Transformation is Possible

Just like the title suggests, this book is about following Jesus by practicing His way of life. The thesis of the book is that “transformation is possible if we are willing to arrange our lives around the practices, rhythms, and truths that Jesus himself did, which will open our lives to God’s power to change.”

Many people know they need to change. They want to stop sin patterns and follow the Holy Spirit. They might have a good vision of themselves in deep communion with God. But many don’t have a means to get there. They don’t know how to be transformed. They don’t have a path to apprentice in His way. John Mark Comer humbly presents a working theory of change:

To be with Jesus, become like him, and do as he did.

He gets down to the details of our sin patterns and how neuroplasticity and psychology is something to consider learning about. He also breaks down how to change through renewing the mind (teaching), training the body (practices), living in community, and following the Holy Spirit, as well as expecting the process to take time and be patient in suffering. He spends a good chunk of time talking about practically being formed by implementing a Rule of Life, and how anyone can get started.

There’s a part in the book where things really changed and he really emphasized the ministry of Jesus and how he calls us to apprentice under him. John Mark doesn’t shy away from really talking about the person and work of Jesus and how his Holy Spirit can actively transform us into our Master.

What I really love about this book is that it’s deep enough for pastors and theologians to dive in and be challenged AND shallow enough for new believers and seekers to see grace and invitation in.

I’ve read many books on this topic, and this is probably my favorite. It covers not just how to Sabbath well, but covers the rest of the week! I have not read anything on this that is so practical and simplified. An amazing first step into healthy spirituality and emotional health.

You don’t actually realize how much of a slave you are to technology, your phone, or your work until someone raises an alarm and says that something is wrong. But Jeff doesn’t only tell us what’s wrong, but actually gives us practical tools to reverse these bad habits to make new formations in our walk with Jesus. Be ready to be challenged on many areas of your life.

Zach Neese is a good book for worship leaders in churches. I gave it 4 stars because there are some examples of poor biblical exegesis. He offers some great insights into worship, but stretches too many concepts that aren't biblically supported in my opinion.

This book really helped me shift my thinking to be a follower of Jesus more than being a church leader. Being a church leader is great, but Len Sweet really shares his heart about following Jesus using his great artistic styling of words.

This book is a great tool for ministry leaders! I love the way Peter Scazzero narrates. It's very welcoming and makes it sound like a conversation. I highly recommend this book.

This book is tremendous coming from a non-profit entrepreneur like me. Gary doesn't cut corners and shares the honest truth. The big things he points out is gratitude and self-awareness (EQ) amongst other great topics. Get this book now!

After much hardship starting off my career, I've been asking myself why there is such a disconnect between my baby-boomer boss and I. Listening to this book as a millennial helped me understand why I think certain ways and how to bridge the gap through generational reconciliation. I knew I thought differently, but now I know why I think certain ways and also how older generations were raised. Thanks Gabrielle for making this available to us!
