Historia
Running saved Alison Désir’s life. At rock bottom and searching for meaning and structure, Désir started marathon training, finding that it vastly improved both her physical and mental health. Yet as she became involved in the community and learned its history, she realized that the sport was largely built with white people in mind. Running While Black draws on Désir’s experience as an athlete, activist, and mental health advocate to explore why the seemingly simple, human act of long distance running for exercise and health has never been truly open to Black people.

Not just for runners

This book is for any/everyone who wants to be a better ally & anti racist. This book is about how white supremacy, racism, classism, ableism, white patriarchy & colonialism shows up in running. Yes, sports are political bc the same methods used to uphold white supremacy & racism in all sectors of society are also the basis for the culture of running. Running is the thing that weaves Désir’s story together and what built her communities but it is also the thing that highlights the unbearable whiteness of running. Every track/running coach at all levels, starting in grade school needs to read this book. Every race director, person in HR, this book is for every body.
