, and original. The narrator did a great job, but the recording was off.The sound would alternate between professionally to a speakerphone-like quality within the same sentence.

No One Knows Audiolibro Por J. T. Ellison arte de portada

Was the ending written by someone else?

What would have made No One Knows better?

Comparing this book to Gone Girl or Girl on a Train does a great disservice to those books. The "twist" at the end pays zero attention to anything you read up until that point. In fact, it almost feels as if the author could't finish the last couple of chapters so some random person wrote an ending without bothering to read chapters 1-69. What makes a twist enjoyable is being able to think back to the story line and seeing how the plot came together...as opposed to feeling like the entire book was essentially irrelevant to the ending.

Has No One Knows turned you off from other books in this genre?
