Historia
Nate Overbay, a former soldier suffering from PTSD and ALS, goes to an 11th-floor bank and climbs out the bathroom window onto the ledge, ready to end it all. But as he’s steeling himself to jump, a crew of gunmen bursts into the bank and begins viciously shooting employees and customers. With nothing to lose, Nate climbs back inside, confronts the robbers, and with his military training, starts taking them out, one by one. The last man standing leaves Nate with a cryptic warning: “He will make you pay in ways you can’t imagine.” Soon enough, Nate learns what this means.

Lost a star because it was depressing
Revisado: 03-27-25
This was a very good story that kept taking me down because it was so damn depressing. Not sure how you fix that, or if really needs to be fixed. But there were times in the first three hours where I felt like slitting my wrists (pardon my metaphoric hyperbole). Purchased this book because I like Hurwitz's Orphan X series. This was different and didn't really measure up. But, on balance, it was a good listen. Sorry for the ambivalence but that's how the book struck me.

Historia
Lucas Davenport had crossed paths with her before. A rich psychopath, Taryn Grant had run successfully for the US Senate, where Lucas had predicted she'd fit right in. He was also convinced that she'd been responsible for three murders, though he'd never been able to prove it. Once a psychopath had gotten that kind of rush, though, he or she often needed another fix, so he figured he might be seeing her again. He was right.

As good as the earlier ones in the series
Revisado: 03-02-25
There's a tendency for authors to phone it in when writing later editions in a character series. That is not the case with Twisted Prey. Of course the excellent narration by Richard Ferrone helps. This is a good story with several well-developed characters. Those who like Lucas Davenport will like this one. I did.

Sometimes good, sometimes boring
Revisado: 02-02-25
The flow of this book was inconsistent. At times I really enjoyed the narrative. At other times, I wondered why I wasting my time listening. I also I found the story to be somewhat convoluted and hard to follow. I likely will not be tempted to listen to any future installments. Bought the book on sale and got my money's worth.

Historia
“Here’s Johnny!” Probably everyone in America knows the phrase, whether they watched every episode of The Tonight Show or none because they had to go to bed early on school nights. From 1962 to 1992, Johnny Carson and his Tonight Show dominated the American consciousness. Henry Bushkin was Carson’s best friend and lawyer during that period, and his book is a tautly rendered and remarkably nuanced portrait of Carson, revealing not only how he truly was, but why.

More Carson, less Bushkin
Revisado: 01-09-25
The best thing about this book are the things we learned about Johnny that we never knew before. Bushkin seemed to drop compliments and criticisms in equal and fair amounts. I would have liked to learn more about Johnny and less about Bushkin. I was also hoping for a little more insight into what Johnny did after he permanently left the Tonight Show. Glad I got the book but was hoping for a little more.

Historia
Jack Reacher wakes up alone, in the dark, handcuffed to a makeshift bed. His right arm has suffered some major damage. His few possessions are gone. He has no memory of getting there. The last thing Reacher can recall is the car he hitched a ride in getting run off the road. The driver was killed. His captors assume Reacher was the driver’s accomplice and patch up his wounds as they plan to make him talk. A plan that will backfire spectacularly . . .

Andrew needs to stop helping Lee
Revisado: 12-25-24
The Reacher series continues to disappoint. I was spoiled by most of the first 20 or so offerings by Lee Child. Other than perhaps Lee losing his edge or running out of ideas, the only thing that has changed is his brother's co-authorship. I would suggest Lee take a shot at writing his next Reacher book without help from Andrew and see where the chips fall. I think he and the rest of us might be pleasantly surprised. I was heartened by the return of frequent "Reacher said nothing" lines in this book. However the irony there was that when he said nothing it was one of the few times in the book when we had little trouble figuring out who Scott Brick was voicing. Scott's million-dollar voice doesn't change much among characters. He needs to work on that. Next fall I look forward to seeing the next book in the Reacher series penned exclusively by Lee Child. Please.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Prefer more Bosch and less Ballard
Revisado: 12-10-24
It's obvious that Connelly makes this series more about Ballard than he does Bosch. They are both good characters but I feel the author simply uses the Bosch name to bring in his fictional character's fans. That was the case with me. Besides that, I thought this offering was well written and Ballard/Bosch fans, both individually and those who like the team, will be pleased.

Enjoyed listening to this title and it was about the right length. You will have to suspend disbelief to buy what happens in this novel but that's not unusual with fiction. Worth a credit but don't expect to be dazzled.

Delaney determined to catch him. Or the killer.

Abrupt conclusion
Revisado: 10-24-24
This author spent a lot of time with descriptive narrative and a compelling story. Then, abruptly, the story ended. And just as abruptly, it lost a star in my rating. A really well written book, until the very end that is.

Historia
At the local state university, two feuding departments have faced off on the battleground of science and medicine. Each carries their views to extremes that may seem absurd, but highly educated people of sound mind and good intentions can reasonably disagree, right? Then a renowned and confrontational scholar winds up dead, and Virgil Flowers is brought in to investigate...and as he probes the recent ideological unrest, he soon comes to realize he's dealing with people who, on this one particular issue, are functionally crazy.

Sandford phoned this one in
Revisado: 10-02-24
Listening to this book was a shade better than not listening to anything on one of my many long walks. I liked Flowers much better in the earlier books in the series and the character seems to be getting a bit stale. I probably would not have continued with books in this series if this were the first one I listened to. Don't understand the high ratings but whatever floats your boat. Get this one if offered on a BOGO sale. Not worth a full credit.

Nothing ever happened there - until the mayor of sorts (campaign slogan: "I'll Do What I Can") and a buddy come up with a scheme to put Pinion on the map. They'd heard of a place where a floating image of the Virgin Mary had turned the whole town into a shrine, attracting thousands of pilgrims. And all those pilgrims needed food, shelter, all kinds of crazy things, right? They'd all get rich! What could go wrong? Standard Flowers Fare
Revisado: 09-10-24
There was nothing exceptional about the book although there were enough reasonable twists, turns and misdirections to keep the listener involved throughout. I was a little disappointed in there not being any closure for the three persons involved in the apparition scam. But they were likable characters so I suppose author John Sandford allowed them to not suffer any repercussions. Flowers fans should get through this one without any major complaints.
