Historia
Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due.

Very Clever
Revisado: 09-08-24
Loved Simon and Vicki. Narration was spot on. Jane the detective had an annoying voice and the character seemed like a numb nut. I wasn't putting much faith in the book because of Jane, and even found what I thought were author errors or holes, only to find out they were part of the plan. I mean, I thought I had it figured out very early on but the plotlines are so well weaved together, at the end every single loose end you thought of—and even the ones you didn't—were expertly tied up. Probably more like 4.9 stars than 5 because the Jane narrator's voice grated on my nerves. I'm sure the character in the book is more likable if I didn't have to hear the narrator's voice. Otherwise, excellent listen!

Like having s#x and never climaxing
Revisado: 08-07-24
I was hooked during the prologue/first chapter with the zip tie comment, but then spent at least eight hours waiting to get to that moment with no drama along the way, very little drama at the moment, and an odd ending. And all this from a narrator who, while flawed, I didn't love. (And I do love a flawed protagonist.) Great writing, but in the end, it felt like having s#x with someone barely tolerable and never climaxing.

I wasn't expecting much from this book. I was interested in the beginning but not blown away by the story or the main character, Evie. And then I saw what a badass Evie was and was all in. Narration on point. Storyline slowly drags you in. I totally recommend this!

This book was fascinating. Not "disgusting" at all, just science. Fascinating to hear how medical examiners and rule out causes and reach conclusions. The back-and-forth storytelling between characters and moments in time wasn't confusing, as it can be in some books. And made the climax much more thrilling. Those who didn't like the ending are wimps. The ending was perfect for this book. What a ride!

Well, that was fun
Revisado: 02-11-24
I listened to All's Well by Mona Award and read by Sophie Amoss. Sophie is the perfect person to read Mona's work, IMO. That book (All's Well) left me a bit confused but now I see that's the author's style. Just a bunch of fantasy thrown into real-life situation. Sort of. So once I accepted that, I could buckle in and enjoy the ride. A bit long and rambling at times but I didn't mind since I churn through these books pretty quickly and it's nice to have one hang around for a bit.

Historia
Lucas Forester didn’t hate his wife. Michelle was brilliant, sophisticated and beautiful. Sure, she had extravagant spending habits, that petty attitude, a total disregard for anyone below her status. But she also had a lot to offer. Most notably: wealth that only the one percent could comprehend. For years, Lucas has been honing a flawless plan to inherit Michelle’s fortune. Unfortunately, it involves taking a hit out on her. Every track is covered, no trace left behind, and now Lucas plays the grieving husband so well he deserves an award.

Well that ended abruptly
Revisado: 02-11-24
Ended abruptly and unresolved. But entertaining enough for me to finish. I pictured the narrator being Matthew Macfadyen, the British actor who played Tom Wambsgans on Succession, so that made it more enjoyable for me, too.

Wild... Am I right?
Revisado: 01-05-24
Well written. This is the kind of voice I love to hear from an author. Very real. The narrator was spot-on in delivering this. I loved the Shakespeare theme (wish I knew something about All's Well before listening, but it didn't dampen the ride). Never knew where this was headed or what would become of it in the end. Still not sure what was real and what was...IDK. Misinterpreted? Or, what? IDK. I'm going to listen to the ending again to see if I can make sense of it. But the writing was just a joy... to me.

That was a fun ride
Revisado: 12-28-23
I love crazy protagonists and this one was delightful. I enjoyed the (rather short) ride (If I'd realized it was <6 hours long, I'd have saved my credit). And the last chapter was surprising but seemed not as well written. I think the ending recapped everything too quickly and could have been told slower and more gracefully as to further play with the reader. A shame. So, it felt like the story ended abruptly with inadequate resolution. Like an aborted climax.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. Meh
Revisado: 12-28-23
For some reason, this book was promoted heavily for me so eventually I gave in and decided to give it a listen despite mild interest in the summary. I must have a really twisted mind because I just wasn't shocked by the "dark" moments, which were spoon-fed to the reader at such a quantity that none of it really came as a surprise. I love a flawed protagonist but Eleanor was just a little too meek for me to have any sort of emotion for her one way or the other. I did listen to the entire book, though, and didn't regret it. Was mildly surprised at the end about the mother but not enough to blow my mind.
Also, dogs and rhinos cover their feces with their back legs. Cats use their front paws. And traumatized cats are hardly going to sit calmly in a covered box or a stranger's arms.
Still, this novel flows and is written well enough you don't want to throw your phone across the room. So I applaud the author for that. I wish I hadn't used a credit (or, actually, I think I actually paid for this one...) If I were to talk to my pre-listen self I'd say not to use a credit on it but maybe listen if it's offered for free or heavily discounted on sale.

Historia
Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.

Revisado: 12-18-23
I'm not going to lie...the first four hours were torture. I nearly threw my phone across the room after the narrator spent 10 minutes describing the kind of husband she thought she would marry only to follow it up with a 10-minute description of the man she did marry. Just long monologues droning on in the most pretentious of voices. But I did read in the reviews to just hang on ... that review said about three hours. But once you get past the hours the author takes to build the narrator and her husband's characters, the book begins to take a dark and captivating turn. Not sure that build-up should have taken so long, but it did establish some good background despite it being almost unbearable. I'm so grateful I made it through that first quarter of the book because the rest continued to be beautifully written and absolutely incredible story.
I put off listening this for a long time because I thought it would be too difficult to listen to. It wasn't a walk in the park, but it wasn't difficult in the way I thought it would be. The ending, while expected, still threw me for a loop. I want everyone I know to read this so I can talk to someone about it. The kind of book that stays with you a long, long time. One of my best all time books, though I didn't think I'd say that during the first four hours!
Here's my message to my pre-listen self: Stick with it through those first four hours of dronings on. You'll be glad you did.
