I enjoyed these Magical Midlife/Leveling Up stories very much, enough that I just started Book 6 and have not taken a beat between books. Fun. Terrific distractions. I have favorite characters (Edgar! Mr. Tom/Earl and Niamh are a comedy trio, Ulrich). Especially with Books 1 and 2, I laughed out loud a few times.

By Book 3, I noticed a strange speech pattern had crept in when the narrator became Jess/Jacinta. Distinct but hard to describe - when she pronounces certain sounds (tr, str, th after words ending in d) - like a stiff jaw or something. Picky, I know, but it wasn't there before and is completely distracting.

Then, I noticed Austin, Sébastien, the Basygone (?), Kingsley all sound like Jack Nicholson. 🤔 Made it really hard to distinguish among characters.

I continue on. Enjoying every minute. And I recommend the series as great beach reading/listening.

Really Dislike the Cat

The series is good, predictable entertainment - the "summer lounging in a chaise on the beach" kind - and a great distraction from regular, everyday life.

The books are mostly fun. They're predictable. There's magic. (Not enough. More please.) Revolving antagonists. Romance. Aunt Lavender.

I just finished Book 9, though, and sad but true, I am distracted by Seleen. In fact, I really dislike her. The cat. The caustic, rude, snarky, sarcastic, inappropriate, selfish, demanding, know-it-all, imperious, condescending - all the "caustic" words - cat. She's a bully, She never stops. It's too much.

Interesting Future-Casting, Distracting Narration

I liked the idea of this story. I was annoyed by the narration of the primary character who sounds like she's whining, crying, getting ready to whine, getting ready to cry, just whined or just cried.

I made it through to the end but was glad when it did.

Having so much fun with this series. Binged Books 1-10 in a few weeks. Finished Book 10 much too soon. Now, I have to wait almost 3 weeks for Book 11 to be released! Ninja stuff, magic stuff, gods, other gods, witty repartee, death, resurrection, elves, world hopping. I do wonder why everyone sounds like they're from Australia, New Zealand, Scotland. Kinda funny but odd, That said, the repertoire of accents and remembering who sounds like what is astounding. This has been a great escape from work stresses and a perfect companion on long walks and visits to the park.
Enjoying it very much.

This book left me so filled with emotion that I find it difficult to write a review. Keeping it brief and to the point, I so appreciate Salman Rushdie narrated this and did not leave its interpretation to anyone else. When I wasn't full of sorrow and sympathy or recoiled by the horror of his experience, I was overcome by love for him, his beloved Eliza and every person who had even the slightest part in his recovery OR I was laughing out loud (he has a way with words, you know). Thank you, Salman.

I loved hearing Tariq's story in his own voice. No one else could have done it proper justice. I cried (a lot). I laughed. I could not stop listening - from beginning to end, even while at work. This private view into what made him him is a gift I will always be grateful for.

Fascinating story of an artist who changed and challenged the course of culture and musical history so many times we lose count. Told by the master of funk himself. I've gifted this audio book to my friends and family. I'll be listening to it on repeat. Thank you for EVERYTHING, George Clinton.

The new narrator is "off" enough that it distracts from the story. The accents sometimes sound British upperclassmen, sometimes Irish? and sometimes American from 21st Century Queens, and often drift as though her palate gets overwhelmed by the effort and finally gives up the ghost. Some of the characters' cadences and tempos - especially Georgie and Belinda's - are rushed as though she's working hard to get through the story as quickly as possible.

I have to wonder if she'd read the previous books before narrating this one.

I started reading this series as a fun diversion from my stressful day-to-day. Now I'm all stressed out.

Sad. Lovely. Beautifully conceived. I've been addicted to Fredrik Backman since My Grandmother Tole Me to Tell You She's Sorry. I don't know what took me so long to discover him. I'm so glad I did. This novella, like all his books, is gratifying, familiar, a good story well-told.

The late author Malidoma Patrice Some said children and elders are close because children have recently come from where the elders will soon go. They bring messages. This beautiful story is that. If you have seen or lived that relationship, it will be familiar to you. Frederik Backman has a gift. He is a storyteller. This opened my heart and, then, broke it and, then, fixed it and, then,, opened it again and, then, broke it again. To this, I only say "Amen."
