Historia
Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics represent, in many ways, the Western classical springboard for the systematic study and implementation of ethics, the optimum behaviour of the individual. (By contrast, Aristotle’s Politics concerns the optimum blueprint for the city-state.) It is in the hands of each individual, he argues in these books on personal ethics, to develop a character which bases a life on virtue, with positive but moderate habits.

Voice
Revisado: 02-03-25
Great voice, great content, strange that our ruling class now seems very not aristocracy. The reasoning of why the law of excluded middle exists in this book. (It’s kinda like induction shows stuff is good for ruling class and isn’t for the subjected)

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Illuminating Terminality
Revisado: 12-22-24
It seems hard to recognize the end. Some understand it, doctors and nurses. Probability still plays a role in indomitable nature, but we know death plays by no rules. Tolkien reported once on LOTR as being about the feelings of injustice a man has toward his own death. Here is a primer.

Historia
This lively and accessible introduction to Plato focuses on the philosophy and argument of his writings, drawing the listener into Plato's way of doing philosophy, and the general themes of his thinking. It looks at Plato as a thinker grappling with philosophical problems in a variety of ways, rather than a philosopher with a fully worked-out system. It includes a brief account of Plato's life and the various interpretations that have been drawn from the sparse remains of information.

Anti-woke reviews are dramatic
Revisado: 12-15-24
I’m not woke, but these anti-woke people are way over dramatic in their review. There was a section critiquing Plato’s ability to generate meaningful feminine progress, but not in the way you expect. She notes that he couldn’t appreciate that work of the domestic kind is just as important as the philosophic, and this note is but a small fragment of the book. Why people take offense to such small aside is beyond me, let’s be honest the philosophy is also beyond me too.
Very insightful and fun to listen to an expert.

External view of avoidance is super helpful. It’s hard too because you’ll get interlocked with others trying to deny the toughness. This book is about trying to engage in it.

Let's face it, we’ve all been guilty of "circling back” to “touch base” with a colleague to get a “30,000-foot view” so you can create a “strategic staircase” to pick the "low-hanging fruit”. Okay, so maybe you haven't packed all of those buzzwords into one sentence, but I'm sure you know someone who has. Since COVID-19 forced many of us to work from home, maybe you've even discovered you're married to a "let's circle back" guy/girl. Buzzwords & BS is a lighthearted look at business buzzwords.

Historia
The Myth of Mirror Neurons, neuroscientist Gregory Hickok reexamines the mirror neuron story and finds that it is built on a tenuous foundation - a pair of codependent assumptions about mirror neuron activity and human understanding. Drawing on a broad range of observations from work on animal behavior, modern neuroimaging, neurological disorders, and more, Hickok argues that the foundational assumptions fall flat in light of the facts.

Historia
For much of his career, Dr. Mark Epstein kept his beliefs as a Buddhist separate from his work as a psychiatrist. But as he became more forthcoming with his patients about his personal spiritual leanings, he was surprised to find how many of them were eager to learn more. The divisions between the psychological, emotional, and the spiritual, he soon realized, were not as distinct as one might think.

Amazed
Revisado: 06-28-24
I have been looking into Buddhism for the past 2 years coming from a Mormon background. I have been influenced by some of the more modern western Buddhist teachers.I heard about this therapist from another book, his quickness was refreshing.
He has a wealth of kindness and a maturity of practice as he explains from his therapy practice. What is special though is the pragmatism he reveals of Buddhism.
This is like if you had a pragmatic dad who enjoyed fixing things, but he also went on benders for Buddhism and came away with great stories to tell about your heroes.

Historia
Nobody wants to fail. But in highly complex organizations, success can happen only when we confront our mistakes, learn from our own version of a black box, and create a climate where it's safe to fail. We all have to endure failure from time to time, whether it's underperforming at a job interview, flunking an exam, or losing a pickup basketball game. But for people working in safety-critical industries, getting it wrong can have deadly consequences.
