Dark and Depressing but Interesting
Revisado: 08-16-24
The plot was predictable and dragged a bit. It was extremely depressing, using negative events as the only plot development. However, the characters were very well developed, and the worldbuilding was unique. Not for me, but if you liked "The Bear and the Nightingale" you will probably like it.

Historia
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

Dark Reimagining of Gothic Romance
Revisado: 04-24-24
This book is just beautifully written. The writing flows well, it has a good mystery, several classic Gothic elements: long white nightrobes, dark crumbling houses, mysterious strangers offering warnings. Trigger warning: there are some references to sexual and emotional abuse. It becomes a part of the plot. Would not recommend for younger teens, as there are some quite heavy passages. Overall, a good listen, but once is enough.

good, not great
Revisado: 07-13-21
An interesting premise, with a predictable outcome, this story gets VERY slow in the middle. The characters reinforce tropes rather than developing. Many questions are never answered. The author has a nice way with words, though, that keeps the story moving, and it really picks up in the last third. A unique premise, worth a read, but not a repeat.

As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.
